E-mail topic: Pulaski, the Ghost Town

Why isnt there anything to do in Pulaski, How come the pool closes before summer is actually over.. Why is it that every other little town manages to pull in business's but we keep getting ones that close down? Isnt there anyway to get some kind of survey for all Pulaskians to fill out about what they would like to see in our town?

This is a great set of questions. However, if we get everything, we will end up like Columbia. columbia started as a small town atmosphere years ago but got too big too fast. Now, the crime is terrible there. I wouldn't want to live there.

Now, if Pulaski and Giles County governments would pull together to bring things in the keep people in GC from going to Columbia, Lawrenceburg, Fayetteville, Athens and Huntsville then things may be better. There is absolutely NOTHING for teenagers to do but ride the streets at night. Yes, we have MMC theater, but it isn't like a normal theater which is open 7 days a week. We also don't have hardly any good family upscale restaurants either and (like it or not) we have liquor by the drink. I had heard Applebee's was coming but then pulled out. I don't know if any of that is true though. I had also heard that Arby's was coming and then pulled out. I heard it was because industries were closing left and right in the industrial park area. Like I said, I don't know for a FACT that any of this is true.

Let's take a look. What does GC have as far as shopping to bring people here to shop or keep families here to shop? Downtown is ok but parking just isn't there. There's no way to increase parking downtown either. The north end of town looks like the ghetto. How could GC ever attract anything to Pulaski with the way the north end looks? Think about it, Lynnville is almost as close to Columbia as Pulaski so why not go to Columbia to shop and eat; 20 minutes either way. Culleoka is the same way. If you live on the south end of the county, Athens, Rogersville.......why not go there to shop and eat?

There's no jobs in GC hardly so a lot of people must travel to different areas to find work. If it weren't for Wal-Mart this town would be a ghost town. Then again, if you live in Columbia you go to Cool Springs to shop. Is there an answer to keeping people in GC? I certainly don't know but I shop here more than anywhere any else and eat here more than anywhere else.

I think we need somewhere for teenagers to go and still be safe.Somewhere parents would approve of so they would actually let us go.But I also agree that we don't need alot of businesses to come so we end up like Columbia.

Several eating establishments were looking at Pulaski but due to the property being more expensive here then places like Murfreesboro, which has a larger population and average income, the companies went elsewhere

As for liquor by the drink, nice restaurants typically do not go to place unless they can serve liquor by the drink. So, I for one am glad it past.

I personally don't think we have to grow to the size of columbia, but it would be nice to have a place to eat with your family that doesn't cost an arm and leg. I think some of the people in pulaski( big wheels) are afraid to do this because they are afraid it won't line their pockets as well, we the people need to stand up and be heard, after all we pay taxes too, and our kids need places to hang out, so they won't do drugs and alchol. we the parents need to help something like this to come to pulaski. as far as north end looking like the ghetto's, look around there is more stuff, such as business on north end than the south end..there is a nice resturant ball park service stations, some with deli's, we have a clothing store tire places grocery stores, etc people shouldn't judge north end of town, we have nice intelligent people and respectable business' there, devert your energy on pulaski as a whole, and help it to be a better place so people will want to shop and eat and do recreatonaal things here, instead of having to go out of town...

I thought that this topic would have more discussion than it has so far.
As a small(very small) business owner I've experienced the effects of out sourcing our jobs first hand.
Basically, my job(tv repair) has been out sourced to China.
I can't fault anyone for replacing smaller tvs with the imported product that Wal-Mart sells.
Cheap prices sell goods, and that is a fact.
But cheap goods have also cost us jobs.
Just ride around town and count the empty buildings.
This county needs industry.
How many plants have closed down in Giles, and the neighboring counties in the last few years?
Does this not show that we, as a county, and as a country are in dire straits?
The concept of Pulaski being a "retirement" community or of being a "bedroom" community seem a bit iffy at best, now that gas is $3.00 a gallon and likely to go much higher.
In fact, Pulaski and Ardmore have always been "bedroom" communities for Huntsville.
Huntsville, as far back as I can remember, and later, for employees of Saturn and Nissan.
The older workers likely have no choice but to Tough Out the commute, but what are the young people to do?
I have lots of questions.
I'm afraid that I don't have any answers.

Man, what is going on? I sat at the drive thru at KFC today and waited 20 minutes and no one took my order so I left and went to Dairy Queen and waited 15 more minutes. This place sucks!

Yes, Mr. Funny Blue Head your original and provocative views of the community would be well received upon my Former Vice Presidential ears while I enjoy Uncle Herschel’s Favorite® at exit 22. My mistake, I keep reversing the numbers, it should be exit 22.

I am happy to hear that I am not the only person that has issues with the service at Dairy Queen and KFC.

However, with the threat of global warming Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) seems to be running rampant.

Life would have been better if I was President.

I'll tell you why this county is a ghost town. Because we have a few "elect" citizens like Mr. Rackley, and the Cardins to name only two of many, who think they own this county and don't want anyone else here to take part of their profits or their "name". This is the most "stuck up" county I have ever been a part of. It sucks, and deserves what it gets. It's so full of political crap it's sickening. The rich want to get richer, while the county gets poorer.
