Why are so many good teachers leaving Richland High School?

not only at richland, but everywhere we seem to be placing too much emphasis on the central office and athletics and not enough on teaching the basics.

Mr. Barrett, I think that the principle is a kind, fair and understanding person who is being treated unfairly by some, because she knows how to efficiently run a school. Sometimes hard (unpopular) decisions have to be made, and I'm glad we have at least one principle who is not afraid to make them.

Mr. Barrett,
You are absolutely right! I attended a football game last year and as I walked up to the gate, there stood the principal and one other person smoking outside the gate, leaning on the fence. I was shocked, and there was no effort on her part to hide she was smocking, with teachers, parents, students and others all around.

I went to put up a child one day and the principal was standing at the front entrance smoking. She is a very smart person and knows she shouldn’t be smoking at school at all. I just think it sends the wrong message to the students and teachers.

I have heard a lot of other things but I will not comment on those because I didn’t witness them myself.

You are 100% correct on Mrs. Swinford and Mr. Smith! Mr. Smith is well appreciated by the teachers and other employees at Bridgeforth and it’s unfortunate we don’t have someone like him or Mrs. Swinford at Richland High School!

I have had children at BMS and Southside. You are correct when you say that Mr. Smith and Mrs. Swinford are great principals. They do treat all students the same, no matter what your last name is, or how much people "think" is in their parents bank accounts. The ones at GCHS are a different story. It's political and it's bull.

I believe having a last name is very important, how could we tell all the Bubba’s and Billy Bob’s apart if we didn’t have last names.

Seriously, I think a lot of the problems would be solved if they where to consolidate the high schools. That way EVERYONE has the same opportunity.

You can come and use the newly rentivated bathrooms at the schools Especilly at the high school. That is if you don't mind coming out with cigarette smoke all over you, maybe the smell of pot. For a good smoke fix just go to the one across Hastings office. He can't get off his lazy fanny to open his door and smell. He doesn't even know school is going on much less care if the kids are smoking. The school system wants to fix up what kids could care less about and will still ask to go home or use the teachers bathrooms to pee.

I've had two children go through Southside, one who is now at BMS and another who is now at GCHS-(thank goodness)-The best principal in this county is without a doubt hands down- JB Smith-He treats all of the children the same and is very concerned with their well-fair-Carole Swinford needs to go back to Lincoln County where she lives-If you are a teacher at Southside and you are hanging out of her tail, you get all the help and glory you want-But if the teacher chooses to voice their own opinion, they are poop out of luck-She pushes the AR reading crap so far down the kids throats by the time they get to BMS the poor teachers there have a hard time teaching reading much less getting the kids to do AR or read-Debbie Braden was much more suited for Southside!!!!Go back to Lincon County!!!

I agree-Bobby Polly is a good principal-The problem w/ AR is the children who can read at higher levels have to get too many points and the ones who have a harder time reading barely have to get any-wouldnt it make more sense to have the ones who are having trouble reading to read more and have the ones who read well to read less or at their own pace instead of pushing it down their throats and causing them to hate reading-Yes, it does count on their grade at BMS-it is 1/4 of their grade-the AR program is not all it is cracked up to be

We have wonderful teachers in the Giles County system but there are alot of them who are looking for a career change b/c of the pay, and sometimes it is the conditions of how they have to teach-some of them have to be referees and thats not what they signed up for and its not fair to them

Maybe I assumed you to be someone else. I did not attend or have children that attend Richland, but I know a lot of the teachers. Like most of them say, “I thought we had it bad when Mr. Hobbs was here but we would do anything to get him back.
The students have no respect for the current principal and the moral is very low. They just roll their eyes and tune her out when she gets on the PA system and says, “I love all of you and there is nothing you can do about it.”

To Ms. Mc Masters,
Would you please look into this matter for me?
Please inquire of Mr. Tom Davis, History teacher, what is his problem with the female students he has in his class? Since there is only four, maybe that is four too many for him.
He makes the females sit in the back of the class and when he ask a question and the students raise their hand to answer, he will take the male students answers first and engage in conversation with them. Finally, he gets to the female students last, they give their answer and thoughts and he will just blow them off.
Please check the grade he just gave a male student that admitted to the other students he did not know the answers to the questions.
The female students a well aware Mr. Davis is being sexist against them and you being a female, surely you can understand how they feel. Something needs to be done and I will appreciate you correcting the problem.
He can be sexist at home, like he has stated, but not at school!

A parent at the Thursday night school board meeting made a comment that might make for a great blog sight and some feed back from those who are afraid to be known but would feel free to comment.
1. What school are you from?
2. Are you a parent, teacher, principal, support staff, student, or whatever I have left out?
3. Do you think your principal is doing a good job?
4. Would you freely speak of the negative in your school?
5. Would you speak freely of the positive in your school?
6. Would you like to see our present director continue until June, 2010?
7. Would you like to see our present director dismissed in the early spring?
8. Are you happy with your school board repesentative?
9. Do you think our schools are safe?
10. Use this one to express yourself fully. Would you ever consider calling a dependable school board member to share your feelings? Would you have documentation to share?
11. Do you think if you spoke out your child would feel repercussions?

My comment is in relation to Mr. Barret and the morale at RHS and also to the survey type blog about RHS.
Yes, the morale at Richland is at an all time low. Ms. McMasters is there only to sit in her office and collect a paycheck. She rarely takes phone calls, rarely walks the halls to talk with students, and rarely speaks to teachers in a positive manner. She always has a frown on her face, seems to always be sick, and is so power hungry it's sickening. All we ever hear from her is,"Shirtail"-"Shirtail."
As far as teachers are concerned:
If you aren't from Giles Co., you won't be at Richland for long unless there isn't a teacher from here to fill the position. Where have the teachers gone? Somewhere where they are appreciated for their hard work I hope. There are some rich and influential people in this town who decide who stays and who doesn't. As Mr. Barret stated, Coach Miller and Coach Pickett are two examples of two good coaches and teachers who were let go because they weren't from here. Coach Pickett had a great record in baseball, made the field like it is, won District and Region titles, 4 out of 5 yrs. there, and had the respect of the players. I admire him to this day, and that was 3 yrs. ago that he was taken away from me as a great coach. I learned more from him than any teacher I'd ever had. Look at what has become of baseball now. It's like little league down there . Coach Miller was an EXCELLENT math teacher, but that didn't matter. A man from Giles Co, needed a job, and he got it!
As far as would I recommend Mr. Jackson be let go in the spring? Most definitely. He is unapproachable and only cares about the big paycheck he gets every month and the fancy office he wants to spend a couple of million dollars on while he's still here. You should see him get out of his car and put his suit jacket on and then take it off and put it in his back seat before driving off. He would make a great fashion superintendent. He brags about the county scores being up. WEll, was he in the classroom teaching those kids for half the salary he gets now, and under the low morale that the teachers at Richland work under? ha. I think NOT.
Yes, I feel comfortable in contacting the NEW board members. Thank God Mr. Gonzales is gone. If we can get rid of TT, and the administrators at Richland, there will be many more happy teachers, students, and parents at Richland. and isn't that what it's all about anyway. The kids hate their principal. It's so sad. You should hear what they say about her and her past- but that is another topic. Role Model? I think not.
I don't understand how the county has allowed Ms. McMasters to stay at Richland, and an out-of- state Director of Schools to stay in power. Something is sooooo wrong here. Maybe if all the teachers weren't so afraid of repercutions from these two bullies, they would all stay home for a month and things might change--but I doubt it. I don't see a change unless the new school board memebers who I don't think will "suck up" to TT will make some changes. Thanks to all who voted them in. LET'S GO GILES CO. BOARD MEMBERS. Make some changes for the children!!!!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said...

The soccer field is a joke. The school will never make up the money they spent on the lights since most games aren't played at night.
In response to the survey questions.
Yes, I feel the school is safe.
NO, I don't feel the superintendent should be allowed to stay a day longer.
Do I feel that I can speak positive about the schools? Yes, if my name is identified.
NO, if it's not identified.
Yes, I am happy with the newly elected board members and feel free to contact them.
The old board member who Kiss up to Tee-NO.
Would my child feel repercutions if I spoke out? At Richland, they seem to be afraid of parents who speak out, so no, I wouldn't be afraid. They seem to pick on the kids whose parents won't say anything. If you speak out, they are afraid of what you might say about them-"hidden skeltons."
Thanks for the new blog. I'm glad it's back up and running again.

I couldn’t believe Mrs. Debbie Braden’s comments in response to a parent in attendance at the school board meeting, requesting more math and science teachers are needed at RHS! They were printed in this week’s paper.

Her response was, “there just aren’t any teachers out there for these subjects.”
What a crock!!!!!!!! Mr. Miller was one of the best math teachers RHS has had and Mr. Jackson, Ms. McMasters fired him, for not winning ballgames!!!!
I remember one comment on the old blog by a student, “No his is not a good coach, but he is a great math teacher….so let him teach!
Gee, I need to go take a blood pressure pill!!!!!!

The article in the paper states:
Concerned parents of two Richland High School students brought questions about the lack of advanced science and math teachers at the school.

Several board members expressed regret of the situation with Braden addressing the parents.
“All stakeholders wish we had those (teachers) to offer these students,” Braden said. “But the fact is there is no quick fix. Not only is it hard to replace veteran teachers, but there is a shortage of qualified math, science, foreign language and special education teachers across the entire state. Unfortunately, the people to fill these positions just aren’t there.”

If this is the case, why in the world did Ms. McMasters, Mr. Jackson, Mrs. Braden and the past board let one of Richland’s good math teachers leave. Many parents and students begged and pleaded with you to not fire him. WHY…WHY…WHY?

Excuse me, but YOU yourself posted anonymously, didn't you? Do you fear that some narrow-minded person might burn a cross in your yard? It won't be me, because I despise that sort of thing. Furthermore, I am far from being rich and have no hatred for the wealthy. Guess what? Were it not for them, you and I might have a difficult time finding employment. Like it or not, the wealthy provide jobs and a way of life for many (didn't say all) of us, perhaps including you. Finally, I agree with you that "free speech" is a scarry thing in any society where narrow and dangerous minds prevail. It's like this: One is free to speak his/her mind as long as it is in harmony with what they think. Right?

I wasn't being sarcastic when I said that we MUST speak anonoymously on here. Have you ever wondered why there are more comments on here then in the Letter to the Editor section of the newspaper? It's becuase of the reprecutions you receive in this town when you express facts that hurt the rich and famous. Look at poor Mr. Barrett. The school board wasted thousands of dollars by taking him to court because he was trying to express his freedom of speech. You can't do that in this county- a county full of hypocricy. I don't want a cross burning in my yard because I say something about Mr. Jackson, or Ms. Braden, or Ms. McMasters. I'll say it here without worry of being taken to court. By the way, you rich people don't supply me with a job and wouldn't anyway because I don't fit your standard of country club, white man. I speak what is right and fact. This is a dirty dirty town.
I'd like to know who said that Mr.Miller quit teaching Math when he found out he couldn't coach. Back that up with fact please! You say he suffered the consequences--bull crap-he was gone by Ms. McMasters will, and there was nothing that he or anyone else could have done about it-except maybe TT, but he doesn't have the balls.

I asked the question, “How do you know?”
The night of the school board meeting, after the students found out Coach Miller would not be back, several parents and students attended the meeting and tried to address the board, but were unsuccessful. After the meeting adjourned, two RHS students requested to meet with Mr. Jackson privately in his office and did so.
They requested of Mr. Jackson to please allow Coach Miller to stay as RHS and teach math. Jackson said, “That is out of my hands, that is Ms. Masters call, not mine.”

When she was asked, her reply was, “That is not my decision, and it has to come from the central office.” She was well aware of the student’s feelings for Coach Miller because they wore tee shirts to school with messages of support for him. They hung signs on the fence at Richland in support of him. Parents contacted the news media, and all they received was, THE BLAME GAME!

The fact is he stopped teaching. Ask one of the students in his class. He was trying to protest and it backfired!! I am not defending the decision just trying to show there are two sides. As usual Mr. T is passing the blame. He has never taken the blame for any unpopular action. After all who did he blame for the fiasco at the board meeting. There is no way to show any facts while anonymous. Sorry. Miss. McMasters would have given Mr. T a list of teachers that she recommended he not rehire. The final decision was his. They are both to blame. Again ask some of the students in Miller's class if he was teaching classes as usual after he was told he would not be coach.

I find it very interesting how this post about RHS and the previous posts on the blog that was shut down, have brought out the frustration of so many people.
Can't Mr. Jackson and the school board see how much controversy Ms. McMasters causes at that school and how unhappy people are with her? What is wrong with this picture? Why won't anyone get rid of her? Does she have something on someone that she could tell (blackmail)? I've heard she has threatened to sue if they get rid of her? ON what basis? Of course, that is only a rumor, but the fact is, it is quite obvious that the woman has killed the morale of the teachers and students and she is still the administrator. What is it going to take for Mr. Jackson to move her back into the classroom? I know he doesn't want her up there at the central office with him. What does it take Mr. Jackson?

I agree wtih the person who said that Ms. McMasters would be different if she had a child of her own. She doesn't understand what she is doing to the hearts and minds of the kids at the school because she doesn't have one of her own to identify with. It's really sad. When she gets on the intercom every morning and says, "I love you, and there is nothing you can do about it." you should hear what the students say. It's sad. She doesn't love them, and they know it. Actions speak louder than words. Everytime she gets on the intercom, the students are like Oh my God. They don't even want to hear her voice. Do you know that her own sister-in-law left Richland when Ms. McMasters was named principal. What does that tell you? Unfortunatley the kids in the Richland school zone don't have the same luxury of movinig to another shcool like Joy mcMasters did.
To address the person who suggested that those who complain get a college degree? I have one. It doesn't do me any good in controlling the atmosphere I work in at the school. I teach because I love the kids. Money has little to do with it. Even my college degree can't fix the morale problem at Richland. You mention that there isn't much to the will of the students at Richland if they can't handle the principal. Why should such young ones be subjected to someone who downgrades them at every point? They will have enough of that to deal with as adults. Give them a break right now and let them enjoy their teenage lives while they are young. You can only treat a dog bad too many times before his spirit is broken, so imagine how these kids feel?
Surely the board can find a replacement for the principal even if it's someone from AL. He or she can rent an apppt. in town and we won't complain if this person comes to work, acknowledges the employeees and students in a positive manner, and gets out of the office long enough to show concern for thosee around. It's been such a sad situation at that school for too long.
It's time for a change.!!!!!!!! If good teachers can be let go for unrealistic reason, she can too.

Any comments on the head football coach at Richland? How has he been able to hold his position for so long??????????? He has a less than steller record as coach, and the the playbook seems to be designed around his son. How does Ms. McMasters support his staying at Richland when other coaches are let go so easily? Is this another example of the Giles County citizen being allowed to stay in his position only because he is from here? The football program there is quite embarassing. What about it? Can't we replace this man and get a real coach in there?

I hear another coach is in trouble at RHS. Along with Coach Taylor grabbing a student during practice last week, now Coach Hall has been talking very unprofessional about one of his players.
I am just curious as to why these two coaches haven't been let go when Coach Miller was so easily kicked out?
I know the football coach is from around here, so I guess that's why he is still here, but I'm not sure about Coach Hall and where he is from. I do know that his father-in-law is a school board member (Mr. Kennedy), so that might have something to do with his not being fired on the spot.
Again, I see discrimination out the yin yang at RHS when some are allowed to stay, and others are out the door because they aren't "liked" by certain parents or aren't from the county, or don't have any political influence.
What is up with the inconsistency of Ms. McMasters and Tee Jackson in who goes and who stays? A simple answer in procedure is requested.

Saturday, October 28, 2006 5:16:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The whole Kennedy family clan is so far up the RHS behind that Chad Hall will go no where. I tell you NO Where. His job is so secure that no one will touch it. So you might as well move on to another subject. Hate to say it but it is true.

Saturday, October 28, 2006 5:56:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

WEll, I don't think we SHOULD move on to another subject. Whether they (the Kennedy's) kiss tail or not, the same rules should apply to him,as apply to every other teacher or coach at that school.
Again, the "good 'ol boy" situation in this school is a reason to get rid of Tee Jackson and Ms. McMasters. It's not fair, it's not right, it's not ethical.
The school reminds me of Enron. WE all get pooped on and lied to. Eventually, someone has to go down and it must be the principal. She lies and makes things up to suit her tail, as does Mr. Jackson. Each blames the other for letting go or not letting go of a teacher or coach, and no one is ultimately held accountable because neither will admit to whom makes the final decision. They pass the buck back and forth. It's a crying shame at all the mess that goes on at that school!!!
Parents, contact your board members (excluding Mr. Kennedy) who is, as you said, so far up Tee's behind it's pathetic, and let's get rid of the good ol boy system around there and get some ethical people in the administration. Mr. Lax(son) is as spinless as any of them. He bows down to McMasters as if he were afraid of her kicking him out the door too. He's the athletic director and should make the decision that Coach Hall has done wrong and should go, but I don't think Ms. McMasters let's him make any decisions. She just uses him as a pawn in her game. It's all a game to her- who she can get to say this or that about whomever. She uses scare tactics in her investigations and thus controls every situation to her advantage.
Your day is coming lady and we can't wait to see it happen.

That is why I said it may just be best to move on...I did take my kids out of Richland and put them in Bridge Builders because that is the only action I could get results on. I used to have the fire you have and I appreciate you for it!

In response to you who moved on. PLEASE don't give up. Keep the fire burning!
They want you to give up. WE parents have to stick together and report all cases of discrimination, falsehoods, inappropriate actions, etc...
This is what makes America what it is. WE fight to the end for our children. They depend on us to do for them what they can't. As taxpayers, we owe it to them to get the education they deserve under the leadership that best represents them.
Keep knocking on that door and making those phone calls and going to those school board meetings. Call Beverly Murrey( 363-7979) and Jim Greene- have documentation, ask them to come to Booster Club meetings, and in time, they will do what has to be done to this administration.

Uncle Silas was already late but he couldn’t go no place. He was a sitin there when he saw this big ole sign that said there were 50 ellehants. Well uncle Silas figured he’d just count them ellephants
Then he’d hurry up an cross when da last one passed by. He started a countin but he counted wrong and put that truck in gear and started a cross that street when he runed flat dab into another ellephant an kilt it. A bout a week later he got this here bill from da circus that said he owed them $700,000.00. Uncle Silas aint never had no money like than so he called them circus folks and said whats wrong with you folks I only kilt one ellephant how could it cost that much. You no what that circus man said? He said he noed only one ellephant was kilt but when uncle Silas hit that last ellephant he pulled the tails out of all them other 49.

Yes, you are correct. It is all politics.
I have a question.
Is there a way to have an evaluation taken on Ms. McMasters by the parents of the children who attend that school? I know the teachers filled one out on her last yr, but the results were never published. I know they are at the central office somewhere. I ask that a board member find the results of that evaluation. I also ask that a board member have an anonymous evaluation filled out by the parents of every student at that school. If the teachers must be evaluated on their job performance, then she should be as well. If is is found that she is inefficient as a principal, then the taxpayers should be able to have her removed. Mr. Jackson isn't going to do it, but the parents should have some authority over this through the board members.
Please contact your board members and let's get something official going. Enough talk. We need action!!

Administration didn't have anything planned as far as a welcome,pa system to introduce teams and coaches, or national anthem prior to the start of games.(even the notorious Mr. Gonzales had these pre-game rituals performed @ his school in spring hill) 2 moms thought the omission was horrible, one of them went to administration the next day to ask if it was ok to get someone to announce the remaining games and do national anthem. well, true to form,ms. mcm wasn't @ school that am,so athletic director/ asst. principle Mr. Laxson gave the ok.apparently the big mc didn't like her power being usurped by all American rituals because all _ _ _ _ broke loose! she had a coaches meeting blasting them, called TSSAA, and spent $8.00+ to mail restricted letters to the "offending" moms. if that isn't morale killing, power tripping? imagine that going on every other day of your child's school year!

I am very interested in a watch group, but as a student stated earlier, the teachers and students would only be punished one way or another. Ms. McMasters is very intimidating and everyone is afraid of what she might do to those who participate. I'm telling you--she is evil and you can't do anything to piss her off. Just like the money she wasted sending ceritified letters to the soccer moms. She will get your butt if there is anyway possible to do so. That is the only reason teachers and students post here anonymously. The students can't "sit out" in front of cameras--they will be suspended. Teachers can't speak freely, they will be fired. I don't know the answer to this situation. Even as the student said, an evalutaion would be "lost" in the red tape at the central office. T.T. doesn't want her working up there with him, so he lets everything slide. I heard about 2 yrs. ago that she threatened to sue if they got rid of her. On what basis, I do not know, but she must know something on someone. Maybe we could get some of the students who have already graduated and who partied with her at one time, to come out and tell their stories. There is nothing she could do to them. That is the only solution I can come up with for now. Or, retired teachers, or parents of students who have already graduated could come out of the woodwork. It has to be people who have no fear of retrubation under her authority at this time. Someone could place an ad in the paper or editorial asking for these people to come forward with their documentations. This is the only solution to our problem with her at this time.
An audit of the books would help too. I've heard that she will not show them to the Booster Club and that she has even gone as far as to say that Jean Farrar has threatened to quit because the booster club wants to see the books. Shame Shame Ms. McMasters. You know Ms. Farrar would show the books if you would allow her to. The only reason she would threaten to quit is because you are making her cover something up and driving her insane.
Back to the watch group. I'm sure the teachers and students would be all for it if someone would get one started and not allow Ms. Mac to shut it down or "butter" you up like she always does when it comes showdown time.
By the way, does anyone know why she hasn't fired Coach Hall yet? It almost seems like she is working hard to help him legally to get out of the mess he is in. Why would she do such a thing?? Duh!!! Should't he be let go like the two other coaches were for much more minor reasons than calling a player the names he called his player? I see DISCRIMINATION written all over the wall here!!!!!!!!!!!! Board memeber daddy in law maybe? I'm sickened.

Mr. Barrett,
The education level of Tennessee students is already low enough. Let's not encourage missing additional days of school to protest. But rather, how about some parents finally get involved with what is going on with the school system. There are numerous postings on here complaining about how things are run by Ms. McMasters, but where is everyone during the school board meetings? There sure are a lot of people griping, but I haven't seen hardly anyone (excluding you and maybe one or two others)actually attend meetings and stand up and speak (the 2 minutes that are allowed) about the situation. Parents have got to decide what they want to do, if they want to do something. And the teachers have got to do something as well. I really do not understand the mentality that they (teachers) cannot stand together and address the school board as a GROUP. If they are scared of retaliation, it is hard to retaliate against and replace a "group" of teachers.
Here's an idea. Why not get a group of parents together to attend the next school board meeting? The group needs to be "BIG" to have an impact. And each parent needs to be prepared to speak their 2 minutes allowed about the most important issue effecting their child. This does not need to be a name calling bash though, but rather an intellectual, factual presentation of the issues of concern. If name calling gets started, the message loses its impact. At this meeting, invite all the Nashville and Huntsville media. This should help rattle the cages.

I like the idea of a mass meeting of parents and teachers at a school board meeting with the media there.
Mr. Barrett, could we ask of you to publish in the paper ( a large ad) the time and place of a town hall meeting of all who would be interested -- and there we can discuss an agenda for the board meeting? At this town meeting, all with documentation could set up an agenda, get our meeting approved by the school board before they meet so that they can't ignore us like they did you, and then each person present their 2 minutes worth of dissatisfaction or proof of things that she has done wrong, such as the inconsistencies of punishment amongst students and teachers or coaches, her inability to produce the amt. of money the Booster Club has, her attendance record, her unpublished evaluation by the teachers last year, etc... If anyone has a lawyer friend to bring with them, this would only help us get things together properly.
Once this is done, and the school board approves us on their agenda, the media could be called in and proper procedures would be followed. I agree with the person who said it shouldn't be a name calling bash, but the real truths of Ms. McMasters as an administrator.
WE have to get organized as a respectfable group first, then do what we have to do at the board meeting. TOGETHER WE CAN TRY TO BOOT HER OUT. It will be hard to do considering that Tee Jackson doesn't want her up there with him, but we can sure try it. What do you think?

Having the media come to town is "anarchy"? Where are you from?
This is America and we have the freedom to get things done that our administration won't get done.
I didn't suggest the students walk out and wouldn't recommend it. I do recommend the parents and teachers taking action though. It's are responsibility to do it for our kids.
I will send Mr. Barret a check for the ad myself he will agree to set it up. Money means nothing to me when it's for a good cause!!!!!!!!!!
Mr. Barrett, if you agree to get this going, put your address on here, and I'll send you the money for the ad. I don't mind doing that one bit--I'd LOVE to do it.
Do you all agree with the idea of a town meeting as I suggested earlier? If not, this is all talk and we might as well just quit running our mouths on here and sit back and do nothing. I mean business here if the rest of you do.

Read the post, please. By "anarchy" I'm talking about the suggestion that the students walk out of school and the news media called in to air the dirty laundry. It is worded to where you and anyone else can understand fully what I am talking about.

The public is entitled to use the courthouse since we own it. Probably would be an excellent place to hold a town meeting. For publicity, in addition to this blog we could use handouts, use plastic banners and write up something as an article for the newspaper since it would be a news item. Webederh!

On Dec 3rd 2004 the now-defunct organisation called CART held a town meeting at the Tenn Tech Center on E College St..To get use of their hall (holds maybe 150) all you need to do is go there and ask .
Good parking, good acoustics, good facility .
Go for it

Okay,
We have two possible meeting places. That's great.
Now, we need all the facts, not opinions we can get!
Everyone who has facts of things that have been done wrong, gather them together. I believe an anonymous letter to teachers will be going out soon. Once we have all this together, let's announce the date, time, place to meet and get everything in order for a board meeting.
It may take a few weeks to get all this together, but as each of us work individally to get what we need, we can post on here that we have our part of the paper work and then get together. Think of anything you can that has happened in the last 3 yrs. Get with past students that may have information. Think, think, think.
READY, SET, GO!

I think Mr. Barrett should call for a full and immediate investigation of everything he finds fault with in this county. What do you think? Of course, that leaves none of us out, does it?

I think the date should be published not only on here, but also in the local paper. As I stated earlier, an ad should be put in the paper with info about what we are trying to do. I don't want to do it, but I will pay for Mr. Barrett's part in doing it for us if he is willing.
Yes, Mr. Barrett can surely find fault with as many people as he investigates, just as all of us can, however, he seems to investigate the facts more thoroughly than most of us do.
Sure, we all have faults, but we aren't administrators of the school that our children attend, therefore, Ms. McMasters' faults are the more important matter facing us who are on this blog right now trying to make her responsible for her wrongdoings and get her out of the position she is in. We don't need a lying, discrimitory hypocrite like her running our school. She is dishonest and, I believe, hiding money. This is enough for me, and I believe the rest of you concerned parents out there to try to get her out of the position she is in.
As I stated earlier, begin getting your facts together. If you don't have any, then we are wasting our time. As you all get them, let us know that you are ready to meet. Once we see around 10 people say that they have facts, we will begin setting up the meeting to address the "big" meeting with the board.

I think we shouldn’t put all the responsibility on Mr. Barrett shoulders. I certainly think he would gladly help but he can’t do it all by himself. We all know he would be immediately be hounded for his effort. If the ad is put in the local paper I think it should say, paid for by a group and not just Mr. Barrett. I just think that is unfair.

Sounds fair to me. What should we call our group?

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I spoke with Mr. Barrett regarding helping to organize a group. Both he and I are willing to be involved if it is a group that addresses all the problems in the county in addition to schools. However, we would like to know if the people having the problems at Richland are interested in county government as a whole or if once the school problems are resolved/addressed would you no longer want to be involved in working with a group of citizens still trying for accountability in all areas of county government? Please do not misunderstand this question. The reason I ask is that a "watch-dog" group takes a great deal of work and commitment on the part of all of us. Reluctancy to share the load was one of the reasons CART no longer exists.

The TN Tech Centre is a very nice place to meet but it takes 3 - 4 weeks to get it booked and approved. I know, as I made the Dec 2004 arrangements.

If enough people are receptive to getting together, maybe we should have a small organizational meeting with 10 - 12 people to make plans for a larger group. In the meantime, parents, students and teachers could be getting their documentation together as suggested above. Thanks.

I am very happy that you have talked to Mr. Barrett and that you are working to get something done here rather that just talk about it.
Thank you for your work.
We can reserve the TN Tech Center for sometime in January. I figure it will take that long to get all documentation together. If we meet as a small group in the beginning, we can make notes as to what we need to be working on for our next meeting. I am very willing to work with the problems of the govt. here in town as well. Richland isn't the only place in this town that has problems. Richland is only one example of many things that are wrong with the school system, and I'm sure there are many more in the govt.
As you mentioned, a watch dog group takes a lot of work, but I'm willing to do it.
So, everyone reading this blog, get your stuff together, call one another, and let's decide on when to meet and we'll go from there. Once we have our first meeting, we can then advertise in the paper our intent and future meetings.
I will take out an ad in the paper myself. No problem.

One suggestion or maybe more by the time I get through. Everyone who has a complaint and would like to share it you can feel comfident in sending it in writing to two school board members you all feel you can trust. Don't be afraid to sign it. I promise it will not be a document that can get repercussions for you or your family. A lot of these letters with proof to back up what you are saying will be used as Mr. Jackson not doing his job. When the school board goes to evaluate him for his performance the things that have occured at Richland shool is solely his responsibility. Keep in mind he is the ONLY employee of the school board. He is the one to be held accountable for ALL that has gone wrong at one or all schools in the system. He is the one who has let Richland get in the mess they are in. He is the one who will not listen to the parents and teachers and do something about what is going on. He, he, he is the great fall of this school system and the pressure has to be so great that he will resign. His contract is problely on the up and up until 2009. One main difference will be getting the even number of candidates for school board in 2008 completely changed to people who want to see something done for the Giles County School System and not padding pockets. Pick one good candidate that can win and run that person hard.
Try to get the teachers who left to write their reasons for leaving. That would be a great tool as to what is going on.
Teachers that read this can feel free to write the letters as well. Don't feel threatened. Everyone take a stand.

I neither defend nor uphold anything at RHS, because I don't know the facts. Is that what you would like me to say? I said it.

I agree with the post about sending documentation to your board memeber, or at least one or two of them that you trust.
I believe the survery being sent to teachers by mail should have a comment section and these surveys be shared with the board memebers too. Their job is to represent us, and they have more power up there at the central office than we parents do. We elected them to make Mr. Jackson accountable and I believe that is what a couple of them are working hard to do.
I ask that those soccer moms share their certified letters with the school board members as well.
To the one who commented on the Boston Tea party. What is wrong with a modern day Pulaski Tea Party? As American citizens, it is our job to make sure govt. is run properly and when we see a problem, work to correct it. Let's be soldiers for our town. As the earlier post stated: It's time to take a stand!

anonymous: this is the letter, "this letter is being sent in order to address issues which occurred at the TSSAA District Girl's Soccer Tournament held at Richland School on Tuesday night, Oct.17. During the event, the public address announcer was asked to make statements which both my athletic director and i had specified would not be permitted at that time. In addition, a written statement which had been given to the announcer to read had never been approved by my athletic director or by me, nor did we have any prior knowledge of such statement. Coaches were also approached concerning game business without proper authorization. It is the responsibility of the host school during any TSSAA tournament to create a neutral and sportsmanlike atmosphere for all teams involved. Because of these issues, I have contacted TSSAA and issued a formal letter of apology to the opposing team's school. It must be understood that all activities and/or decisions involving Richland School must be authorized and approved through the administration of the school. I sincerely hope that this letter will suffice to correct this matter. I deeply appreciate your efforts in assisting our school and would like to thank you for the time and effort that you have spent in working to improve the school and facilities. Parents are truly a vital part of the educational process. I am always willing to listen to any ideas or suggestions which you may have, and it is my hope that you will continue to support the school, staff, and students in apositive manner."

How can parents support you McMasters when you are the most negative person alive. You make people miserable just by looking at you. If you are doing this to get attention you definitely are getting it. You are a sad excuse for someone who is to promote morale and support for everyone associated with your school. You look like apologizing to the schools and the TSSAA. You aren't around long enough to know what is going on so parents have to do something to make their children proud of the true mess you have done and Mr. Jackson has allowed you to do. You have let Richland school become a joke. It's not a joke about the kids or parents, but you and some of your staff in general. Do the world a favor and drop off of it. I'm sure you would never be missed since you aren't around anyway. And for God sakes don't put that air head of assistant in your place. He just makes the motion of living and passing the time. Was Ms. McMaster at the soccer game in question???????????????? Was she at school when the announcer asked for clearance in what could or could not be said?
If not, then she has no business writing this letter to parents.
Is it true that Mr. Laxson gave permission for what was read by the announcer? If so, why didn't she write him a letter or address him with any mistakes rather than writing to the parents? This letter is so much an example of how she feels that she must be in CONTROL of EVERYTHING even though she isn't at school to authorize business at hand.
I also noticed that she started off repremanding, then as usual, buttering you up and telling you how much she appreciates you. This how she works and this is how she will do when a meeting is held and all is brought before the board. That is why it is soooo important to get as much factual documentation as possible.
I am ready for a meeting whenever all of you are. From the meeting, we can organize and decide which direction we need to go.
Has the survey to teachers been sent out yet?

We NEED to know whether Miss McMasters or Mr. Laxson was at the soccer game or not. TSSAA requiers that an administrator be at all ball games. One post says she was there and one says she wasn't. We need a FACT on this. I know there have been other ballgames where neither was present, so this is something that should be kept up with. When they aren't there, they are in violation of TSSAA rules.
Also, as someone stated in an earlier post, if Mr. Laxson gave approval that morning of what could be said, what was said at the game differently (if anything). This should also be documented.
Her letter states that coaches were approached concerning game business without proper authorization. What was she meaning by this? Is no one allowed to speak to coaches before a game? Who approached the coaches? If she was there, why didn't SHE handle the matter? That is why an administrator is required to be at every game. This makes me think that she wasn't there, or our lifeless athletic director was there, but didn't know or care what was going on. Need to know the answer to this please!
Also, something was stated about business being unsportsmanlike and that is why she was going to write a letter of apology. Do you know specifically what was done that was unsportsmanlike?
I'm glad you've contacted TSSAA. You are being very thorough. Could you also contact the principal or atletic director at GCHS to see if they received a letter of apology and whether something unsportsman- like happened that day?
Please document EVERYTHING as you seem to be doing. That is the only way to win.

Can our board members request a copy of the letter of apology? Oh, by the way, she was NOT at school today either. Her attendance record needs to be checked. We all know when she is not at school, but who will take a students word, NOT HER?

Wednesday, November 08, 2006 6:46:00 PM

I don't see why anyone couldn't request a copy of the letter of apology. Seems someone at GCHS would have it though, if she actually sent it. If she didn't, it's just another example of her lying and trying to intimidate others. As I said earlier, the speaker at the soccer game should call GCHS and ask if that letter was sent, or even ask the principal herself for a copy of the letter. I'm curious as to what she would say to you. Probably that it's none of your business. However, if she has nothing to hide, and she "appreciates you all so much" she should gladly show you a copy of the letter just as a follow up to the letter she sent you.
Some teachers are keeping up with her days missed, so don't worry about your child's word against ours. Records are being kept!!!
I do believe she attended a TSSAA meeting today though with Mr. Laxson. I wonder if gas mileage was paid for as well as meals? I know that most coaches have to attend a number of meetings and their meals and mileage aren't paid for. I will check on that. I would be willing to bet though, that their expenses were covered since Tee's expenses are covered.
Somehow they are more priviledged than we are.
Has anyone confirmed whether or not she was at the soccer game?

I know I am about to be attacked. But I have to state this. I am not going to put my name solely because my child is going to be new at Richland. However, I have just registered my child at RHS. My child is coming from a home school setting. I was asked to review this blog site before I made my decision on enrollment. After doing this I was uneasy about my decision in letting my child attend the school. My child feels that there is something missing from being home schooled. I called RHS and Ms. McMasters was in a meeting. I left my name and # for a call back. In less than an hour she called me back. I have to admit I had a defense up because of the info. on this blog. But to my Surprise Ms. McMasters was very polite, helpful, concerned, professional, excited to have a child registering in the school. I couldn't have asked for a more pleasant experience. I told her of the negativity that I had read and heard. She just answered me with kindness and let me know that if ever a problem arose academically or personally to bring it to her attention and she would do her best to help me and or my child. I felt very comfortable and relaxed with her. I believe she genuinely cared. Vicki Beard was also very nice and professional in handling the testing and scheduling. I have no complaints what so ever. I had to see for myself. And from what I seen she has a lot of responsibility and has to answer for a lot of people's actions. She has a hard job. She is trying to go by the rules and be fair. Now, I am not going to respond to any comments made about what I have experienced at Richland. I refuse to argue on this site. In my conclusion, Ms. McMasters is a very dedicated principal who really cares for the students and the school. I do not know her personally but the feeling I gathered from her is that she is a strong woman, dedicated principal who goes by the rules. If needed, I would support her because I feel she will stand up for what’s right even if she is in the minority. Richland is lucky to have her. You all may not realize it until it’s too late.

We all appreciate your letter, and will definitely not argue with you. Ms. Beard is a wonderful guidance counselor and will do ANYTHING for your child -- as will the majority of the teachers.
You haven't been in the system to know what REALLY goes on, as the other bloggers on here have. Ms. McMasters is very deceiving and is a master at coming across as very caring and concerned. However, as I stated previously, she is a deceiving con artist. Behind that nice voice and those convincing and nurturing words is an evil person. Imagine a witch sitting at her desk and that is her you are speaking to.
The TEACHERS at that school will be the ones who take care of your child--not the principal. Some of the best in the county ( who she hasn't run off) are at that school and keep it running smoothly.
I hope you never have to experience what others have experienced. In general, it's the teachers and hard working parents who are treated rudely and back- stabbed. I believe most of the comments on here are made by them and of course, a few students who have been at the school long enough to see her in action. As long as your child keeps her shirt tail tucked in, she'll be okay. If you decide to help as a parent in a sporting event or in the booster club, you will slowly see her true colors. We welcome you to join us in these activites and then you can make a decision about her in a yr. or two--if she is still there.

Richland is NOT lucky to have her and that is why almost 200 posts are on here concerning the things that are going on at that school. You can't judge a person by their words over the phone. Remember the old adage "actions speak louder than words."
I do hope your child has a wonderful year though and believe she will because of the caring teachers.

You are right about that. I don't know how Mrs. Mc holds up under the criticism. But you know there are some people in this county who see nothing right with anyone who is a public figure. They themselves forget that they too have made mistakes in their own lives. But they are quick to point out the mistakes in everyone else. I think it a shame, but that's free speech I suppose.
I am sure you made an enemy of Mr. Barrett and others who are continually doing the pointing.

I don't mean to be attacking in any way, but I do wonder why you are afraid to put your name on here if you think the principal is such a fine person.
If you are willing to stand up for her if asked, then it seems to me you would be willing to sign your name. I would never put mine on here, because I teach there and know what the consequences would be. You wouldn't have anything to worry about though by speaking in a positive manner about her.
Please don't be afraid of those who write on this site. They are trying to make a change in administration, but aren't on here to attack anyone who likes Ms. McMasters.
Just a curious question.

I am happy you had such a pleasant experience signing your child up at RHS, but, how in the world can you make such an acclamation of support and willing to stand up for her based on your first meeting with the principal?

I do know her personally, since childhood, she is intelligent, got good grades in school, basically a good person but wrong for the position she holds. You may think she follows all rules; however, there is a rule she is lacking in and that is the rule of common sense. You have to pick your battles with children or you will lose credibility with them and they will refuse to listen to constant no’s and put-downs.

I absolutely cannot wait for the new blog that Mr. Barret has promised to begin soon.
This man will have FACTS that will blow your mind. Fortunatley, he doesn't have anything to lose by posting these facts on this website like others of us do.By the way, the person who said the parent made herself an enemy of Mr. Barrett is being ridicuols (misspelled). Why would that parent be an enemy of a man who just tries to make sure things are handled appropriately? You just showed your ignorance and prejudice against this man and those of us who are trying hard to make a difference.
In regards to the parent who had the pleasant experience with Ms. McMasters, she didn't meet her, she only spoke to her over the phone. I can't imagine supporting someone immediately after speaking to them over the phone and not knowing anything else about that person.
As to the person who suggested that we citizens are always "down" on those in superior positions. We aren't always down on all of them--just the ones who abuse their power. Unfortunatley, those who do a good job aren't recognized for doing so. That is the way life seems to be and we should do better in recognizing those people. 'The good aren't recognized and the bad are down-trodden.' So, the moral of the story is, if you are in a position of power, you had better be doing what you are supposed to be doing in an ethical way, or you will be talked about. Ms. McMasters is not an ethical person; therefore, she is talked about. If she would clean up her act and be a fair and honest principal, this site wouldn't have so many posts. Ms. Newton is an administrator at that school, and I don't see people bashing her--probably because she handles most affairs in a professional matter. Other principals in the county aren't bashed because they also do a decent job as principals. Mr. Hobbs was a wonderful principal while at Richland. He wasn't perfect, but no where near as bad as Ms. McMasters is. Do you know that when he retired, she didn't even allow a retirement party for him at the school? She talks about sportsmanship--what kind of sportsmanship was that???????? She thinks she has to have total control over EVERYTHING that happens at that school, and it just doesn't work that way. People have to work together, like a village, as I've heard it put, and she just doesn't allow it to be that way. It's her way or the highway, and that's what has so many people trying to get rid of her. It's not a comfortable atmosphere at that school and it's all because of her. The students and teachers shouldn't have to go to school or to work under such conditions. The morale is so bad that no one even listens to her when she is making announcements each day. There is no respect and when the respect is gone, the person in power needs to step down or be replaced.
The school needs your prayers because most of those who are there everyday are completely miserable.

I swore to myself I wouldn't do this, but I feel I need to clarify a couple of things I wrote. By the way I am the new parent. I am not posting my name because I do not want my child to start off on the wrong foot. Yes I know I said good things. However, it seems to me that on this site there is a lot of negative (I am not saying whether it is justified or not). This may be very silly, but with so much negative by parents and students posted on this blog I do not want my child to reap that at school. My child is not informed on the goings on in the school (pos. or neg) to defend a position in the matter. Next, I did speak with Ms. McMasters on the phone and in person. Next, what I meant by 'stand up for her if ask' was I am willing to tell people if ask that my first experience with Richland was pleasant. Ms. McMasters was very pleasant to me. As a person pointed out, they are right I have no idea of what is going on in the school. I have been out of the loop for years. I was just simply stating that my experience was pleasant. I hope and pray the next four years will be the same or should I say for as long as we are there.

sorry,my "amen" was for the 8:19 post.but to 9:17 post, please join as much activities as you can at school, so you can get the big picture. also, attend school board meetings. parents and children are what keep the school moving in a positive direction, not ms. mcmasters.

Amen again to the 10:23 post. You posted a great response to the parent who is already afraid of what her child might reap if she were to give her real name. Even though the parent praised Ms. McMasters, she is already afraid of starting her child off on the wrong foot. Why would you be afraid of that if you were so impressed by the principal?
I promise you as a parent that you won't reap anything negative from the teachers. You seem to be contradicting yourself when you say that you would stand up for Ms. McMasters, but are already afraid of what might happen if you leave your name. I don't want to sound negative, but the only person you need be afraid of is the principal. My dealings with her everyday are, as in your words, 'pleasant', but at the end of the day, I know that she has her own agenda and will back stab me in a second. WE are just warning you that she is not as she seems, and that is why we invite you to get involved in the Booster Club or other activities so you can see the true Ms. McMasters. Best of luck to you and your child. I know she will be fine with the teachers, but you won't if you mess with the boss.
Just make sure her shirt tail is tucked in as that seems to be Ms. McMasters' main priority. I can ask a child for a hall pass every day, and them not have one, but if they have their shirt tail out, they could be on their way to alternatiive school. Her priorities are so messed up. I beg of you to become a memeber of the Booster Club and then try to get a true answer as to where all the money is. Place her back to the wall and see what happens. I don't believe she has shown us the true money trail snce the club was started by her.
I know that the former baseball coach raised tens of thousands of dollars for the baseball field and facilites, but because the checks from the Titans games were sent to the school in his name rather than hers, she threw a royal fit and demanded they be sent in HER name. Doesn't that tell you something? I think that is why the "books" have never been made exactly public at the Booster Club meetings.

speaking of money, she made a man pay to get into the jr. high game last night with just 4 minutes left in the game! is this common practice at other schools or sporting events? does any one know?

obvisiously the new parent is just nervous. The parent has read this information and then met Ms. McMasters and seen her nice side (fake). As I read the posts that the new parent wrote I took it as she did not mention her or her childs name because she didn't want the ppl who dislike Ms. McMasters to ask her child questions as to why his/her parent posted something nice. Anyway I don't know just the way I read it. Every parent has the right to be nervous when entering any new school. I do invite as well you to join as much as you can. Mostly for you to be able to see for yourself. I am a teacher at Richland myself. So, to the new parent if you have questions ask them. I will try to help answer them.

I have been to litteraly hundreds of ballgames in my lifetime, and have never ever seen anyone take up money after half-time!!!!!!!!!!!
This is another example of how unethical she is. Call TSSAA and ask them about it. I'd almost say it was illegal!
She probably needed money to buy a hamburger after the game.

Well, what she did isn't illegal, but it does show how greedy she is. I can't imagine anyone, except her, doing such a thing. Honestly, I would be embarassed to do that to someone, but she isn't embarrased by anything.
SAD SAD.

i was at the game to and saw her take the money from the person who came in so late. ive always had good dealings with her but, someone told me about this blog and after reading it all i wondered if i might be wrong about her. when i saw that at the game i coudlnt beleive it! i thought, maybe the negative things are true! well i wanted to know so, i asked him. he said she told him he did not have to pay but, he volunteered to anyway and donated the money. i think people are jumping to conclusions. maybe its the same for all the other "facts" on here. i have to say, i am ashamed i ever read it and, even more ashamed i even considered beleiving it. from here on out, i will form my opinion by my dealings with her and not by malicous posts. from my experience, i think shes doing a good job. no, she isnt perfect but, i dont know anyone who is. i cant imagine having to do her job which is already a tough one and deal with all this negative to. especailly negative that isnt true. i think we would all be better off if we looked for the good and positive things in people instead of trying to seek out the negative. it seems to me this blog is just about being negative. i wont be back on here again.

Who said Ms. McMasters is a "fine" person? I just think this little group of whining complaining people need to consider the beam in their own eyes before attempting to cast the mote from her eyes. We are all human and subject to making mistakes. But those who refuse to consider their own shortcomings will gladly throw stones at yours, especially if you disagree with them. THAT is a shame. There's so much good in the worst of us and at least some bad in the best of us. My humble suggestion to some of you is that you get a life.

All of us posting here have a life. It's just that working with her makes our lives hard.
I'm sorry it all seems so negative on here, but the truth is, she is a negative person and the posts on here prove that. She has made life miserable for many many people, and we are just trying to make it better for us by shining the light on the things that make us so miserable at that school.. There are so many other qualified people out there who could have her job and make life more bearable for those who work for her in the many aspects of the school: teaching, coaching, volunteering, parenting, etc...
I believe that most of the people posting here are people who do have a life, and that is what inspires them to try to create a better one for those who suffer under her negative control. Does that make any sense? Those who don't have a life, sit back and let the world go on around them, accepting whatever comes their way. WE aren't like that. We want what is best for all involved in the school and are trying to make it clear that it's just not all hunky dory around there.

WOW! If you feel that strongly, then why not petition the School Board with your grievances rather than mounting this smear campaign against her? Isn't that the right thing to do? Wouldn't you prefer that, were you in Ms. Mac's shoes? I believe you would. It is absolutely shameful what some have said on here. And, as for posting anonymously, look at it this way: it might prevent some from being sued for slander.

It's not "hunky dory" anywhere unless you find the utopian society. Let me know when you find one!
