Expensive Stadium or Legacy To A Big Ego

Here are the latest numbers on the proposed cost for remodeling Sam Davis Park. Presently there are three options that are being discussed.

A 1,500 seat stadium costing between 412,000 and 675,000 dollars. Added to this are 2,950 sq.ft. of restroom space for 10 men and 19 women at a cost of $740,000.

A 2,000 seat stadium for 550,000 dollars. Added to this are 3,300 sq,ft. of restroom space for 13 men and 23 women at a cost of $825,000.

A 2500 seat stadium for 687,000 to 1,125,000 dollars. Added to this are 3,700 sq.ft. of restroom space for 15 men and 27 women at a cost of $925,000.

These prices are based on the following formula.

$25,00 sq.ft. for pre-cast concrete with brick inlay.

$25.00 sq. ft. for concrete block and brick verneer.

$250.00 sq. ft. for restrooms.

$275.00 per seat using steel and aluminum.

$450.00 per seat using pre-cast concrete.

$2,500.00 per parking space including curbs, lights and drainage.

These prices do not include doing anything to the surrounding walls or press box.

The idea expressed so far for paying for this stadium is to borrow $6,000,000.00 (6 million dollars) and increase the sales tax to pay it back over twenty years. The question is will the sales tax increase be enough or will a property tax increase also be added? Allen Barrett

Whatever it takes to get this magnificent stadium back to its prestigious shape. Giles County should be proud of this stadium, and should keep preserve it properly!

It would be cheaper to send whoever wants to spend $6 munchies off to bellmeed. Maybe we could get them a greeter job at their mansion & they could tell everyone welcom to "my" home & live happy ever after & so can we

I guess you think cheaper is better?

Cheaper is not always better nor is more expensive always worse. Since you have no problem with a stadium regardless of the cost perhaps you would be willing to make a large voluntary contribution to it's construction. Maybe you will be willing to head up a fund drive to raise the money or is it only agreeable if you take the money off other peoples tables? Don't forget this is totally separate from the sports park that's still being worked on. L. Cranston

When we get done with all the grand ideas, there will not be enough left over for an average Giles County family to feed their children. What business we have will be taxed out of town.

Buldoze the old bleachers down & put some grass seed in. What a beautiful place to bring a blanket, sit on the grass, and enjoy things God gave us.

We have a blueprint for failure & oppression - time to burn it & get real!

If someone or a group wants to build something on their own, go for it. It's the American way. If you want someone else to pay for it, get lost

If you want Pulaski and Giles County to die, then continue with your satification of run down facilities etc. I you want to progress, then I would suggest you search and find what the progressive communities are doing.

Building a Taj Mahal stadium like this will end up putting your children and grandchildren to paying for it long after the concrete walls and floors have cracked .
If the county gets the same contractor to do the restrooms as did the agri-park there'll be yet another disaster for years to come .(County commissioners are approving some study funds to figure out how to fix the agri-potty -yet again ) .
WHO is going to supervise this stupid contract for the county to be sure it meets current building codes ? The architect who designs it ? Nice work if we let him !! Fox in the chicken-house !! That's the Giles County Way with kickbacks for all .BOHICA GC!! (Bend Over Here It comes Again Giles County )

If the sports park is so dead why are plans still being made including expensive architect drawings?
What the "progressive communities" are doing is building infrastructure not sports parks and football fields. Those things come after the factories open and the wages are rising. Putting the cart before the horse may improve the view but sure isn't very productive. We don't even have county wide water and sewer services. Did you read in the paper that Lewisburg is going to run water lines from Cornersville to Milky Way?
Have you taken a look at many of the streets in town lately? Try driving by the Hickory House during lunch. We have a 1st class walking trail that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and most people are afraid to walk on it. We may not have many non-government jobs here but we're gonna have a million dollar stadium for 22 people to play on a few weeks each year. Should there not be a bit more involvement with setting appropriate priorities. Allen Barrett

This doesn't happen often, but, Mr. Barrett, I agree with you on this one. Why is it that the folks who run county and city government push getting a nice stadium that cost millions of $ and they could not find it in their hearts to give a measley discount on the water rates to out senior citizens because one commissioner could not support a discount without knowing how it would effect the water department? Sports are usually considered what is most important, not things like funding better education, teacher raises, etc. We have really put some fine folks running this get up we call Giles County and the City of Pulaski.

838 "Progressive"

Businesses progressed to somewhere else, smack dab out of the country & took all their worthwhile jobs with them! Why??? Because some like you, believe others should pay for their fun & their horrible blunders. What business would move to a place that can't manage their money, spends their savings for treats, & wants them to pay for it!

Who wouldn't want to come to a beautiful area that respects individuality, freedom, and other folks property! (you & who else?)

Progress should mean moving towards something worthwhile, not a stone tied around your neck. If you want it - buy some land, build it, sell tickets, & get rich. Me, do the buldozer & sod thing - it's a beautiful park that needs a little clean up.

Crawl back to your minimum wage job, then keep complaining about everything good, just because it will cost a little.

What incredible arrogance is shown by the anonymous poster at 3:46.
Yes, there are many minimum wage and just above jobs that people have to "crawl" to. They are serving your food, taking care of your children in daycare, checking you out at the grocery, standing in your defense in countries around the world and many, many other jobs that you obviously think is beneath you. It's many of those minimum wage earners that are paying the way for those making 70 and 100,000 dollar salaries.
I hope they are becoming sick of having to pay inflated prices for "everything good" the elite choose to force upon us. Milk is $5.00 a gallon because the "elite" want to make gas out of corn. Gasoline is at $3.00 a gallon because they prevent building new, more efficient refineries. Government cost triple because of the inefficiency of the high paid elite. The cost of almost everything has skyrocketed and those with minimum wage jobs are suppose to not complain because the "elite" declare it "good"? Here's the thing anonymous, when you are making your big salary you can afford the luxury of looking down at those making minimum wage and living on fixed incomes. A "little cost" doesn't hurt you as much. That extra twenty to you is nothing but to others it's the difference in having lunch or going without. According to you watering a football field shouldn’t be complained about because you deem it “good” but what if you don’t have water at your house or your stock pond is dry. A football stadium is a nice thing to have but a job is essential.
I've known people like you all my life and they disgust me with their "do as I say attitude". So I will gladly stand up with and for the little guy against your big shot arrogance anytime. Allen Barrett

I think the point was that with regressive thinking, the area would never prosper. If we keep thinking status quo, then our buildings, our streets, our sidewalks and our football stadiums would be unattractive enough to never get any good jobs.
It was a nice try WAB, but your arrogance is still unmatched.

WAB - very well put!

747 - If you think a new stadium is a good idea, then build one with your money, not mine. I, like the vast majority, haven't been to one in recent memory & have no desire to start. I'm sure those who don't go would rather spend their money where they want to go, not where you want to spend it.

You insinuate we can't afford upkeep on sidewalks. My sidewalk doesn't need fixing, cause I don't have & don't want one. If you have one - maintain it at your expense.

You want to spend $6 million for something you want, but also want someone else to pay for it. Seems like you had it, but failed to maintain it & failed to make sure it was built correctly. Moral of story - take care of things or do without! I like the buldozer solution!

PS: Can you name one business that selected a site, because the local government wanted to raise taxes?

progressive is a liberal term for walkng backwards with your hat on backwards - people can't tell if you're comming or going.

Regressive is when you start walking the other way & people still don't know if you're comming or going.

Object of the game - eventually no one knows if they are comming or going, & everyone will be a liberal.

We hear there is no law against deception, the government taking money under false pretenses, and so many more issues that makes a few hate WAB, malign him and others. It's about making a community subservient to those who are supposed to serve the citizens! We hear the warning of not judging others, as if it's a sin to discern evil from good, and do something about it!

I listened to a man reading a parable, about laws dating back to the beginnings of civilization, laws that our country is founded upon. That reading of precedence is in Ezekiel 23. The 29th statement woke me up with, "The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully." (Sound familiar?)

Then, it's followed by statement #30, "And I sought for a man among them, that should take up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none," (Where's the crowd?)

With all of the cars parked around all the churches Sunday morning & night, week days, marriages, births, deaths, and so forth; where is the crowd to stand in the gap, and say no with unbending conviction? What of the deceiver who walks in the ranks of the flock with dignified dress and demeanor, clutching a gold lettered Bible in their hand? Who will stand in the gap to deny the dignified deceiver and his following? Who will offend that out stretched hand of comradeship in matters of great communal dignity and importance? Perhaps, nothing is new a few thousand years later. Have the golden calves produced anything other than more usury, more hard times, and more deception to make nore broken plans create more of the same results?

Saying we have one hell of a mess on our hands is an understatement of literal truth! Be glad we have a few who will stand in the gap. The 31st message is a little more blunt, when none will stand for the many! Would that qualify as judgment for not judging & taking action? You are going to be judged, no matter what! Why not be judged for doing something right? Would saving the children from an institution founded on deceit qualify, or are you or a loved one employed & obligated?

After watching this for some time now, I had to say something.
What is the stadium use for? Highschool football and baseball as well as the college? Well are they going to chip in anything towards the redo? I wont benefit from it personally so why do I have to pay for it in the form of a tax hike, for the next twenty years? I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels this way either.
Also so, why are so many people hiding behind anonymous?

How did we go from a $100,000 to $5 million? Did Mr. Reedy & Mr. Holt know this when they took us past memory lane & before we knew it, were speared on lover's lane.

If so, it's time for the woodshed!

The total cost was very well known by both Reedy and Holt and each of the other commissioners who voted for this incredible waste. If the city borrows less money the county is still obligated for twenty years to not raise their portion of the sales tax without paying the city the part they would lose. The city can't lose and the county can't win.

How can something like this happen? Was the AMOUNT ever mentioned in the council meeting? EVERYONE in the county will pay for it and EVERYONE will lose, lose, and more lose. $6 million is 60 times more than I thought they were talking about!!
