Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. The Giles County Budget Committee plans to seek, at least (it started out being less than a million and grew as different offices got a smell of new money), a two million dollar loan, to cover expense shortfalls in the current budget. What are your thoughts about this loan, as presented on Wednesday morning 28 Nov. , that will cost over $265.000 dollars in interest and between 15 to 20 thousand more in broker fees? Would it not be better to just stop spending so much money instead of trying to borrow the county out of debt? Oh, this loan did not have any money for water included in it so the amount may be going up. Can anyone hear the words "TAX INCREASE" forming in the near future? Allen Barrett

I think we have a gaggle of people in county government who never think along the lines of "spend less". They only know how to find more funds, be it from taxpayers or loans. You know, I work at a factory here in town, when we come upon hard times financially, we spend less, buy only what is needed, and cut out any unnecessary expenses until things get better. I have witnessed lots of county employees that quite frankly, don't do very much. It is my opinion that a lot of county employees could be consolidated and we would still be able to get the same amount of work done with less workforce. As with a lot of businesses, there are usually only a select few that do actual work, and others do little or nothing.

Borrowing money to increase expenses is a sure way to go broke. Whose idea is it? If not outright illegal, it sure should be!

The County Executive, Janet Vanzant, came up with it. Wants to "repay" the county for the cost of the Sun Trust bank building which is already paid for!

Borrowing or using savings to pay for expenses is a lose / lose situation. It appears to be no emergency, just the compulsion to spend more money! If it's 2 million this year, it'll be 2.2 plus 2 more in the hole next year. You'll never dig yourself out of that hole - ever!

If you havent, you're just waiting to be nailed to the floor while they empty your pockets .

Snodley - The pen is mightier than the sword & this blog is about the only place in GC where the word can be spread. It isn't whining, it's passing the news & thought.

What you write is proof positive - - some will be offended by the "whining" word enough to do exactly what you said! If they do, something good might happen! calling does get things done!

PS - need to thank the commissioners who are doing the right thing, while calling. They like everyone else catch a lot of BS for now throwing money away!
