High School Consolidation????

There is a buzz beginning to develop that some movers and shakers in the school system have determined that there should only be one high school in Giles County. The rumor is that it will be discussed at the next school board meeting. I hope this is just a rumor but I was asked to post it for discussion and so here it is.

Well sure why don't we gather all the kids up in a one room school house and teach'em up like the old days. I am honestly amazed how some people on the school board have enough sense to put on the pants in the morning.

And can you believe the people involved in this little game are some of the people involved in trying to get the financial management act removed from the county. Now we know why - at least one reason.

This just can't be true. They just built a school at Richland. What do they think Giles County has an oil well on every farm.

In a few years when diesel hits $10 a gallon (DONT LAUGH ..look at Japan and Europe ) these same idiots will want to have 10 high schools in the county so kids can walk , like they did 100 yrs ago .
Residents/taxpayers wont be able to afford taxes enough to fill fuel tanks on all those yellow tanks that haul kids to school today .But guess who'll want to have a new fleet of buses by then , bought without bids to a specification that suits only one manufacturer .
I guess anonymous 6-47 above was right about why we need to keep Financial management next tuesday just to keep an eye on these games .

Is someone starting this rumor just to get people riled. If so it seems to be working. You should not put rumors on here. There is enough controversy without starting unsubstantiated rumors.

This is just a rumor but even so the board can do what it thinks best regardless of Finanacial Mangement. THAT WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING!!!

And for spanky, why don't you run for school board?

Rumor or no rumor, for heaven's sake, GCHS is so crowded now its hard for the kids to get to class on time especially when they have a class in the gym and have to get to the vocational building. Some would say they can walk outside and thats fine when its not raing or freezing cold. There is nothing wrong with having two high schools. That would end the cross town rival.

That just goes to show how ridiculous this subject is. GCHS is at full capacity, there is no way that they can combine the two schools at either location. The powers that be on this blog should not make rumors as subjects. That is the problem with half of these subjects. Rumors not truth. If you have not seen it yourself, or talked to the people involved don't say things you don't know.

If another high school is built it should be located in the South end.

Dont think this is just rumor since a elected official was talking about it. We shall see.

For a moment consider if Richland was turned into a middle school and an addition was built at GCHS every student would be able to take any subject offered. Now the driving thing seems to be that GCHS by drawing form the whole county would be able to become competitive in both basketball and football and after all what else is there in our school system. This is not just a rumor I have been involved in some of the discussions. The key is if the tax increase is passed to remodel Sam Davis and the financial office is taken out. Get ready it's going to happen.

Well, here we go again about building a school in the south end of the county. We can't find enough teachers to fill the ones we already have. Richland, at this very minute, is looking for several teachers to work there. GCHS is losing more and more teachers to retirement, thus, finding it hare to replace those who are leaving. You may not realize it but, students at Richland are having to come to GCHS to take classes they need.

I get so put out with people in the community who think they know everything about the schools and school system. You can blame who you want (and we know who you will blame)but, running a school system and having it equipped with enough personnel, books and supplies takes a great deal of money. Try to buy a bus, 250 lockers, replacing a gym floor or adding classrooms to an already old building. It cost more than you think. I guess none of you have added onto a house or bought a new car lately. They were giving them away free - right! Yeah right.

It's like anything else. Until you have walked in the shoes of teachers, administrators, aids, and bus drivers, quit giving them a hard time.

For those of you who want something better, who will you find who wants to put up with all the crap shoved at them on a constant basis by so many of you.

I guess I had better stop. I am getting on my soap box.

I fully agree with you. And the problem with teachers getting out of the profession has much deeper roots than the things you mentioned.
A big factor in the loss of teachers, especially to retirement, is the lack of respect among the students. They come to school with attitudes, and teachers are expected to teach those who will listen in spite of the troublemakers. Anyone in the teaching profession knows that to be true. And the reasons for the disrespect derives from a number of reasons. In my opinion, the bigest problem stems from homes these kids come out of. They hear their parents sit around and bad-mouth teachers and other adults in the community. Is it any wonder they come to school with this mind set? They see teachers as the enemy. I have heard teachers make that very statement. And I know that so many of our teachers are just trying to put up with it and survive until they can retire. It's almost as if they see the situation as one who is arranging chairs on the Titanic.

the GC school system increased spending by 25% in the last 3 years - 3 times what everyone else got in the nation - The BLS rate was something over 8% for that period.

The money went for more bureaucracy - more people tripping over teachers who want to teach!

Teachers are not respected because bureaucracy will not let them do their job. They can't discipline anyone. They have to follow the yellow brick road of liberalised political correctness in all respects.

If you can't determine and carry out the discipline, you will never have order and respect - that's a fact! all the stupid paperwork does nothing but hinder the process and create a noose around the kids neck for the rest of their life.

Let the teacher teach and control the classroom. Dump the bureaucrats and use the money for teacher pay and decent facillities!

go over to Ethridge and see how its done- kids knee high to a grasshopper can read, add, & not afraid to WORK! Some of ours can't even find their way home!

Why can't Richland hire more teachers?
Is it because of the pay in Giles County, no one wants to come here?

It looks like it would be cheaper to hire more teachers, than build a new larger building, since Richland just got a new building.
Is Richland already over crowed?

Its confusing to read Giles Co needs teachers and cant get them, yet we know of two teachers wanting jobs locally, extremely well qualified, have talked with T Jackson and Debbie Braden, yet not hired. You tell me.....

The teachers needed are high school Math, English, Science, languages and special ed. If they are those jobs I hope they apply again. If you know anyone going into teaching tell them no Elementary, there are thousands of those looking for those jobs.

There has been a flood of money - more than enough to pay teachers - It doesn't happen because the money is going to bureaucracy - hiring more people - especially administrative types - no one can do their job right for tripping over helpers and administrators & specialists for everything except learning.

Where does the money go in the school system. One question to ask is how much did it cost in time and materials to create print and distribute the letter on Giles County High School stationary, signed by the principal and distributed to every student at the school asking for people to vote for the tax increase to remodel Sam Davis Park? While this may not have been a great expense, it was an expense, was it appropriate? Allen Barrett

The TAxpaying voters have spoken !!
Financial Management stays .
Dan Speers glorification tax goes .
The proposal for a new high school needs to 'go with Dan' floatin down Richland Sewer .
Time for Giles County to concentrate on those politicians and department heads who have a 'hire my relatives and friends' approach to government. Nepotism is alive and well in Giles County .

Maybe the next petition for a referendum should require them to publish a list of relatives working for local government and schools ? It'd be an AMAZING list ...

You aren't being facetious anonymous 5:05. You are just plain ignorant!! Why don't you say something else I can pick apart. No one has to move anywhere. This county belongs to us all. However, the citizens are not going to be bullied anymore. There is room for everyone to live happily here in this beautiful county. Although, the "liars" may find it a bit uncomfortable now that their rear-ends are exposed.

Anonymous,
Yes, I was being pretty facetious there when I made the statement that these people (whiners) are they who would turn the world upside-down. They aren't happy with anything here.
Anything I say, you try to pick apart anyhow, so why does it matter? There's always somethi9ng sinister, always someone telling a lie (other than you guys), and always someone bullying others around. Do you not trust anyone?
Lastly, the only rears I see being exposed are those who make fools of themselves in a public way.
By the way, I voted for the Act. Does that make me less ignorant and dishonest...in your eyes?

10:40 you are showing your rear end. You are talking to people like that not even knowing how they voted. I would like to ask a question. The vote last year had how many voters. I don't think that many. This was a better representation of the population. If you don't like the elected officials that were vocal against FM then fine don't vote for them, but to ask them resign is ridiculous. The votes for them is all that needs to talk.

Well, if you are proposing my thinking is that only the ones that were against the act are the only liars and ignorant people then you are crazy! However, they are the ones that are being questioned right now.
People are not happy in this county when fair representation is not in place. As they doggone should be!!
To be quite honest with you I don't trust very many people. I live by that motto. I am very careful of who I trust and go to the head of the stream to get the coolest drink of water so to speak when I seek the truth and so should you.
Those publicly exposed rears you speak of are the liars I speak of.
Glad to see you voted for the act. The fact of whether you are ignorant or not is still debatable.

Anonymous 5:29 You said you had a question you wanted to ask? I'm waiting.
Resignation is a very legitimate request considering their actions. I didn't vote for them in the last election because they are not in my district. THANK GOD!!!

Calling for the resignation of elected officials...in this case...is totally ridiculous. But some people would grip if they were to be hanged with a new rope..or vice-versa.
Please don't question my intelligence. Look to thyself first. I don't worry about it and could care less what you think. I just wish you would calm down before you have a stroke.
We are all just trying to do the best we can and everyone who disagrees with your point of view is not a crook and a liar. Ask yourself this question. Who was it whop started up all this mess in the first place. I think we ALL know who he is. He is so full of himself and, for whatever reason, distrusts practically everyone. He is truly the Johnny Applesed of sowing content and strife and looks like you have bought into it big time.
If you aren't happy, support candidates of your choosing next election and work to get them in. Wouldn't that be better than running around with your hair on fire accusing everyone of fraud and corruption?

Anonymous 7:59 How do you see asking for their resignations is ridiculous? Isn't lying to the general public a tad more than ridiculous?
I didn't know I had questioned your intelligence? You don't appear to be that intelligent if you want my opinion.
Thank you also for being so concerned about my health. I have never seen so many concerned posters about my well-being, yet so little concern for the general public of who have been so deceived.
You said,"We are all just trying to do the best we can and everyone who disagrees with your point of view is not a crook and a liar. Ask yourself this question. When did I say you or anyone else is a crook or liar that has disagreed with me. Another indication of how intelligent you are. Not!! I never have made they statement that if your views disagree with mine you are any such thing as a liar and a crook. You can disagree with me all you want to. Again, my stance is based off of the truth of the matter and it is too bad you can not see that.
Who are you suggested started "all this mess"? I can tell you exactly how this got started. When the liars took a public stand to munipulate, misinform and greatly mislead the general public it became open for criticism by all citizens. People do think on their own. People do gather their own information by fact finding and asking questions and not by following as some choose to do. I would never put my name in the hat to support or not support an issue without being well-informed. Go to the head of the stream to get your information and you will see that the water is much cooler there. You CANNOT dispute facts!
You also stated, "If you aren't happy, support candidates of your choosing next election and work to get them in. Wouldn't that be better than running around with your hair on fire accusing everyone of fraud and corruption?
Thank you for your tip on how to choose my candidate and vote in the future. How would I have ever known what to do without you advising me?? I don't have to prove anything to anyone regarding candidates, those in question have proven publicly they are not trustworthy.

Not a member of any group. Actually, I don't even know the ones who post here. There are many like me who are concerned with the direction our county is traveling. Check the counter. Lots of hits.
Now, back to the topic in which all should stick to.
(1) Would one high school costs less than two?
(2) Would one high school create higher academics standards?
(3) Would one high school help in time to solve the civil war between the countries of North Giles & South Giles?
(4) With no new jobs being created for the "young couples with children" group, do you foresee the number of students declining in Giles County therefore by itself eliminating the need for two high schools?

Water under the bridge is water under the bridge. We as a county need to QUIT complaining about the past and start planning toward the future.

Mike has learned to not be a yes man but vote with his heart and head. Thank goodness for that.
