Pulaski Electric System Public Meeting

The public meeting to discuss the Pulaski Electric System was held last night at the City Hall? It started at 6:30PM and lasted until 10:00PM.
After much filibustering by the Electric System speakers, over an hour was used before the first questions were able to be asked, the meeting got down to business.
I greatly appreciate the City Council forcing this meeting and for the agenda that allowed the people to express their questions. I appreciate the Mayor and his attempts to move the meeting along while giving each speaker a respectful greeting and opportunity to speak. I appreciate Mr. Holcomb, who was in a very uncomfortable position most of the night, making such a strong effort to answer each question. I appreciate the huge number of citizens who were in attendance, standing room only, and asked some incredibly good and appropriate questions while maintaining a decorum of civility. People who feel they are being given a fair shake usually do act respectful and orderly.

Here is your opportunity to discuss the meeting last night.

There will be an Electric Power Board Meeting on 23 July at 5:30 PM in City Hall to continue this question and answer opportunity. What began last night must continue with a huge crowd of citizens if we are going to make a difference in our future and the future of our children. People who faced the crowd and asked their questions last night should feel very proud of themselves for standing up and firmly declaring
this is our lives and we are going to take responsibility for what happens to us.

I predict that nothing good will come of this haranguing. You think that the best thing for this community is to "throw the bums out"?

If that happens, then I wonder what "progressive" individuals we'll get in office next? I'm sure they'll be as thought provoking and forward thinking as our wonderful county commissioners.

I am going to word this very carefully so that no person can get offended, upset, or go off kilter. I have been reading this blog for about 6 months now, and I have noticed several things. First, there is always a topic for each thread. Second, someone always comes in and has something negative to say without being truly specific. Third, when this happens, it changes the informative slant of the thread into a person bashing thread. Finally, I think this is what is desired by those who constantly try to redirect the thread. I am not going to dignify the broohaha that is going to follow my comments by answering them. I konw that I will be called a cheerleader, arrogant, egotistical, and several other things. I will say this, and then get back to the thread. I am arrogant, egotistical, and I think I am smarter than some people, however there are many people smarter than I. I do however look stupid in a cheerleader outfit. Thanks. Now, back to the thread. Mr. Barrett, do these meetings apply only to the city or are they for county residents also? How are these changes going to affect us in the county?

Is the grid thing about power surges? If so, there is tons of $ that be made by any sizable business that uses a lot of energy.

Or, is it a gore/bama plot to impoverish the nation - draw a number to know which day & time of day or night you can take a shower.

deadman,
You made a comment about those who are involved in cheerleading on this blog. Well, what else would you call it when there are those who would defend mean-spirited and nasty behavior, regardless of who it hurts? Calling people names and accusing Giles Countians of being mentally lazy, ignorant, enablers of wrong, lacking in knowledge, anal buffoons, and on and on provoke negative responses to threads that are themselves usually negative. You see, it's as simple as that.
You mentioned that the slant of the topic of a thread is often changed. That's because anytime someone disagres with the very vocal minority on this blog they are talked to as if they were third graders. They are belittled and called a variety of names. Can you see any arrogance and egotism in that? By the way, I would agree that you do seem a bit arrogant and egotistical yourself.
You know, someone made a statement on another thread that brings it all down to the bottom line. In essence, it said that we need to lay aside the differences among us and all work together for the betterment of Giles County. However, I don't see that happening as long as people come across as "smarter than everybody else" and unwilling to concede that there are people right here in this county who are just as smart as they think they are. And that, my friend, is a sad reality.
But I will tell you this. Most people who are truly crucified (figuratively) on this blog refuse to read it. I know, because I've talked to several of them.
So this is what I truly believe the situation is in Giles County.

Aymett Garner is just mad because he can't use city employees and city vehicles to work on his family farm in Garner Hollow since he isn't mayor anymore.

Has everyone forgot that Aymett left office under less than respectable terms because of misuse of his power.

Look back and see what the District Attorney proved that Aymett did during his "administration".

I do not like Dan Speer and agree with alot that I heard Aymett Garner say...but opponents of Speer definitely need a spokesperson with more morales and respectability than Aymett speaking for them!!!

Aymett came across as a angry old man with a jealous streak for Speer.

This would be comical if it wasn't so ridiculous!!

This grid is going to turn off your heat or air unit when it deems that you don't need it. Same for your hot water heater. There will be more expensive times of day to operate your washer and dryer. This is BIG BROTHER. Anyone else remember Orwell's 1984? People work all shifts and live on all types of schedules, many of which change at a moment's notice. Are you going to have to call PES and tell them to please turn your air conditioner back on today since you are unexpectedly home with a sick child? We definitely do not need to let other people have any more control over over lives. When I use the power, I pay the bill. Period.

9:42 That may be the overall intention of TVA and PES, but you have the option not to have the relay switches and inside device that will tell you what rate's apply for that time of day. That means they may install a smart meter on the outside of your home but you have to sign up for the option for them to cut off your a/c , water heater, etc...(Now they may make this a requirement in the future, but who knows what will happen.)

I agree that the distributors and the TVA shouldn't tell us when and how to use our power, we pay for the service so we should be able to use it as we see fit. I believe the main goal of this, is to make people aware of their power consumption, and to not waste power, especially on peak days. TVA's concern is a legitimate one, the TVA guy at the meeting had a great explanation about TVA's concerns.

I have a couple of questions that I may need to ask at the next Electric Board meeting. This blog may have some input to these questions.

How much does ENERGIZE charge Pulaski Electric for the use of the fiber optic network for each smart meter each month?

How does that figure compare to meter readers reading the meters right now?

If this smart grid technology wasn't put into place already, would ENERGIZE be ahead of its 9 year projection of losses?(PES has payed ENERGIZE something to the tune of 550,000[rough figure] for the use of it's fiber optic network for the year)

What makes TVA & distributors think that they can do better with helping me on my consumption problems?( Maybe I am already taking steps to help with my electric/gas bills?)

Your thoughts?

Mr. Garner DID NOT come over as an angry old man. He voiced what the majority in the audiance wanted to say but didn't know how. OK, if Garner did something wrong a few years ago, look at what Speer did about the plumbing on his building. Then again, let's take some of our county commissioners. They are lining their own pockets in various ways - for instance I hear former highway superintendent Pete Britton's granddaughter is working for Barry Hyatt and the job wasn't andvertised and where did he get the money if the department is on such a tight budget?

If the goal is to help people cut unnecessary consumption, an education campaign would be much less expensive than $7 million. Perhaps they could offer incentives locally for installation of energy efficient windows, insulation, programmable thermostats, etc. I personally have done all these things at my house. Simple changes such as changing the thermostat a few degrees when you leave home for the day are also easy and I think most folks around here are intelligent enough to understand them. You could infer by the action of those at PES that they don't believe Giles Countians are capable of understanding these things.

10:58 AM:

I agree totally with what you said about a part-time employee being hired in Barry Hyatt's office. Why would Julie Phillips need help when all of the accounting is being done in Loretta Garner's office.

This was probably done for Buster Wallace who is the father of Pete's granddaughter. Buster is a foreman for the highway department.
Can you say nepotism?

Barry is notarious for hiring family and friends. That is the reason Julie Phillips is still at the highway department and not in the accounting office at the courthouse which is what the accounting act states. He has always protected her because she didn't want to leave her gravy train of a job.

Barry also has nephews working a highway department.

Remember all this waster at election time!!! And contact your commisioners and tell them how you feel. They are the people who fund Barry's budget with your tax dollars!

Hey did anybody else notice that the Mayor had himself surrounded by police officers? There was only one officer out in the big crowd. And there were three guarding the entrances to the throne he built for the council to sit on.

It's not the mark of the beast or the Wizard of Oz. It's just good common sense in view of the way people are so divided anymore in this county. I can't blame Dan Speer one bit. And then you have to make fun of Jerry Bryant (a very nice Christian person) as well? Unbelievable!

441 - You are the only one on target!

We were supposed to be the leaders in nuclear power. All other nations with a brain either have it or are getting it, including North Korea & Iran! Obama & the liberals refuse to allow it in the US. We have an endless supply of coal & know all about clean burning, but Obama said he will put them out of business. Obama & the liberals hate oil & refuse to allow drilling; thus we must rely on nations who hate us, for oil! Windmills are pipe dreams that will cover the earth with migrating bird feathers from birds that are otherwise protected. Solar is expensive & doesn't work on cold cloudy days when needed to keep from freezing. According to Obama & the liberals, there isn't enough natural resources to provide and sustain our needs, so he will legalize 30 million illegal foreigners, make them citizens, and force Americans to do without so the illegal’s can use our energy, so the illegal’s can vote for Obama & the liberal nuts.

The game isn't about supplying energy and power. It's about taking power away from the people! Of course, you can't take power away and still allow free economic choice & free movement. As we move back into the 1900' & 1800's era, things will be easier - no congested roads, no big steaks & a night out, etc., because there will be none. Home will be a little green cottage replica of a 1950's Styrofoam beer cooler - plastic coated if you are important or plain if you're plain. Heating & cooling will use the gas you pass, so you might want to invest in beer & beans. Health care will consist of counseling sessions to see if are a candidate for the hospital or hospice (read the current bill).

If you didn't notice, all children are equal whether they can or can't read, and all jobs requiring anything more than scanning a barcode tag & credit card were moved outside this country. Everyone will have a cell phone & EBT card in case they get lost on the way to WALMART.

Back to smart grid - If we can just get everyone to bathe when told, to take off the insulated underwear for 14 minutes in the winter, and learn to walk instead of ride, everything will be OK.

Instead of paying some not to bathe or rewarding those who get up a 3AM to bathe, the new grid program will simply lock everything in place with a time machine instead of the old twirling meter. They'll punish everyone who has a rational routine with extreme electric bills!

Some might say the term smart grid should really be "gridlock". A few people will make a ton of money selling this crap, while the entire nation drowns in its own tears.

Will it be like the Tower of Babble, the captivity, Sodom & Gomorra, or is it a Nigerian Emperor? In case no one noticed, the US industrial might has been sacked since the early 1990's - equipment, technology, trained workers, etc. - now gone.

We don't need smart grid! We need God & country! We need leaders who can recognize sedition & treason & have the guts to act. I really think 441 has the situation sized up. Isn’t it time to get right with God & let everything go to the hell that they created? It may be too late. It may even be prophesy?? Some will make a ton of money selling this crap while the entire nation drowns in tears.

Why don't we start with our oh so honest(sarcasm)county executive and the endless friends and culprits she employees with through her office and the finance office for which she runs NOT Loretta Garner. Go figure!!! We need to have a public meeting with our county officials and put Vanzant center stage and have her answer the question of where she lives. Also, explain why so much money goes to help line the pockets of certain individuals in this county by way of rigged bids and unethical practices. Would love to see her squirm in her seat. This county and city has been a cash cow for some for way too long and the citizens have wised up. Thankfully!! Enough folks have caught on and it has prompted many questions. What has Reedy done wrong? Common sense of Pollard and Adams. Both nice people I suppose but, to suggest they have common sense is taking a bit too far. What have each done for this county? Just because Pollard would like to decrease our taxes does not make him a hero. I know many commissioners would like to do that. The question is and always has been since this issue arose was show where we can cut it in the budget. Pollard has been unable to do that. He just wanted the tax decrease with no plan as to go about it. That doesn't sound to intelligent to me. Anybody can be a hero to say they want to cut taxes. However a real hero would be able to show how to do it without making the citizens suffer. We don't need to cut public safety if that is what people think. Again, try looking into the budget and asking what the "other" line item is and request that it be revealed bit by bit what the "other" is funding.

Looking closely at the line item "Other" is a very good Start. Its something a couple of commissioners have asked about in the past, not received a clear answer and just accepted it. Time to change.
How about folks posting on this blog other items they see in the county budget that could be cut of padding/fat? Your chance to be outspoken. Will get to the budget committee as we know some commissioners read this blog. Share your ideas. They are needed.

Holcomb was asked in public meeting if he had UNDERGROUND fiber optics to his house and he said YES. Then asked if he paid for it, the answer was YES. I have snce heard he only paid for it the afternoon of the public hearing as he knew the question was being asked. Needs looking into.

I was very impressed by the response of Mr Holcomb, Mr Kelley, Mr Bryant and even Mayor Speer to the open meetings and their willingness to receive and respond to the tough questions that were asked.
One thing I did notice was the very careful way in which they responded to the very specific words in those questions.
So the question "was there any money spent on the pole yard without the approval of the Power Board" the answer was "NO". When the question was asked using different words "was work done at the pole yard that obligated the Electric Company to a financial expenditure without Power Board approval" the answer became "Yes". Mr. Barrett,
Well, what would you expect them to do? They knew that people like you were there dissecting every word that came out of their mouths. Just because they were cautious does not mean they were trying to hide something. As a preacher, I would think that you would look on the good side of man rather than the bad. Don't be a sinister minister.

7:04. What a fruitcake. It was not Barrett spinning words it was Holcomb, Speer and Hoover. You know give half answers or avoid answers. Folks sitting around me knew game was trying to get out of giving direct answers. Slick little tricksters. They think. Why couldn't they just answer the questions. What was there to hide. What were they so concerned about coming out.

I stand by what I said. And you have to call me a name. I'm not surprised. Someone always has something to hide, according to "those people".

Seems to me that you were the first to call someone a name. That is usually exactly what happens everytime with you. I do belive you called Mr. Barrett a sinister minister, but thats okay according to your standards.

7:04 Why is it uncaring folks always beat good people over the head with the Bible or religion. "Sinister minister"....if you read the Bible, you will learn that Jesus questioned wrong doing, very carefully, and spoke to it publicly. If all you can do is 'stick' pins in your sinister minister voodo doll, my suggestion you pray to the good Lord and ask forgiveness for your evil ways.

Wrong again! I admit to calling him the sinister minister, because, according to my "standards", that's exactly what he is. There's always something sinister and corrupt going on, according to his standards.
No, I have never called him a liar, crook, anal buffoon, idiot, or any other of several names I've seen him and "those people" call others who might question or disagree.
You mention uncaring folks beating good people over the head with the Bible. Horsehockey! Again, the kettle calls the pot black. Do you imply that "those people" are the good ones and those like me are bad? That's what you said. Wrong again.
Guess what? The Bible is actually my standard". I know that sounds dogmatic and antiquated, but It remains the measuring stick. And with the mistakes I make all too often, I need one.

12:12 It has become an overwhelming opinion held by everyone on this blog that 7:07 is held to a complete different They can call names and then turn around and say "I was merely describing behavior". Double standards. I find it humorous that 7:07 is intellectually incompetent(describing behavior)to see the hypocrisy in their comments. Why don't we call 7:07 the "Cheerleader for Bad Behavior and Unaccountability". I am sure the ones in question are so tickled to have this person in their corner cheering them on!! Laughable indeed.

Well, until I can think of a better example (analogy) to describe behavior (a concept coined by wab), then I'm afraid you will just have to live with it.

8:27 I am 12:12. I DID NOT say you or anyone else were 'bad' ppl. I said "Why is it uncaring folks always beat good ppl over the head with the Bible or religion"......you equated 'uncaring' with 'bad'....must be YOUR opinion.

The names you mention that WAB has used to describe some folks on this blog are TRUE. Take a few minutes and look them up in the dictionary. You just might be enlightened. The Bible says if someone is taking a wrong path, we should help them see the error of their ways. If the 'names' WAB has used to describe some folks on this blog are accurate, then all is well.

Well excuse me, but I just have a difficult time with a preacher being out in the community calling people names. How convenient to call it describing behavior. That same standard would also apply to me, you, or anyone else professing Christianity.

Read your bible 9:48. That is what is being asked of you. Jesus walked with the sinners but had no qualms of recognizing them for who they were. Some people apply their religion and Christianity at times it is useful in their arguments against others. If one is going to quote scripture, you need to be able to apply that same scripture to your own behavior. As described in the bible, we are not to add or take away from God's word to suit our lifestyle. Unfortunately, that is exactly what people do. Condemning others actions or behavior by using scripture, while not applying that same scripture to yourself is being a hypocrite. The bible talks often about hypocrisy. No one was offended when God said it. We are all sinners. Are you also offended by that?

You are right! I condemn misbehavior just like Christ condemned sinners. What's wrong with that? We are all sinners, but isn't badmouthing others sinful as well? Why is it wrong for me to point out the hypocrisy I see?

Christ did not condemn the sinners, HE condemned the sin! HUGE difference. The sin itself condemned the sinner if repentance did not occur before death.

Why is it wrong for others to point out the wrongdoing? We are not talking about everyday citizens here you seem to forget. We are talking about persons who run our city and county government. Please give me a suggestion as to how to inform the public of wrongdoing without hurting your friends feelings? You are very misguided in your perception of how Christ would want us all to act. Do you think he favors your attitude right now? Putting your self high on the mountain yet looking down on others and judging their actions? You are not different than the rest of us except for the fact that you just don't get it. Hypocrisy running rampant with you.

Ok, I think you are trying to engage in semantics here. Christ did condemn sinners or those who disobeyed. What happened to Uzza when he touched the Ark of the Covenant? God struck him dead for his diobedience. I think you understood the point I was trying to make. You knew that I meant Christ condemned sinners' behavior. Uh...I believe Christ also taught that we should pray for our enemies or those who despitefully use us. And I can almost bet that you will rebut that statement by accusing me of thinking people ought to just sit idly by and allow the powers that be to run all over them. Not!
You want to accuse me of being self-righteous and pompous, but....that dog don't hunt either!

Uh, 6:50 slight over reaction there...have no idea what you are talking about, and I don't consider it semantics; one statement judges a person, the other a behavior. Who are you to tell me what I understood
or knew you meant...

For goodness sakes, why do you want to split hair over what I inteneded to communicate. You judge me by arguing over what I meant. I know that Christ hates the sin but loves the sinner. That was NOT my message! You really need to take a long vacation and see your therapist!

Words have meaning 6:26 and communication results from the words you use. The more clarifying the words used the greater understanding that is reached. What you intended and what you said are very different.
It's like the head of a firing squad who has the target standing before him. He call ready, aim then notices that the building across the street is on fire so he yells out the warning "Fire". What do you think the firing squad members did? Should the target of the squad accept the apology "I didn't mean fire I meant fire?
If you want people to understand what you mean you should simply say what that is an not rely on people knowing what you meant. Seems a number of times this has happened with you. Allen Barrett

I explained what I meant in the above post. So is there really any need of your trying to labor the point? I fully understand what the Bible teaches about God's hating the sin but loving the sinner. And I certainly don't need you of all people to interpret scripture for me. Thanks anyway.
Yep, words have meaning as you love to say. And your example of the firing squad was clever. But, and I hate to remind you of this, if words have meaning, then what do you think of the profanities that are quite often popping up on this blog? Seem that has happened a number of times with this blog. Oh yes, those words have meaning too wouldn't you think? And isn't it interesting that not a single profane word has been uttered by anyone whose thinking is not aligned with that of "those people"? Don't you find that a little odd?
