The Chamber Of Commerce with it's president Mr. Wes Kelley, (PES executive), and a director with a salary of $56,000.00 seems out of line with the benefits the county receives in return. The Chamber is controlled by the mayor and his appointments and until recently were double dipping into county funds by taking a contribution from the county then charging the tourism Board, (all the money the county was giving to Tourism), for rent.

9:27 Less than 5 years ago I was on the Tourism Board for 3 years. NOTHING was done or approved by Tourism or the Chamber WITHOUT 'checking' with the almighty mayor. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT! The 'director' of Tourism, at that time - who works at the Co-op now, constantly told the Toursim board 'I will have to check with Dan first.' 'Dan won't like it and he won't give Tourism any money.' ETC,! I was in the Tourism office/Chamber office ALOT during my time on the Toursim Board. The Chamber director didn't make a move with out kissing 'Dan's' "a$$ Dude". At that time, the Chamber was working HARD to try to take over the Tourism Board; wanting to do away with the Tourism Board. It is my belief 'funds' were kept low on purpose to cause Tourism to cave. However, it hasn't! It would be my guess Tourism has brought more tax $$ to Giles County over the past few years than the Director of Economic Development. Dude, don't take my word, check out the public statistics.
No body said the mayor appointed anyone to the Chamber only that he controlled the Chamber and no one became the director or the chairman without his approval. Don't believe me go to a Chamber meeting ask the other Chamber members and those in tourism.
I have heard the same thing from a member. If I had to venture a guess, I would say what these people are saying is true. I don't know this person to lie. One of the reasons people don't want to be involved is because Speer (aka the little man) has a need to control everything.

7/30 12:03 I agree whole-heartedly with you. I took have had the unfortunate displeasure of working under the tyrannt Dan Speer and it is very true. Everything has to have his blessing. That includes what you can say and to whom you can say it to. Thats how he is able to keep all his underhanded misdealings such a secret. Those who know about his illegal activities will suffer more than anyone could possibly know if they expose him and the things he is doing. And yes, he will find out who you are and take out his revenge.
Lets not forget about all his extra marrital affairs. Hes been caught more than once with someone other than his wife. Hes also broken up a marriage or two.

I just wanted to ask you why you allow the foul language that permeates this blog, and particularly on this thread? And people are permitted to call others adulterers, knowing full well that it hurts innocent members of families and sometimes even an innocent victim of such accusations. Just because I may KNOW someone who is involved in adultery wouldn't give me the right to start going around telling everybody. You of all people should know better. And, the irony of it all is that you have the ability to remove unsavory posts....and you don't do it! I suppose it's acceptable since it's "journalism", right? Shame on you.

I have stated before, that words considered by an average person to be profanity will cause the entire post to be deleted. I have done this, not quickly enough at times but as soon as it has come to my attention.
Deleting profanity is as far as I can go and still maintain the free speech rights I endorse. I understand there are some posts that are personally objectionable to you, some are personally objectionable to me as well but would you be satisfied if I deleted the posts I found personally objectionable? Would you think this a free speech zone if I deleted all your posts? I'm sorry, too much sacrifice has been made in order for this freedom to be maintained and I will not be the one who betrays that sacrifice by using censorship to only provide certain points of view.

Please, please, please..you are smarter that, aren't you? When I said "censorship anyone", it was meant much like the waiter would say "refills anyone." No, I am totally against censorship. Perhaps I was a bit off base when I said that censorship would only apply to those who said something profane in the text of a post that was not aligned with the mainstream thinking of this forum. I am big enough to apologize for that speculation.

How do you stop nasty words if you censor the blog? You and I both know what I am referring to, so I'll not list those examples again. There are polite and respectful ways to get points across without making vulgar statements.
You never did answer my question about church. Would you allow someone in your congregation to tell someone else to "shut the **** up if the speaker said something he or she didn't like? This may seem like an exercise in splitting hair to you, but I honestly would like to know.

You ask, "How do you stop nasty words if you censor the blog?" At first I thought you meant "if I don't censure the blog" but having already answered that question I'll try to answer as you ask. I do censor the blog in the sense that I delete profanity as soon as I see it. I can not read every post as soon as it is posted and they are not filtered through me prior to being posted. To have them filtered would cause huge delays and frustration from the posters. I have chosen to trust the posters to use their judgment and consideration when posting and for the most part they have.
The things that you seem to object to other than my mere existence are some posts that were typed using a letter and symbols. This has been a long used method of conveying such thoughts and expressions as anger, frustration and even words considered inappropriate for public use. Newspapers and political cartoons have used these signs for well over a hundred years. What the word may be is left entirely to the imagination of the reader.
As for there being other more polite ways to get points across without making vulgar statements, I agree and that is why you haven't seen me use such language.

Perhaps you could tell me how I or you could prevent someone anywhere even in church from saying something filled with profanity? Would you suggest putting a gag on everyone with the potential of cussing, that would seem to cover everyone. The reality is that no one can prevent another person from saying what they choose.
Now if you were to ask what my reaction would be to such a thing I would say "the same as if I were at the barber shop, in Wal Mart or at Burger King" a gentle reminder of the unacceptable action then if continued a stronger rebuke and condemnation would be forthcoming. Also as Carolyn has posted frequently, I too wonder why you have not directed a single objection to the language that offends you to the one who actually posted the remarks. It does seem that that would be the most appropriate thing to do if the offensive language was what was truly bothering you. I heard Dan was going to resign today. We could only get so lucky!! As far as Lying Janet, we are way overdue for her lying hiney to go!! Who has she not lied to?? I don't know anyone that she has not lied to. I mean no one! Even those that have supported her in the past, have had a change of heart. Why you ask??? Because she lied to them! The only thing she can do effectively is LIE!!!!
Speaking of lying, has anyone noticed a certain someone has said twice they wasn't going to get on this blog, but they do.

Dan is like that Blagojevich feller. He will never resign. He never thinks he does any wrong.
I agree with Aug 11-6:33... Dan is arrogant. Why? Nobody runs against him and Dan truly believes that he is invincible as a politician. Is he dumb? No way! He is very smart and extremely cagey in that he knows exactly what to do and when. He knows how to bend and twist the system to meet his agenda.
He truly believes that he has done nothing wrong for if what he does meets what he wants, then it is good. The rules apply to the public; but, not to Dan when he so decides. He is above the huddled masses because he believes that he is greater than everyone else. Why NOT! He has been elected to the position of Mayor for 20 years!!!
Until we have a citizen who is willing to be put through the personal harassment that is required to be elected, has the fortitude to stand up against Dan, and the smarts to create a coalition of citizens who have the best interest of others before their personal agenda …. We will be stuck with DAN.
Why does DAN do what he does???? BECAUSE we allow him to do it!!! We are too busy, or self-centered, to stand up for our rights and the well being of all our citizens. It is easier to ignore the mess and complain, than it is to stand up and voice an opinion and back that opinion with positive action.
I have went through every topic on this blog and counted approximately twenty six negative things said about the Mayor. That equates to twenty six people at best. So, If there is approximately nine thousand people in the city and approximately 22,000 in the county, that means the Mayor is very well respected and supported by most. Dang, I bet that's why he has been Mayor for so long. Reckon?
That is just on the blog. Go out and take a survey or wait until election time rolls around and I bet you there will be more than 26. I believe you should recount the blogs and you will find more than 26. Dan is joke to the city and I hope the voters of Pulaski put him out of office. I wish I could vote for Mayor of Pulaski. You can count me as 27 and I have NO RESPECT for him.

What about the great revelation that was supposed to have taken place? As for the Chamber, the director is making $56,000 a year and is never in the office. I have been in there numerous times and she is never there. I wonder if Wes Kelly knows how little she works. You couldn't get anything done if you wanted to. Wake up Mr. Kelly and stop spending so much money for nothing.
They call the Giles Co. Chamber bt it's really the Pulasi Chamber. Have you ever see the director at an event outside the city limits ? No!!! Does she even live in Giles Co? Shes gotta Go !!!
What is the beef with Stony jackson and tourism? The word at the court house is he doesn't want them to move in and he was the one that made the motion at the committee meeting. What have they ever done to him?
I've heard Stoney Jackson is a Dan Speer man. Anything Dan wants from the county commission he gets the support of Stoney Jackson. I think there have been some problems between the Chamber of Commerce (which I heard Dan controls) and Tourism in the past. So, it makes me think that if Dan tries to control Tourism anyway he can. Getting Stoney to be against anything Tourism wants is one way. Just speculation of course, but makes you wonder. I sure would hate to think I was controlled by that little balding man who suffers from short man syndrome. Shameful!
Well, that is one commissioner I hope district 2 does not re-elect if he is such a yes man. Does anyone know when he is up for re-election? We all need to stand together and vote all the yes men and women out of office.
All county offices are up for re-election next year except for Road Superintendent, Tax Assessor, and Dist. 2, 4 & 6 School Board Members. Let's show them who is boss and vote out those who will not listen to the people. We could be replacing quite a few. Off the bat those that need to go are Bill Holt, Tommy Campbell, Tim Risner, Billy Beets, Ramona Flacy, Terry Harwell, James Harwell, Edwin Lovell, Chan Harris, David Adams and Rose Brown. We just need to cleanse the entire commission and get some new folks to listen to us.
I hope we have some honest and trustworthy people who will run for these offices. We need people who are for the citizens not for the crooks. Let all citizens stand up for the county and get the bad people out of office. It is time Giles County be ran by honest people. I am one that can not handle anymore taxes. It is time for budgets be cut and taxes lower.
I agree with you 1:50 and would say that the majority of households can't afford an increase in their bills and debt. But, it is up to the people to convince some good people to run so we can have a positive change in our local government. We keep complaining but we also keep electing the same idiots over and over.
It sounds like there Seems to be some rift between tourism and the chamber of commerce.
I have heard that Tourism has moved or been moved to the courthouse.
I have also been told that our little big man could not control the T people as well as he controls the CoC.

To 11:58 you hit the truth all over. The Chamber was draining Tourism at every opportunity and basically double dipping into county funds by charging Tourism about 12,000 a year rent for their little space. 12,000 a year just happens to be the amount the county gives to Tourism each year. Now that they are moving into the Courthouse Basement perhaps they will have enough money to do more. Are you aware that the director of Tourism makes just over minimum wage while the director of the Chamber makes $56,000.00. Think salary is a bit out of balance then you would be amazed at what each director actually does for that salary. Allen Barrett

Dan has made the comment that Tourism would not be around in amother year. What's so funny is he may not be either. Go to the poles folks and vote for anyone except him. This is serious. Our county is broke now and we can't stand another four years of the short man.
Tourism maybe a little safer now that they are out of the Chamber of Commerce building and paying almost all if not all of their county alotment out to CoC for renting "their little corner of the building." Thanks to the county for providing tourism some space in the courthouse.
Now they can use their money to help promoted tourism and Giles County in Tennesse and the rest of the country.
But it sounds as if the CoC misses having Tourism in the office---They now have to lock up the office when they need to be out of the office since they no longer have an office sitting service.
