Resolution to Amend School Budget

A vote was taken to amend the school budget for 2009-2010. This was to move money from the General Fund to cover a time lag in receiving Federal Funds. This passed with a vote of 20 for and one abstain.
No one declared the possibility of a conflict of interest as required by state law and Commission rules. The penalty for this violation required by the state is the vote is nullified and must be redone. Allen Barrett

I can remember when people in county government serving as commissioners that were directly involved in items voted on by the commission excused themselves from voting on those items.

It seems that, at least one of the commissioners Brown was directly involved in moving the General Fund money into the Federal Funds money. Since she is director of the Federal Programs. I guess Holt's school would be impacted by this moving of funds also.

What happened to the integrity of polititians not voting for things they want. Do they not see this as a conflict of interest? I think that most of the voting public stil sees this as conflict of interest.

What the public sees as a conflict of interest is a result of thier not knowing enough to understand complicated political matters. Only those who are directly involved can really understand that's why they were elected in the first place.

It is the duty of citizen to get involved. Then when you see an elected official not doing a good job remember it next election and vote for a better candidate.

This is notice to all Tax Paying Citizens of Giles Co:

Any tax payer of the county can bring a law suit against any and all Elected officals' for Conflict of Interest.
This seems like a no-brainer since all the actions and votes of the commission and the county executive are of Public Record.
Simply get a copy of the minutes from Carol Wade (County Court Clerk) of that meeting for court and prosced with the action.
GET RID of them now, No problems with them later.

You are exactly right! I'm glad someone else besides me said it. If you don't like an elected official, use the electoral process to remove them. Whining, name-calling, and making accusations do not work.

We all knew they wouldn't.
Are they the one being talked about?

I don't care how many times they blog, just why say you are leaving and not go?

The last time I checked, we still live in a free country, and this IS a free speech blog. I voice my opinion, and someone like you has to be critical. That's cool. But were it not for those like me, what dialogue would you have here? None.
By the way, even if I were the one who promised to leave, it's really none of your business what I decide to do or not do. Your bone of contention with me is that my thinking isn't in agreement with yours. Get over it.

Don't you think the board would love to toss Jackson out for all that he has done, but everyone that wants him out can't or won't bring forward evidence or proven complaints that will stand up with the DA. Bottom line is the DA would have a big hand in his dismissal and he has been given so much stuff that those giving it to him feels it would get him gone. He has until June 2011 and then he will be gone unless the board makes a drastic change in the 2010 election and if the wrong members are put on the board he could get more years. At this point and time he does not have a four vote yes team and won't get years added by this board. So I wouldn't be to eager to get rid of this bunch just yet.

8:54, I must respectfully disagree. The board has access to and has had ample opportunity to fire their only employee. The DA doesn't even enter into the equation. How many blatant lies, incidences of dereliction of duties, incidences of discrimination, and plain old incompetance have to fall from the sky into any one of the school board's lap constitutes violation of his contract? The board blows lots of smoke to their constituents but the evidence is crystal clear as to where their loyalty is. T.J is safe here for as long as he chooses to be. Don't believe it, ask any of the board members in a group or individually, you will hear the same double talk, excuses, and gobblety-gook that we have heard regardless of who is chairman. We had a glimmer of hope when Ms Murry was chosen chairman which was quickly extinguished by her talking so nice to voters, but when it came time for action, she never bucked the others. But she did make an excellent politician, promised the moon out of both sides of her mouth, delivered nothing but excuses. I almost have more respect for Norman, almost; we all KNEW how she felt about T.J.

The problem is that every one is expecting too much from board members. They can only do so much. If the D.A. has not done anything there must not be anything that can be done. The chair only runs the meeting nothing more. They hold the gavel and the clock.

If the board and people had listened to Barrett & Winkles instead of putting them in jail there would have been no extensions to the T's contract and he would be out of here now.
Once again Barrett is proven right.

3:36 YOU can fool SOME of the people SOME of the time, but YOU CAN'T fool ALL of the people ALL of the time.....bu##sh*%%!!!!!!!
Read the state law. Any kindergardner can 'hold the gavel and clock'!!!!!! Step up to the plate or get the h*@@ OFF the board! To 'justify' IS just a 'LIE'!!!!!! Giles County SHOULD be tired of the 'gobblety-gook' or CRAP by now!!! Just a bunch of people who like to complain and DO NOTHING to help 'improve' life in Giles County. AND NO, I AM NOT GOING TO MOVE.....I LIKE LIVING IN THE 'LAND OF GOBBLETY-GOOK-CRAP'. Don't you??????????????

Jackson and all the problems started long before the 6 of seven board members came on board. Norman is of the old group and the newer 6 are still undoing what the group before '06 has done. Everyone wants Jackson gone but never comes before the board with substantial evidence to hold up to getting rid of him. Same with VanZant and Speer. Why aren't they gone as well. And if you are so unhappy with your board member go to the board meeting and give reason for them to step down, ask them to step down and see if they will. I feel like you could get several to leave due to everyone else knowing more about how to do the boards job than they do. Get them gone and ask the commission to put you in their position. I wouldn't trade places with them knowing that they have a thankless job trying to please a bunch of mind readers.
And Jackson is more accountable now than he has been since he was hired. He got away with alot before '06 but not anymore. If he is caught doing something wrong he has been reprimanded for his misdeed.

6:36 I do not understand why you keep bringing up the DA; His office would only come into play should we need a criminal investigation and although I am of the opinion that criminal evidence is probably available, I have no first hand knowledge of any. TJ can be removed from office for violating his contract by the school board. He has done so frequently and blatantly and the board absolutely has the power and RESPONSIBILITY to exercise their authority and escort him off the premises. The DA is irrelevant in this case. The board has betrayed the people who put them in office by their inaction, excuses, and fence sitting. They have the power technically, but it's more than obvious TJ has the control. You are very much mistaken about the board's authority extending only to the chair and the gavel. 5:38, I can count at least 25 people who have come forward with proof positive of financial transaction that TJ has instigated that are, shall we say, less than proper recognized accounting procedures, even more personnel fiascos, (someone got a 15 k raise which was reported to be a "bonus" for 1 ex), and so many more tricks that individually are enough to constitute a removal from his position, put them all together and you have a school board laughing at the people that elected them. I am not quite sure what you mean by your statement that he is more accountable now than he was before 06. We are now at the end of 09 and he is still doing whatever he wishes and thumbing his nose at everyone else. It doesn't take a "mind-reader" to see this, just a mind. And you say that he is accountable, that he has been reprimanded, could you explain what exactly that means, please and how exactly and specifically it made a smidgen of a difference in his behavior, job performance or income? And yes I go to board meetings, commission meetings, write letters to the editor, I speak out when allowed to, talked to voters, it all still comes down to the board not doing it's job and TJ knows they won't.
