Resolution To Have A Full Time Industry Recruiter!

This was a simple resolution that stated that the County Industrial Recruiter was to be a full time position and thus prevent the Recruiter from holding any other job or position while in the employ of the Industrial Board as Industrial Recruiter.

The first attempt to sabotage this resolution was by the County Executive who declared a 2/3 majority was needed to make this change. After being vigorously questioned about this requirement by more than one Commissioner and having no clear cut statement of support for a 2/3 majority the County Executive sought to table the matter until an Attorney General Opinion could be obtained.
The next concerted effort was from Commissioner Campbell who stated the resolution should be sent to the Legislative Committee since it had not gone before that committee. After it was pointed out that many resolutions including one voted on just minutes before had not gone before any committees the effort was moved in a different direction. Commissioner Jackson gave the magic words, with the full blessing of the County Executive, the county will lose all grants and money from the state if we pass this resolution. It is true that without an inter-local agreement that establishes an industrial Board and a Recruiter the county would lose all grant opportunities, but this resolution clearly did not abolish anything it only sought to establish some accountability for the Industrial Board and its Recruiter. With much fear and misunderstanding the vote was made and failed to gain the 2/3 majority required by the County Executive. Hopefully this will come back at the next Commission Meeting with Commissioners even more determined to do the right thing for the county. Allen Barrett

Sounds as if we not only have a problem with the city mayor wearing too many hats which creates conflict of interest but we also have a big problem with the county executive trying to pull one over on the commissioners and the public - AGAIN. Are those two related by any chance?

Commissioners Tommy Campbell, Bill Holt, Stoney Jackson, Rose Brown, Edwin Lovell, Jack Woodard, Roger Reedy, and Chan Harris needs to be run out of this county on a rail!

Thank you Terry Harwell for trying to do what's right. And thanks to the rest of the Commissioners that voted yes to doing something about this situation that we all know is wrong. Dan Speer is the boss over too many members on the Board of Economic Development and if he's not their boss there are others who owe him big time. Favors with family members. I know for a fact that Stoney Jackson has two sons and they were both hired by the City. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. I believe that this is the reason Campbell, Jackson and the others are so dedicated to Speer. What a shame that they put their own personal gain in front of what is best for the taxpayers.

Not only did he get his son a job, but his daughter law works for finance office. To get a job with the county or city you have to be related to someone in office. What a shame?

WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR THE VOTERS OF GILES COUNTY TO SEE THAT THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE IS THE PROBLEM!!!
She has to go, get out and vote her out next round, because none of the commissioners will bring up the fact she has committed FRAUD by not meeting the State Requirements to hold the office (not to mention all the things she has done while holding this position).
She needs to be kicked out and sued (by our Commissioners) for all she has cost in salary, beneifits and other actions effecting the county since her illegal taking of the office.

Maybe I should have been more clear in my post. Roger Reedy is not going to run for co. exec. As far as Vanzant I don't know. And,to take it a step further, if I did ask her it would probably be a lie whatever answer she gave me. Since she can't tell the truth about anything. But, those days are coming to an end because her lies have finally caught up to her.

I hope Mrs. Vanzant runs again. She has my vote.
You people who smell blood in the water and who seem to despise her need to ask yourself one thing. Precisely who started all this smearing of Mrs. Vanzant? When you figure out who it is, then ask yourself why. Could it be his own political ambitions? Think.

Campbell always throws his name out there. It is only a dream of Tommy's but would be a nightmare for us. But, I don't believe he will run, just talking smack like always. He doesn't want to run and see how much people really do not like him throughout the county. Hopefully his constituency will not reelect him.

I believe if you will check the record you will find that Mrs. Vanzant owns her house on East College. I know you can't stand to accept that, but it's true. Since she does own a house here in Pulaski, why are you whining and moaning? I know several people who own houses in other states. Does that mean they can't be Giles Countians? Why don't you start thinking for yourself?

The difference is the house on E college which is in her name for the tax records, IS NOT HER PRIMARY RESIDENCE for election purposes. Theres the difference. You have to LIVE somewhere for 6 plus months each year for it to be considered your primary residence.

I have a friend who works in another state during the week and comes home on the weekends. Would you say he's a primary resident of the state in which he works or what? Again, what's with your whining and moaning? If Mrs. Vanzant sleeps in the house on East college three days out of a week, would you then call her almost a 50 per cent Giles County resident? Can you see where this is going? Ridiculous.

There is a difference between a private sector job and an elected official.

T.C.A.5-6-104 states you must be a qualified voter of the county, at least 25 years old, a resident of the county for at least 1 full year prior to filing a nominating petition for the office.

This qualification was not met prior to being elected nor does she meet this qualification while serving her term in office.
Can you see where this is going 2:31?? Next time try and inject a bit of knowledge on the subject you speak about in order to not look entirely foolish.

Some may have a problem with where Janet lives, but my problem with her is how she has let down this county. She put who she wanted in the finance office as staff workers. The county has been sued because of stuff she has done. How much money did Mrs. White get out of her lawsuit with the county? How much money was lost on the Hunter Smith building? If you call the office she is never there or will never return your call. She is in with the buddy buddy system. I could keep going on, but I don't have all day to waste on her. To set the record straight my family and I supported her in previous elects, but if she runs again she will not get those votes.

Disappointed Citizen

Why do I look foolish to YOU? Let me answer that question for you. It's because you and I disagree, and so I must be foolish. Are you serious?
Do you know for an absolute fact that Mrs. Vanzant doesn't occupy her house on East College enough to be considered a Giles County resident? Or would you just prefer to continue the witch hunt and spout off T.C.A.'s right and left?
Have you always hated Mrs. Vanzant, or have you decided to let someone else do your thinking for you?

She did a great deed to the people of this county if this is true! Way to go JANET!!!!! She knows there's that Conflict of Interest going on!
Again Thank you so much Janet for doing this for us the taxpayers. Things have got to start changing in all aspect of government and I believe you have started to make the change. Great Job!!!

It was in the newspaper what happened at the EDC meeting. It appears to be true that Mrs. Vanzant DID make the motion to disallow conflicts of interest!
Sounded like Speer got a little mad about the whole thing and started saying the Commission had a personal agenda. Sounds like to me he's the one with the personal agenda making all the decisions and having his fingers in all the pies around the city and county. I believe the 13 Commissioners that voted for the County's Resolution had the people of Giles County in mind and are tired of wasting taxpayers money on something and someone who is not working to get any new businesses or helping existing businesses. It's time to move on Speer. Your days are limited.
Way to go EDC members. Just make sure the resolution that SPEER writes is exactly what you want. Watch out for manipulating words used that can be twisted around to be used in his favor at a later date when things have calmed down. Don't trust him, he's a snake in the grass. Oh, and by the way, think again if you think his budget is only $56,000.00. It amounts to much more than that but Speer does not tell the truth alot of times. Would be nice for the general public to know the truth and see an actual TOTAL budget for all the expenses including what he requests for the Industrial Development Board. Anyone seen that budget?

6:17 pm What I picked up from the paper and Speer's comment was that 'someone had a personal agenda' and dont think he was meaning the commission as that would not be a 'someone' rather a group. I assumed he was meaning the wife of the commissioner who presented the document to the commission when they voted 13 to make the change. Could be a personal agenda there. Dont get me wrong I thnk it would be a good thing not to have the city mayor also being the economic director. Baaaaaad conflict of interest in that one.

It wasn't Vanzant that brought up the subject in the EDC meeting it was Hershel Lake. Vanzant has done everything she could to block any effort at pushing Speer into only one job. When Vanzant finally saw how much the "right" people were against Speer she finally changed her position. Self interest is the only interest she has.

No disagreement from me 9:26. But when I read that "personal agenda" bit I hollered out loud. As my granny said that's the pot calling the kettle black. Anyone with half a brain OR LESS would know that Danny is the one with the personal agenda. Finger in this pot and that. Big salary as recruiter. Paid for mayor. Retirement. Insurance. New vehicle. Trips. Fun benefits. WHOPEE! Talk about a personal agenda. If that ain't personal what would be.

1:18 No disagreement with what you oberve either. Seems there are plenty of people in the city and county that have personal agendas.

Politicians usually start squirming and hollering somebody is after me. Somebody has a "personal agenda". Don't take a foreign language specialist to know that translates into this - the politician is beginning to loose their control. Once you have had your thumb on top of everthing, ran the whole show, it is very hard to go back. To lose even an ounce of control is more than they can stand. The mayor and the few that have gained will not go softly. Look for more mud. When all the mud has been slung that won't change anything. Folks are ready for changes in city and county.
