What Do You Think Of The Local Newspaper?

This is a topic suggest by a reader, it is offered for your consideration and comment.

"What is your opinion of the local newspaper? Is it 'doing the job' of reporting on things that really matter in your life or is it basically a waste of space? Are you getting value for your money? Please don't just rant, try to give logical reasons for your dissertations."

Very disappointed. We all are more interested in one section over another. For our household its section A which is supposedly (I think) primarily the city and county government news. Its annoying to find yet another headline about some well heeled socialite getting an award for the umpteenth time (who cares except the receipient) when we need to be reading about something that effects our lives. Then I turn to the Letters to Editor. But if the editor is not going to publish something he might not agree with then why bother with buying the newspaper?

Couldn't agree more with the above comments , the paper is awful .
Seems to be a 'puff parade' for folks nobody sees in action until they get an award for unknown 'services to the community' from our faithful county exec.
Most of Section A is taken up with advertising and the rest of it with interminable pictures of sports teams so that grandparents will buy 20 copies that week .
We sure wont be renewing next time around if it keeps going like it is . ONLY thing worth reading is Paul Manke's reports on goings-on from courthouse . Giles is a rural county but the paper doesnt even publish weekly sales prices of cows and goats etc

The newspaper reflects the general attitude of the people in Giles County, or the lact of attitude. The Sports section is the best written because all th parents want to know is wjat their kids did at sports. No one seems to gve a damn about what is really going on with the county, county government, lack of funding, charter being rewritten, new private school being created. It would be nice if a group of students at MMC would start up another paper.

Ive been saving my newspapers for fire starter but in future I will just save my old junk mail and use that. Since it came to light that Vicki Harwell is Whitt Miller then Bill Holts letter telling where he called Lake about it and was told 'whitt is a private person', I feel deceived so why support the paper if the public isnt treated right.

11:39 you must be a MMC student because no one in this town gives a crap what their idea of news would be. It has nothing to do with the citizens of Pulaski/Giles County.

To 6:38 Dont you DARE to presume what I do or dont give a crap about. As a citizen of this town I am glad the MMC students are here as they bring much needed tax dollars into our town. If while they are here for a college education they decide to spend money, take an interest in the youth sports programs, or even stay here during the summer or after they graduate that is good for this town and this county. Ask some of the local landlords how many apartments they rent to MMC students, ask some of the sports leagues how many MMC students coach in their programs, ask the local businesses how much money the students spend. These students invest in our community and you have no idea what their idea of news is unless you ask them or give them a chance to show you.

So the people of Giles County and Pulaski don't give a crap about MMC?? Right??

The only institution, in Giles County, that provides any sort of usefull education and you don't give a crap?? Maybe that is why Giles County is going broke and spending money it does not have. Maybe that is why the governments of City of Pulaski and Giles County don't get along .... they don't give a crap. It's their way or no way. Well at least the students of MMC have a clue what the outside and REAL world is like and they have a sense of accomplishment because they know that they are not stuck in the apethetic county. They know that they can and will beable to leave this county and become active and intellegent citizens where people do care ablout what is going on.

But you already know that.

To the person aginst MMC, I think the suggestion for them to start a newspaper was because they would be more than likely the one could do it. But you must be Terry or Vickey and don't want Ford to beat you.

I thought this topic was about what we think about our local newspaper...not MMC. Oh, well.

This newspaper is almost worthless. Every now and then I might get one if I know of a grand kid's picture that's coming out. I enjoy political discourse, but what kind of real news outlet forbids "Letters to the Editor" during the most important days of a campaign? Not fair to the "candidates"...yeah right.

This paper has ALWAYS carried the water for the incumbent politicians and democrats. Wonder how many times we'll get to see Eddie Bass or Lincoln Davis posing with a group of school kids or old folks? They love giving the democrat incumbents free exposure. But I bet you sure won't see that for any Republican candidates.

It's funny how they claim they don't publish "negative" letters, yet they'll let you put anything you wish in an ad if you pay out the nose for it. Besides, why is an incumbent's voting record (for instance) considered negative or mudslinging. Society has become so politically correct that people can't handle the truth anymore. It's pathetic.

Giving incumbent politicians cover is something that does great harm to our county. Our newspaper could be a great tool for having a more accountable government, but that's not Steve Lake runs it and won't be until there's real competition in our local media.

I’m sorry if Mr. Barrett said something about you or your Mother, Father, Spouse, Sister, Brother or lover. But don’t but in so stupidly on every topic. You prove why he’s wrong with something sensible.

Jerry Smith for your answer NO! We need somebody to tell us what’s going on in Giles County.

And what the local newspaper needs is an online newspaper to COMPETE with it. The prices they charge for ads are simply outrageous... because they can. And competition would force them to a higher standard and everyone would benefit, especially the businesses and people of Giles County.

I'm sorry 8:17 and 9:44 I happen to agree with Mr. Barrett most of the time but the times I expressed disagreement with him he was very cordial and reasonable but perhaps that was because I didn't start off by making a personal attack. What I did was state the reasons for my disagreement and why I felt his side was wrong.
Perhaps if your cmments were less hostile and more filled with factual support there would be less tension between you and others. One thing I am sure of is that it's not because you disagree with barrett that he refers to you as an enabler of evil but your unprecedented support for those who are doing wrong. In all seriousness, the local "Citizen" is only a shadow of what it once was. I know most people (even me)get most of their news from the internet now; but there was once a time when everyone looked forward to getting the paper.
The paper used to have more relevance to the average citizen. But of late, there's nothing much in it other than high priced advertizing. I swear I don't see how they manage to find clients.

I do miss some of their old writers like Claudia Johnson, and even many before her. Contribuiting editorial writers are not even people I know, and therefore I can't relate to them. Other than the local sports page and the occasional city or county meeting reports; there's just not much there to want to read.
So sad. If they don't find something better than the citizen of the week thing, they'll be relagated to the ash heap of history.

Bless his heart, as a teenager back in the 70's I used to sit in antisipation every week until we the paper came, just to see his newesst column. He wrote about aliens and big foot. Seriously! Both topics were all the rage at that time, and man did he capitolize on it. Good times for sure!

They print newspapers all day long at the Pulaski Web. If someone wants to start up their own paper, I'm sure they'll print it for you. Heck I bet Lake would print it for you at Holleys.

Every couple of years, I hear rumors about how someone is going to put the Lake's out of business. I guess when they got in there and found out what the cost was, they got a big dose of reality.

Let's see if your cash flow lasts long enough to pay for the writers, people to do the layout, advertising, sales, publishing, circulation, distribution, and all those other little tasks associated with getting a paper produced weekly. It costs money to run any business. if you think otherwise, a, you've never owned a business or b, you've only worked for someone who has just magically paid your salary every week from that unlimited pot of gold and never had a worry about where the money was coming from!

If you don't like something, change it. I'm sure you'll get all kinds of support from our fellow Giles Countians---like all the previous startups. We all moan and complain, but when a choice is offered, nobody does anything until they go belly up and then we're like, what happened?

Everybody complains about the paper, but I'm not seeing anyone putting their money where their mouth is.

As for online papers...you get what you pay for. It costs money for graphics people, web hosting, writers, sales people, etc. If it was simple and that cheap to produce online, someone would have already done it by now! Again, even free stuff costs money!!

I personally like reading a real newspaper. Local or state. None of them are perfect and most of them have different view than myself, but I work at a computer all day long and I don't want to have to sit behind a computer to get my news.

I agree it's definitely not the same since Claudia Johnson left and Stewart is no long the editor. However, Tracy Ayers didn't win two state awards for nothing, so I have to disagree with you haters.

Let the subscribers, or lack of subscribers, decide the issue.

Does anyone know if there is only one newspaper in a town does that get any kind of state funding or otherwise to stay afloat?

" However, Tracy Ayers didn't win two state awards for nothing, so I have to disagree with you haters."

Haters? Really?
Just because someone has issues with the local paper, doesn't mean they "hate" the paper or the people who run it.
What's the matter with a little critisism? Do you work there or something? So sorry to hurt your little feelings, but if they'd listen to their subscribers, then maybe they's have a little better circulation, and you might even get a raise.
And what's up with the business sermon? I know it takes money to do things. But on the other hand have you never heard of Matt Drudge? Need I say more?

Not just the "news"paper, but the media (including radio) in this town are pathetic, but what can we expect with monopolistic ownership by a person who is content with substandard performance of his employees at worst and mediocrity at best?
The so-called news staff and editorial management are the laziest bunch on the planet. And, because of zero competition, the paper can gouge advertisers for rates that are many times higher than other papers in the region that report REAL news and have far broader circulation. With this county's dying/depressed economy, business owners are struggling and can ill afford to be ripped off in such fashion. If I were an advertiser and read the posts here, I would never run another ad based on the declining readership people are expressing.
(And, speaking of pure GREED, that a tiny, rural, no-news paper CHARGES for obits, birth announcements, engagement and wedding announcements is nothing short of obscene. Really, Hershel, are you that strapped for revenue?)
Yes, there are new privacy laws, but it's always baffled me that they seem to apply only to news outlets in Giles County and nowhere else. I swear there have been many newscasts on WKSR reporting an accident with a fatality (for example) at the top of the newscast, yet "the identity of the victim is being withheld" BUT minutes later, the victim's obit, complete with their identity, is broadcast. HELLO?!?!?
You can pull up The Daily Herald online and usually find out more about what's taking place in Giles County than through local media.
Last week was an unusually heavy news week with the school bus accident, the Hwy. 31 fatality, the chili cookoff, etc. yet the coverage on WSMV was far more complete. I doubt seriously the local media would have identified any of the people involved in the accidents had Nashville reporters not done it first. Channel 4 reported that the bus accident was the driver's fourth incident since her employment with the school system. Doesn't that warrant some follow-up? What about the child that was sent home with someone else unbeknownst to his frantic parents? What about the scuffle that took place at the chili cookoff between a mayoral candidate's husband and a citizen that escalated to the point that police were called? Is that not newsworthy (by the way, it's on YouTube if anyone is interested). There are so many unreported issues, it's comical. For example, CVS completed construction on their huge new location months ago and it has sat vacant ever since. Why haven't they moved and opened the new store? (Of course, it's well known on the street that they are waiting until December - probably because of lease issues and opening the same time as the new Lawrenceburg location) but my point is - wouldn't that be a newsworthy business story? Has anyone bothered to interview Eddie Bass regarding the charges that are flying about his family business (and why did it take a political campaign to unearth that a sitting state legislator is running a business that heavily relies on state contracts funded by taxpayer dollars?). If these charges are untrue, shouldn't our state representative at least clarify? Isn't that newsworthy?
I'm personally sick and tired of the local press sitting on their lazy intentions and using various websites, etc. as their "sources" of news rather than getting out and COVERING what's going on.
BUT, it's not going to change - that you can count on. Steve Lake is a CLOWN and would probably be so much happier as an actor or a mime somewhere. With leadership like that, how can we expect a professional press?

Sorry if someone at the paper has hurt feeling over some of these post. But I really believe that most of these "vents are meant in earnest.
Instead of taking these critiques to heart, I suggest you consider their merits.
Many a large company pay large firms to conduct surveys in order to find out what their customer base likes or dislikes about them, in order to better serve them.
What your reading here is real, and better yet: it's free!
I'm sure that not everyone who's posted on this blog wishs the paper along with its owners and employees to be tossed out in the streets. In fact I'd wagger that many would not wish such.
That beind said, I strongly urge you to consider carefully what you've read here, and perhaps implement some of their suggestions.
Unless that is, you don't really care to be the best you can be.

And, most likely, that post came from Steve, Scott, Hershel or someone else from the paper. The point they're missing is that if they put out a quality news product, generating higher readership, subscriptions and greater circulation, they would have no problem selling ads because advertisers would know their messages are being SEEN by the readers. Greedy gouging in the form of astronomical advertising rates is biting them. I don't feel sorry for their struggles one bit!

WKSR
Investigation Continues In Home Invasion
Posted on October 26, 2010

The Giles County Sheriffs Department spent a busy night in northern Giles County. Just after 8pm last night, a couple was sitting quietly in their Yokely Road home when a man shot his way inside and robbed them.

Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton tells WKSR that his officers responded to the area in force and used a K-9 from Horton Park and a Helicopter from the Tennessee Highway Patrol but no suspect could be located in the immediate area. Deputies with the sheriff’s office recovered evidence from the scene that the suspect left behind.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” Helton said in a statement to WKSR. “We request anyone who may know anything about this crime or saw any suspicious activity, persons walking or parked cars on or near Yokley Road last night to call the Sheriff’s Office at 363-2460.”

Sorry I don't know where Yokley road is.

Also, sitting in the newspaper office, calling people for ads is not a reporter. I have never seen a reporter any where and if they do have any..who are they??
Calling the police dept. for any news worthy item does not make a reporter. If so.. anyone can do that.
I have had the newspaper delivered to my home for well over 25 years..and will continue, but I normally know everything before I get it.

I was told that someone suggested to him that it wasn't a great idea for a community newspaper publisher to no longer reside in said community, so he's reportedly dividing his time between the penthouse above WKSR and new domicile in Williamson. Perhaps if Hershel didn't have to use his companies to support both children and their families, he wouldn't have to rip off advertisers with such insanely high rates.

Let me assure you I do know Southern TN Area Arts Repertory (as someone else asked) If you listened to the call you also know how light-hearted the conversation was--we made jokes also. I wasn't a scripted call, or an advertiser--they were simply discussing "dinner theater" and I jumped on the chance to mention STAAR--The Opera House-and Pulaski....anyone listening will do a search anyway since I gave them the city & location--remember most are driving and can't write down Southern TN ARea Arts Repertory. I hated that I got tongue tied about it, but I thought a mention about the great work they are trying to do over there would be better served with a mention than by not mentioning it worrying about a scripted call- also remember it's free advertising and WTN just let me on....hey I know what---keep listening, I think I'm going to call them back and let them know about the flac I got for an innocent mistake and get even more air time for STAAR! By the way--you don't hear me complaining about my pay--my pay isn't based on one phone call anyway thanks for listening feel free to come visit me at our new office at 100 West Jefferson on the corner!

Mr. Abdo, I agree that we should be able to take advantage of out waterways where it makes sense. I've been working on getting access down at Elkton so we could take advantage of getting traffic off the I-65 into the "Southern Gateway to Giles County" If we can get it- it would enable signage on the interstate as an "attraction" as signage is very specific as to what can be there. As with anything, it's not in my direct power or financial possibility to do myself (or organization) What we'll need is folks that "get it" and want to help make it happen as a whole. Get a few people that want to develop it--not always with money...most times co=operation and hard work is all it takes! I was called about your post thankfully- maybe we can get together and explore the idea thats how things get going. Not just the idea, but folks who actively participate in making something happen! Thanks--Tim
