If Words Have Meaning Should They Also Have Consequences?
So it's shameful to refer to someone's weight in a derogatory manner but it's OK to refer to someone as a "faggot".
It seems that one word is as bad as the other when they are used to hurt, or cause ridicule, etc.
What happened at the chili cook-off was beyond reprehensible and while there may be some debate as to who started what and who was at fault the bottom line comes down to the fact that when a public official is involved in an incident that official has a greater responsibility to behave in a manner that does not degrade their position. Commissioner Harwell's behavior on the clip was not only unacceptable it was criminal and revealed a very small minded person who was willing to verbally bully and intimidate in order to accomplish his goals. Calling anyone a "faggot", as Commissioner Terry Harwell referred to Mr. Hughes, is an incredible act of insensitivity and utter slander against a whole group of people who happen to be different. Would it be acceptable to use slang terms to refer to a cripple person, a mentally challenged person, a black person, Latino, Jewish or Caucasian, etc? There have been a number of elected officials removed from office across the country for using terms less contemptuous.
If any group is ever to overcome being identified with such scurrilously hateful speech they will have to stand firm against such language and demand an accounting.

There is a very big difference in using words that describe a behavior or characteristic and using words that attack the physical appearance are use words that have been determined to be hate speech to attack someone's sexual idenity. I'm sorry, but calling someone a "faggot" does not insult the whole gay community any more than if someone calls someone a "cracker", my feelings as a white person are not hurt. "Faggot" is a derogatory mark about an individual, not a group of people. I don't think Terry said anything like "you are gay and all gays are faggots". Then I think it would be safe to say he was insulting a group of people. This was a heated moment between Terry and Bob and when tempers flair (for anyone) whatever words you can get out of your mouth the quickest are what comes out. I do think Terry was way out of line for his reaction and as a result I think it cost his wife the election. So I do think Bob's agenda was achieved. (Which I think everyone could see on the video that obviously he had an agenda with the video camera and waiving the papers.) Let these two hash it out either in court or behind the gym and move on. Trying to blow this into an even bigger "City of Pulaski" event is pretty sad. Don't we have any real issues to be concerned about other than two grown men acting like fools?

Exactly what "charges" do you think Mr. Hughes might bring against the Harwells? Hughes approached the Harwells and started trouble. Most any man would have done what Terry did and many would have done far more. Had he insulted my wife, I would have done far more than call him a faggot. Hughers was not the aggressor in this incident. Seemed to be calm when he asked about the burn permit and in his ensuing reactions. Didnt see or hear him 'insult' the wife either. Terry Harwell was very wrong and what bit of respect I may have had for both husband and wife is long gone. Terry could have easily asked Hughes to leave their booth and discuss it later but he stumbled off that stool ready to fight.

NO, Hughes was the one who initiated the entire incident. When he was asked to leave he persisted. Had I been Terry Harwell, I would have done perhaps more than he did. I think Terry showed some class in not punching the guy's lights out. Had he got in my face with a camera (like someone else we recall), it would not have been a pretty scene.

The problem with Harwell all three of them is the attitude of entitlement they project. The mayor's race was decided by the people and though Vicki thought she was entitled to the position, that she owned the right of ascension, but the people saw what she was really like on the video and other devious behavior at other times. If only people could have seen the video before Terry was elected.

What difference does it make? Not that it's any of your business, but I am in no way related to Mrs. Vanzant. I feel a certain empathy and concern for her because of the way she has been treated by one who ought to be totally ashamed of himself. I'll carry that one step further. It is my opinion that the name-calling and brutal attacks mounted against her contributed, at least in part, to her health issues. Would you think it shameful had this happened to one of your loved ones?
