More Than The Chili Was Full Of Beans At The Chili Cook-Off
It seems that there was more than spices in the chili at the recent Chili Cook-Off. Perhaps, based on the behavior of Giles County Commissioner Terry Harwell and his wife Pulaski Mayoral Candidate Vicki Harwell, there may have been more than water in some of the cups they were drinking from. The behavior they displayed certainly was not that of people who hold public office. In less time than it takes a pit bull to eat a Chihuahua Vicki Harwell commanded Terry Harwell to, "take care of this", speaking of Bob Hughes who was video taping the Cook-Off and the violations to the City Fire Codes. A long standing struggle has been taking place with Mr. Hughes and the selective way the city applies it's fire codes and issues beer licenses.
After being called upon, the video shows, Commissioner Harwell stumbling out from behind his Chili pot then approaches Mr Hughes, reaches out and grabs his camera and shoves him backward.
After some verbal ranting by Commissioner Harwell, that includes a verbal attack against me, in a very slanderous manner Commissioner Harwell loudly refers to Mr Hughes as a "faggot". This is a term that is not only demeaning to anyone with any sensitivity to the feelings of others but especially to members of the "gay community". As a County Commissioner, which Mr Harwell quickly pointed out to Mr. Hughes and challenged him with "what you gonna do about it" and then the declaration that "you don't have no rights", Commissioner Harwell not only owes the community and several individuals an apology he needs to explain just what he meant in slandering the "gay community" with such intolerant "hate speech". With the kind of animosity expressed by Commissioner Harwell it is evident, especially in light of the recent suicides that resulted from "sexual bullying", that he can not effectively represent the entire community nor can his wife as alderman and especially as Mayor of Pulaski.
With the actions and bigoted insensitivity shown by the Harwell's perhaps it's time they retire from public office. Perhaps it's time for the "Gay Pride" group at Martin to become more active in fighting bigotry. Perhaps it's time Murrey Chevrolet, Mr Harwell's employer, along with the county institute some sensitivity training for employees and public officials.

I don't like what Terry Harwell said but don't all of a sudden act like you give a rat's rear about the gay community. What a hypocrite!

In my opinion there was no reason for Mr. Hughes to act as he did, nor was it appropriate for Mr. Harwell to act the way he did. All of this could have been gone about in a more professional manner and it comes back to Mr. Hughes. He would have been better off informing someone that could have taken action and not provoking anyone and making the situation worse. All he did was show how much sense he doesn’t have.
Mr. Hughes is upset because his business was a failure and now he wants to bring anyone he can down. The situation was handled incorrectly but it also should not have been done in front of a crowd of people including children. Both sides took the wrong approach but Mr. Hughes was the one that tried to make something out of nothing in the first place.
And Mr. Barrett talking about the gay community being offended is a joke. He dosent care, its just more trouble for him to stir up.

Terry Harwell is only human like the rest of us, and who would not rise to the defense of his wife? I think he handled himself a lot better than I could have. I'm curious. By what means did all the other booths keep their chili warm?
Were the Harwells the only camp to use a flame? Did all the others run extension cords to keep their food heated? If so, from where? I've never attended this event, so I don't know.
If any other booth had any type of flame, Mr. Hughes would have been more believable if he could have showcased more than one alleged law breaker.
But then the Harwells had a permit, so that deflates that claim in my opinion.

I have been in beautiful Sanibel Island for over a week enjoying life. I wasn't at the Chili Cook-Off but I did look at the video. I do not understand where some people think Bob Hughes could have controlled the incident after Vicki Harwell told Terry Harwell to "take care of this" and Terry came out from behind his Chili Pot walked quickly toward Bob Hughes while saying, "I'll take care of it, I'll take care of it" then he grabbed the camera and shoved Bob backwards.
One question is since I was not there and had nothing to do with any of it why did Terry Harwell in his ranting and raving feel it was necessary to bring my name into it by referring to me as a "nut".
Mr. Harwell embarrassed himself with his cursing, arrogant announcement "I'm a County Commissioner and what are you gonna do about it" statement. Mrs Harwell has been an embarrassment with her arrogang deceitful support of Mayor Speer in private but opposition in public. She has voted her own interest at the expense of citizens and while nicely in public playing the tolerant peacemaker, until this incident, behind the scenes has proven to be every bit the obsessively deceitful manipulator in the catagory of Nancy Pelosi.

If you go back and read what I wrote about the "Gay Rights Group" previously any objective person would see that there is no inconsistentcy in my position then as now. Because I disapprove of the lifestyle doesn't mean that I can't feel for the persons in that lifestyle. It is no different in how I feel about adultery, the act is reprehensible but the person is still of value, lovable and worthy of all rights to live without fear of mistreatment.
I am not a member of the NAACP, even believe it has become a racially divisive organization, but would be very offended if someone was called the "n-word" in my presence and yes I have criticized people who used that term within my hearing. So being offended by the use of a sexually derogatory term is no different and should cause the same reaction in a person as the use of a racially derogatory term.
What Terry Harwell did in using that term was to insult and slander a whole group of people just as it would have been an insult and slander to a whole group of people had the "n-word" been thrown in disgust at Bob Hughes.
It's your own personal biases that prevent you seeing this situation and most other situations with any objectivity. While your alligence to your friend or family member is commendable it is a very dangerous thing to blindly support anything or anyone, as it often leads to the enabling of wrongdoing by an otherwise well meaning person.

As a graduate of Martin College I would like you all to know that students put money in the community. Though they may eat in the cafeteria, students also enjoy going to local restaraunts, not just fast food joints. Reeves is a very popular lunch spot for students who are unhappy with the options on campus. They also shop at stores on the square because they are so convinient for students just one block away. Do you not notice the increase in traffic around the end of August every year? That is the breathe that keeps Pulaski going these days. Not to mention the sports teams and parents that frequent our hotels when visiting. There is also a large percentage of Martin students who live off campus who are from out of town. They shop in Pulaski on a daily basis. Do you really think a college with over 1,000 students and numerous employees has no effect on our local economy.
The only problem I see is that when a person graduates from Martin they are forced to leave to find employment. What can be done to keep these graduates here?

i went to high school with bob, and he is a nice guy. However, he antagonized the harwells(whom i have NO love for) and terry was simply standing up for his wife. I would have done the exat same thing. In fact, i probably would have punched him and REALLY gone to jail.
Its easy to second guess someone from the cozy confines of your home. If any of you were placed in a similar situation, im sure that many of you would act in a similar fashion. In hindsight, im sure that terry regrets much of the confrontation. It doesnt matter now, as nothing he could say would change public opinion.

The Mayor does not have as much authority as you want to give them. He nominates appointments that must be approved by the aldermen, and he chairs the meetings of the board of Mayor and Aldermen. That is about it.
And although he is an employee of the Economic Development Board, he (Dan Speer) chairs that even though D Rackley is supposed to be chair!
Its time for a new economic development coordinator.

I know Bob, He was told he can't cook on the sidewalk because it was against the fire code. but during the cook off everyone can have open fires on the sidewalk (Except Bob). Vicky would not give him the time of day to discuss his issues as a pulaski business owner and her as an alderman. She claimed she would have an open door policy but she did not say she would listen to anyone and work with them to help resolve any issues.
Here's my question: was it just me, or did anyone else think the food/atmosphere at Punk'N Blues was just nasty? I tried it several times and found the food to be inedible and the surroundings very unappealing. You don't open a restaurant without a kitchen and serve people food grilled out back in the alley. No beer permit or anything else short of a total renovation of the building and complete overhaul of his business model would've made any difference. His business failed because he didn't offer a quality product, pure and simple. I don't know him personally and don't have a dog in this fight, so to speak - just sayin'.....................
I have heard that Vickie has not congratulated Pat on his victory. She claims that people ran specifically to get her beat. If this is the case, then this has been going on for years. It may have worked against her this time.
Also, she was so worried about who put up a sign or who had a Pat Ford sticker on their shirt or car that she let it negatively impact her campaign. I'm not sure Pat Ford is ready, or if he will ever be ready, but I am darn glad that Vickie is not our mayor. She is spiteful, vengeful and two faced.

Regardless of whether Mr. Hughes antagonized Mr. and Mrs. Harwell, it is wrong of them, as Alderman and County Commissioner, to act as they did. When in a public position as they are, it is best to represent yourself in the least controversial way, which both miserably failed to do.
In all honesty, both Harwells should step down from their positions and Pulaski should find people who are more capable of decency to replace them.

I just watched the video. Yes, it does not show everything. Everything like Terry and his daughter eating everyone's chili and washing it down with a diet coke. Did you see the size of them? Where was the attack by Bob Hughes on Vicki Harwell? She was the one doing the talking. When Hughes asked about a permit Vicki told Terry Harwell "you deal with this". Terry stumbled out from his perch behind the chili pot and said, "I'll take care of it" then grabbed the camera and pushed Hughes backward. One question I have is was Terry cooking chili in that pot or was he eating from it.
I also am confused about how Mr. Barrett got into that conversation and continues to be brought into it by the enabler.

Terry Harwell obviously thinks that being a commissioner carries certain priviledges since that was his first statement. I am sure that if Vicky had gotten to be mayor she would have had that same attitude. Being and elected official should be an honor and the office should carry any power other than the obvious. Your relatives should not be hired. If you vote for someones project that does not mean that your relatives are entitled to jobs. We as citizens should not go to an elected official and ask them to get our relative a job. Jobs should be filled on merit alone not by who you know. Both parties in the fiasco were wrong and should be ashamed of their behavior and language.

When I first heard of this, I said to myself that Bob Hughs shouldn't have made such a deal of this, and perhaps he was causing trouble. But after learning all the facts, I now understand that he has done a GREAT service for every citizen of our town; in that he stood up to the bulling tactics of an elected official, who clearly thinks they are superior to those who elected them in the first place.
The enforcement of City ordinaces and State regulations apply equally to everyone, and in all circumstances, no matter what.
Fox 17 called the State Fire Marshall's office to get their perspective on the fire ordinance, and their spokesman stated that the Local Fire Chief had "NO authority" to relaxe or modify any state fire ordinace.
So say what you will about his motiviation, he was completely within his legal right to video them or anyone else in public, and he was right to demand they obey the same ordinaces they made him comply with.
I strongly suggest both Harwells resign their positions imediateley, or face being stripped of their postions. They have proven their contempt of the citizenry by their very public actions toward a man they clearly don't like, and don't think they have to treat as an equal. How much more would they do to anyone else?
