Courthouse Hours Of Operation

Many complaints have been expressed about the difficulty of working citizens being able to get to the courthouse and conduct business with the current hours of operation. Current hours of operation are 8 to 4 with one hour for lunch, which means each employee is paid for forty hours while working only thirty-five hours each week. How does that serve the public and the taxpayers who fund the government?

If they want to help the people of the county, they should stay open until 6 a couple of days a week. If they do not want to do this, they could open for 4 hours on Saturday. This would still give them only 39 hours a week.

Believe the reduced hours were put into effect by Wakefield. Vanzant should direct the courthouse employees work hours go back to 40 hours each week. People who have to work our of county to even get a job have to take a half day to do any courthouse business. How did this county ever get into such a pickle for not providing the most basic services to its citizens.

I believe the hours were set when the courthouse was open until noon on Saturday. when the courthouse started closing on Saturday, the hours were not changed. the individual office hours are set by the department head not the county executive. if the county clerk's office hours are to be changed the county clerk will have to do it.

The courthouse and annex would better serve the people if it was open on Saturdays, and why cant it be?

The County Executive controls when and how the courthouse and annex are open and used. Almost every election
see promises of opening the courthouse on Saturday or later in the evening but then after the election everything goes back to business as usual. This is the worse county I have ever lived in for officials serving the people, everything is done for the convenience of the officials and to hell with the people

I'd like to throw out a question for discussion. Who is legally liable for anonymous slanderous remarks made on this blog?

The person that makes them. Any anonymous post can be traced to a mac address on a computer. If you know an IT guy it isn't that hard to find out. The only problem is someone saying they weren't the one using the computer. It rarely holds up in court. Only if someone can prove that their reputation has been tarnished or they lose business due to defamation will they have a case. If someone already has a bad reputation, such as Barrett, nothing can be done. Laws have been put in place to protect the blog administrator. That is the only reason that all of the rediculous topics can be discussed.

Which is worse to expose the liars and thieves for what they are or just be quiet and continue being lied to and robbed? I for one believe that calling a person what they have proven to be isn't wrong it's just what they earned.
This topic in fact was more a survey than a complaint from the way I read the topic.

I would beg to differ with you. I believe this thread is designed to simply stir up unnecessary trouble. Why must you guys assume mthat everyone in elected office that you disapprove of is either a liar or a thief...or both? Where did that paranoia come from? I think you know the answer.

Is it true that one of the county depts.is hiring another employee? What position is open and has this position been filled? Just wondering if anyone has heard this lately. Nothing has been advertised in the paper that I have seen and with jobs so scarce it would be nice for those looking for a job to have the opportunity in order to work closer to home. Also was wondering if there is a county website that posts available job openings.

No job openings posted on line that I know of. If there is a job opening in the county it will have already been filled even though they might go through the requirement of listing in the paper. All jobs in county government are given to friends and family. Period.

If you are hired for a job and that job is 35 hours a week then you are paid to work 35 hours a week not 40 hours. I don't remember the courthouse being open any later. I do remember half Saturdays but I bet they rotated who worked those Saturday so that they still worked 35. If you call around you will see that is the norm. The state people that I know work those hours also. Stop saying they are paid to work 40 and only work 35. That is not true.

I have to agree with 10:36 taking money under false pretenses is the same as stealing. When a person is paid for forty hours they should be working forty. That's a problem with this country today people thinking they're owed things instead of earning things.

Ya'll are missing the point. They were hired to work 35 and that is what they are working. Yes, 35 hours is still full time and it gets benefits. If they were hired to work 40 hours and they were not doing so that would be stealing but they were hired to work 35 hours and work by salary not hourly. No one is cheating anyone.

You can call the state if you want but since the ones I know work the same 35 hours a week I don't think you will get the answer you are looking for.

Emergency management used to be paid by the hour. I am not sure if that is true now or not. Just because you are salary does not mean that you cannot get overtime. You do not get paid 1 1/2 until after 40 hours though.

And why does the electric dept. take off so many days. You can't pay your bills or get anything done near before or after a holiday. They take off. I will voice my opinion to all that I have mentioned and if others would say something maybe they will start working on days they need to be open and be closed on the holiday. And yes I understand about the weekend being made up on Monday, but power company was closed on Friday and Monday.

By State law and supposedly Giles County personnel handbook, all salaried personnel are "exempt", that means that they do not acquire overtime pay. They are elegible for compensitory time only if the County Executive allows it.

Well I guess that answers the Emergency Management question in that Barry Whitt and the County Executive are as tight as ticks.

For the record, from the time of Bill Potts to today, the director of emergency management never was an hourly employee.

You have to be joking!!!!!!

Billard work for free? No WAY; if you think that he was a volunteer your are nuts. I know that he received lots of kickbacks and money under the table. When he was in Emergency Management he got lots of money to buy all sorts of stuff. You think he really did that for FREE?? How do you think he got that SUV and all that equipment he had? AND, were did that equipment go when he was kicked out?

He is nothing more than a guy who is out for himself and no one else. He is not from here and he does not give a damn about the people in Giles county.

You and Barrett need to leave and let us alone.

Guilt always makes the guilty accuse others of their crimes.
Billard worked at no charge to the county so of course he must be a crook after all he wasn't born and raised here. Several thousand dollars of Emergency equipment was stolen by a former employee, they know who did it but are unwilling to prosecute but they do no wrong for after all they were born and raised here.
It's a sad situation that because of where you were born and raised determines your guilt or innocence instead of the evidence... only in Giles County.
