What Is Proper Dress For Church?

This is a topic requested by a poster.

This is the request, "Anonymous said... Barrett..

I have a suggestion for a thread topic. Why not a discussion of whether or not Christians should dress up to go to church? Some people say it discourages those who don't have nice clothes to wear, while others feel it is a matter of reverence for The Lord's House. Some even say those who wear coats and ties to church are creating a stumbling block to those who otherwise would repent. I tend to think those who cause trouble and strife are more the stumbling blocks.
There would be no need for name-calling or personal attacks with this one."

Allen Barrett said...: Why this has become such an issue, not just with the requester but in many areas around the country, especially in the midst of so many major issues and attacks against Christianity, I don't know. Personally I have never been concerned about how others dress. I do believe people should dress with modesty but even that should not prevent a person from attending worship service. My point of view is you can't teach people who are not present as easily as you can those who are there. No one should ever be be denied the opportunity to take part in the worship of our Lord. I personally think all the different denominations and self proclaimed Christians judging others are greater stumbling blocks.

The people are the Church, not the buildings, and the church is not to be divided, yet man continues to form different denominations for whatever reasons.

But I do agree with the poster. I think the point to be made about proper dress for church is lost in translation. Who is to say what is and is not proper dress? The point is...will people stay away from church because they use the excuse that they don't have good enough clothes to wear? I think many do. And the other side of the coin is that some people seem to come to church to make fashion statements. To me, that's just as bad as making excuses. Personally, I like to wear a coat and tie to church on Sunday mornings, but normally dress down on Sunday and Wednesday nights. That is a choice I make and do not bind it on others. It is a matter of control. It all centers around control. Reference to a "flock" is on point. Follow thy leader as he deems fit and dare not utilize scientific proof. If not thy leader will surely change the interpretation of the scribblings as deemed necessary.

You may be enrobed in any cloth as long as thy contribute to the collection of monetary notes and follow the code of conduct set forth by your leader.

I've often thought about what people wear to church and how things have changed. I remember when the females always wore a hat and gloves and Sunday dresses. The men wore suits and a tie. When did it change? Females now wear pants to church. It may be dress pants or blue jeans. At least they are there.
Some men still wear suit and ties, some have a tie and nice shirt. Some even have blue jeans. Wear what ever you want just go to church.

Now I hope this don't offend anyone but it's something I have noticed, the black people always dress up. What I would call Sunday dresses and hat. The men in suits and ties.
I admire them for that.
Now so someone want feel fill left out. Look how commissioners use to always have on suits, vest and ties and now some may wear shorts and tee shirt in the summer. It's just how things have changed. 4:55 I agree times has changed in what people wear. Just don't go to church in only your birthday suit.

The shoe man said................. A quiet 'Amen.'

I tried to focus on the prayer....... But my thoughts were on his shoes again..

Aren't we supposed to look our best. When walking through that door?

'Well, this certainly isn't it,' I thought, glancing toward the floor.

Then the prayer was ended............ And the songs of praise began.

The shoe man was certainly loud..... Sounding proud as he sang.

His voice lifted the rafters........ His hands were raised high.

The Lord could surely hear.. The shoe man's voice from the sky.

It was time for the offering........ And what I threw in was steep.

I watched as the shoe man reached.... Into his pockets so deep.

I saw what was pulled out.......... What the shoe man put in.

Then I heard a soft 'clink' as when silver hits tin.

The sermon really bored me.......... To tears, and that's no lie.

It was the same for the shoe man... For tears fell from his eyes.

At the end of the service........ As is the custom here.

We must greet new visitors, And show them all good cheer.

But I felt moved somehow........... And wanted to meet the shoe man.

So after the closing prayer........ I reached over and shook his hand.

He was old and his skin was dark..... And his hair was truly a mess.....

But I thanked him for coming.......... For being our guest...

He said, 'My name’s Charlie............ I'm glad to meet you, my friend.'

There were tears in his eyes......... But he had a large, wide grin..

'Let me explain,' he said............. Wiping tears from his eyes.

'I've been coming here for months...... And you're the first to say 'Hi.''

'I know that my appearance...........Is not like all the rest.

'But I really do try....................To always look my best.'

'I always clean and polish my shoes...Before my very long walk.'

'But by the time I get here........They're dirty and dusty, like chalk.'

My heart filled with pain............ And I swallowed to hide my tears.

As he continued to apologize.......... For daring to sit so near

He said, 'When I get here............ I know I must look a sight.'

'But I thought if I could touch you....Then maybe our souls might unite.'

I was silent for a moment............. Knowing whatever was said

Would pale in comparison.... I spoke from my heart, not my head.

'Oh, you've touched me,' I said.......'And taught me, in part'

'That the best of any man..............Is what is found in his heart.'

The rest, I thought,............... This shoe man will never know.
