Dr. Webb Resigns As School Director

In a very quick turn of events, this morning, it seems Dr. Webb has decided to resign as Director of Schools.

The decision is believed to be the result of the controversial School Board Meeting held last Thursday where questions were raised about his personal and professional conduct.

It is reported that Dr. Webb acknowledged several professional and personal failures in his resignation.

The questions now seem to center on whether those Board Members who voted to keep Dr. Webb were more interested in covering for him than in dealing with problems affecting the entire school system.

Mike Young and Jerry Bryant are about as useless as they come.

They had to know about the issues surrounding Dr. Webb.

Useless!

I believe there has been a legal investigation/police involvement that has led to his resignation. While I'm sure the events at the board meeting have shaken him up, there are bigger things at play here.

Now it's time for the board to spend a ton of money with TSBA to bring another stranger into our county and mess up again. Vote out 1,5, and 7. It's time to put in a local and try a woman this time, but NOT Cindy Young.

I am a teacher in the Giles County School System. I am glad Dr. Webb resigned today. For those who think his financial management skills were so great, you have no idea to what extent our children suffered due to this man. He created a "balanced budget" by not creating enough teaching positions; thereby, placing far too many children in our classrooms. The high student to teacher ratio was very inappropriate, especially were our younger and special needs students were concerned. I know we have to have a workable budget; however, our children deserve to get the time and attention they need in classrooms with appropriate student to teacher ratios. I pray our county will have a director whose top priority is focusing on the education of our students. It's a great day in Giles County, as far as this teacher is concerned.

The "teacher" at 7:07 was probably one of the ones who needed to be on the list of transfers or firings. Maybe if more of the teachers didn't abuse their sick days and cause the use of so many substitutes while they are taking sick days at the beach, then maybe the budget would be in better shape. I guess getting off work at 2:30 or 3:00, AND having one of those hours as "planning," AND having weeks upon weeks of other vacation isn't enough time off for the lazy among us.

I wonder how those great teachers from the past were able to more than adequately teach students in a one room school where students of all ages were educated and became great leaders in every field.
Teachers today like most other younger folks are major whiners that blame everything but lazy self for failings.

They are making Gonzales temporary director of schools..... this is truly a sad day in giles county. We may be out of the fire, but we have landed directly in the frying pan. He may have a doctorate, but he has on many occasions shown his inadequcies. If this change is made permenant, our school is asking for bumbled paperwork, upset teachers an parents, and several unfinished projects...... started and then forgoten when something else floats by. If you are a tenured teacher or a concerned parent ..... call your school board rep and tell them to just say no!

I am not and never have been a teacher. I would like to know just how many children were in a one room class room. I doubt many as there was small school all around. Maybe some of the problems is parents not taking responsibility of their children. Then the government put more on teachers than teaching the children. What happen to the day a special child wasn't put in the class room with other children. To me that hurt that child to see the others doing things he/she couldn't. Then it hurt the other children because the teacher had to spend more time with that child/children then the one that could learn.
Did someone finally really check Dr. Webb out? Just because there was a complaint about him was no reason to resign unless he was afraid of what would come out. Understand I never said something could come out, just wondering why he resigned and will we ever know the truth.

I just want a person who truly cares about the children of Giles County and the GOOD teachers and principals. Our county deserves better than some of the teachers who showed up to speak last week and the principal who let a child be bullied by a group of teachers. I heard Mark Cardin has run Giles County High into the ground. The problem is, at this time of year, all the good teachers already have jobs. We'll be left with the ones that nobody else wanted, like some of the ones we already have here. It's just so disgusting.

Gonzales is not the best choice. He will ruin this school system. I am a parent from elkton. I know and love the teachers at that school. Tney are dedicated and hard working and it is not uncommon to drive by and see several working long past they are off. That school is a family of teachers parents and the children they share. When Gonzales came he corrupted that school ...... the teachers were miserable, the parents were unable to approach him....he would make promises and then forget them..... he is the worst candidate..... I am afraid that with him many of the good teachers.... (because manyof them are fine educators.... not all ..... but many are good) will leave and we really will be left with the bottom of the barrel!!!!!!!!!!! No Gonzales

One thing I'm trying to understand is why Jerry Bryant felt it was appropriate his WIFE, who applied for a job in the Central Office recently and didn't get, came with him and went into every discussion with him. That is so unbelievably inappropriate, and possibly illegal if personnel issues were discussed in her presence. And why was he the only one there? I thought a decision like that had to be made by the board and passed by majority.

I am a teacher at GCHS. I can assure you that Marc Cardin has done nothing EXCEPT improve our school. He is well respected by both his teachers and students. Perhaps instead of making negative comments and being unsupportive of us, you should come by and see for yourself.

Furthermore, being a teacher isn't easy. Some of us see 100+ students a day. Our curriculum, expectations from federal and state levels, as well as parental expectations are constantly changing. Plus, we are the only dependable adults in some of these children's lives. We are there for them when they need advice, encouragement, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to celebrate with them. Combine all aspects together and it is a difficult task. However, at the end of the day, I wouldn't want any other job.

My wish for our school system is to have peace. For years now, it has been in complete chaos. We need a director of schools who will provide for our children to the best of his/her abilities, support our teachers and principals. And perhaps most importantly, provide a sense of comraderie amongst all of our schools. We should not want one school to prevail over another. We should want success in all of our schools and treat them all equally. We should feel excited if we work at one school and another receives #1 middle school in the state! We are all in this together and in the end, it's our children who are the top priority.

Dear 7:59,
Since I support Webb's resignation, perhaps I too have been one of those "lazy" teachers that you speak of in Giles County. Yes, my hours are from 7 to 3 each day and I have a 45 minutes "planning" period. However, when I go home to my own children, I grade papers while cooking dinner. When my toddler sits in my lap, I have a laptop beside me to work on student assignments. My husband sits up with me at night to cut out materials for centers the next day so that I don't have to stay up too late. I have a bag to take with me on road trips so I can work on things for my classroom and a night lamp so I can work at night without disturbing my husband. At school, I work through my lunch most days and only go to the restroom during scheduled times because I have too much to do. Perhaps I shouldn't be so lazy and develop a better work ethic. Maybe then, I could be teacher of the year three years in a row rather than just two. Also, maybe my students, including those with disabilities, could achieve 98% proficiency on TCAP ather than a measly, embarrassing 96%.

In addition, perhaps I should care more about my students. Taking them to their sports practices, buying them jeans and tennis shoes, and sending food home with them isn't enough.

If I was a good teacher, perhaps I would see your side and support Webb as Director of Schools. Apparently, my incompetences have blinded me from seeing how glorious this man is . . .

It truly bothers me to the core that the finger is often pointed at teachers. While our hours are as stated above, teachers often log an additional 10-20 hours per week. Before blaming us, you should also consider that we would risk our lives to protect your children or grandchildren if it came down to it.

That being said, the recent transfers are just one of many things that have caused teachers to be upset with Webb this year. Teachers are often transferred, but it is rarely because of cronyism, as with Webb. He has been extremely unprofessional in so many ways. He has run the county on fear with a divide and conquer type of leadership. While he has been great at balancing the budget, he does not know education. He is simply a politician and has been detrimental to our school system this year. It is because I am NOT a last teacher and am a professional that I do not support Webb. Now that he has "resigned," there are many things that will come out that we have been afraid to share. The truth always comes to light.

So the positioning begins...first, right or wrong we know the board has to meet over possible resignation etc. what stinks is money was spent to seek out "who" we should hire. Now no matter if it was personal demons or a power struggle--all the sudden the board didn't like (or some) didn't like what he was doing...so a way was found for him to be gone. Now you see why Tee was popular...smiled shook hands, and didn't rock the boat. I also find it sad that 44 posts into it with suggestions of a "best fit" that Mr. Smith hasn't come up. #1 school, hello? Yes teachers did the teaching, but go into that school--Mr.Smith was right there with them being a leader--never hear of nonsense at his school. I for one did like how Webb was changing things, but at the hire I was disappointed that more consideration wasn't shown Mr. Smith. So Mr.Smith, if you're out there and would have it...I hope you are given the opportunity.

I will repeat what I publically stated to the School Board during the interview process and continue to believe, Mr. J.B. Smith has proven to be the best principal in the system and deserves the opportunity to apply his skills and discipline to the entire school system.

I strongly urge everyone that dealt with the incompetence that was the Gonzales' principal tenure in Elkton to speak to the board members (if they can get in touch with them)...to the idiot that accused teachers of allowing a student to be abused and then bullying should have to give a public apology after the actual facts of the issue are also made public...I know each of the teachers and principle he made the accusations against and not one of them would allow a student to be bullied or abused. the facts should be given in the full public view in the same way this gentleman defamed the teachers and principal...This man that stood at the board meeting and defamed those individuals also threatened Dr. Webb before he spoke so highly of him...My understanding is that the child in question has stated none of the accusations the father spoke of actually took place and this gentleman (loose utilization) is upset because of other issues...I personally would like to see all of those he defamed file a Defamation of Character Suite against him and set the example of what happens when individuals publically defame respected, devoted and hardworking teachers.

There is only one person in Giles County who has proven that he knows how to accomplish excellence in our schools, and that is J. B. Smith. For Bridgeforth to be in the top 5 middle schools in TN 3 years in a row, and this year to be the #1 middle school, academically, in all of TN, says all you need to know about J. B. Smith. He sets a very high standard and expects everyone to measure up to it, with his support and help. He might make some tough, unpopular decisions, but they will be based on his personal knowledge of a situation and with the best interest of the school system in mind. Nothing will be arbitrary or done solely at the bidding of a school board member. He also will communicate clearly with teachers, principals, board members and the public about what he is doing and why. Often it is not knowing or not understanding that creates apprehension and discontent. Mr. Smith would be amazing as Director of Schools, and after his life-long accomplishments as an educator it is beyond belief that Giles County would snub him for this position.

I thought the board had been Jackson and Webb's puppets. They told the board not the board told them. A few buttered the Directors up to get someone in their family a good job.

I would agree why would Dr. Webb resign if he wasn't guilty. What I would like to know is guilty of what? I can't see moving teachers and principals around a crime. Not saying I approve just not a crime. Drinking on the job if he did is a reason to be fired. Caught driving drunk on the weekend not a reason to fire him.

It will be a LAWSUIT like no other- Watch them settle out of court - Procedures WERE NOT followed. BYRANT, GREENE and the others who conducted their secret WITCH HUNT need to be named. There is a thing in the law about acting outside of one's scope of authority that will apply in this case. Board members have no authority except as a body, no one board member can take unilateral action. Forcing someone to resign by extortion is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

To 8:56 - The answer is YES!!! His leadership is exactly what we need on the BOARD. He will be much better than the BALL-LESS wonders currently serving the great citizens of Giles County.

Why did Jerry Bryant want to give Dr. Webb more money than he asked for, then take up for him when Greene and turner wanted him fired, then turn against him. OR did he turn against him. did he find out something he knew would come out and go see Webb as a friend and tell him what had been found out and suggest it would be best to resign?

Lot of rumors going around along with bitching and i wonder if anyone really knows what was the reason he resigned. The people should be told.

You should be surprised. The people in Chatham County warned people about Webb. He made a mess of the system.

Cheatam County was screwed up before Webb got here and is just as screwed up two years later... its idiots that run the school board that screw things up.

FYI: If anyone one was paying attention to Mr. Cable at the meeting-he read BOE policy stating that board members may act individually OR as a group for the good of the system. Pay attention to details. Stores had no respect for teachers and stormed out like a little kid. He was happy to be on board as long as any vote was unanimous but a little disagreement and he took his toys and went home! Good riddance!

If the arrogant dumbass think Dr. Webb was working under the influence, they should have requested that he take a blood test. Anyone can say something about anybody but that don't necessarily make it so. Right child groper?

Doug Eade and Jerry Bryant, if you are a man of character you will reveal what happened over the weekend to make you change your mind about Dr. Webb. You owe it to the people of Giles County who elected you to know the truth. If you will not reveal what it is I would ask the people of District 1 and District 7 to not vote for either of you in August. If you can't be truthful with the one who put you in office then you will not be truthful on the board. think about this and I will pray for both of you.

I need to be appointed as superintendent of schools for Giles County. There are several reasons why this would would be a good thing. First and foremost is I'm not from around here. I have no ties to the "good old boy network" and my ideology is not affected by the War of Northern Aggression that seems to be ingrained in this area.

I'm a good and experienced manager.

I'm empathetic to the educators' wants and needs, and recognize that the students in this county need to develop better personal responsibility and self-discipline.

And, I need a decent job.
