Email topic: County budget requests for fuel

Quoting Penny Thoughts: I am just wondering what everyone thinks about the additional $ that everyone in county government is requesting for Gasoline? I know there are a LOT of county vehicles that are allowed to be driven to employees homes each day and night, but the county pays for that personal gasoline usage. It's like county employees who have county vehicles don't need a personal vehicle because the county provides one for them, complete with gasoline.

no it's not right for the county employees to use the county vehicle for their own personal use.

yeah i agree the county vehicles should be used for work and work only. i see the ambulance director using his county vehicle to take his kids to school, pick them up. driving to and from work everyday. 2 and 3 ambulances out at a time at different restaraunts sitting there running. makes no since to me. why do they even have 2 county cars anyway, do they do anything but ride around in them and look pretty? why does the police dept get to drive their patrol car home? i wish someone would pay my gas bill to and from work everyday.

As with this topic on two cents worth, I ask that when you accuse a county employee of using their county vehicle for personal use please be specific on who it is and what they are doing. You see not all who have use of these vehicles abuse this privilige but most people see these kind of comments and group all employees in together. I know several county employees who do not abuse the use of their vehicle they use it for the purpose intended.

to the other anonymous comments, you are all correct.Law enforcement officers are always on duty even though they are not on their regular shift. They could be needed and called at any time.On the other comment concerning the ambulance service director, there seems to be abuse of the vehicle, driving back and forth home, shoping at walmart, going to church in the vehicle,as well as driving his child to school. Is it necessary for him to First Respond from his house. Is this not what the supervisors and other employees are there for. There are times during afterhours the director may be needed, but there is time for him to drive to town and get his official vehicle. He also could just drive his personal vehicle to whereever he needs to go.How much fuel and money could be saved. This also could apply to the Rescue Squad Chief, however he is donanting his time and money, when the ambulance service director is being paid, with the big raise he give to himself last year he should be able to afford it.Past directors never an offical vehicle to keep 24/7 and they somehow managed to do the job just fine

well how else would he get to the store and get his kid to work? as far as a supervisor responding to a call, you was kidding right? maybe you need to look at what their job actually is.

Seems like a supervisor's job should be just that..SUPERVISE... That meaning the supervisor's main duty should be see that all calls are answered in a timely and proper way, whether it's himself or the other employee doing the job

I know there are a lot of things said on the blog that maybe shouldn't be said, but at the same time there is also a lot of truth being written. Sounds like the commissioners ought to earn this pay raise we know they are going to give themselves, investigate and put a stop to misuse of vehicles.

In response to IM's comment. Why don't you list the several county employees that you know that don't abuse their vehicle use and we'll assume all the ones not listed do abuse theirs.

I have read several of your comments on this blog and you seem to be something of a smart alleck. It would not be fair of me to list the names of the employees that I know and than assume the rest abuse this privilege because I do not know all the employees of the county who have use of county vehicles. I believe it would be more effective for people to list the few who do the abusing!

Well for one thing the state sees this as a full school day, no matter how long you stay at school on a particular day you have two trips to make-one to school and one home. They would spend that amount of money regardless of the time spent at school. As for teaching the first day is usually used to get schedules, school supply list, just plain letting kids get used to something new.

I believe what Mr Barrett was asking about was why the 1st day of school weren't a productive day by making it a day of learning. He even told us that the state makes it a whole day.
Maybe letting the kids get used to something new is ok for the little kids but what about high school or Jr. high? If parents wanted there kids to go to school that day they should have went with them to help them adjust to something new.
It was just a plain wasted day that cost a hole bunch of money and caused a lot of trouble for everybody who had to take there kids then come back and get em.

Maybe Mr. Barrett, with all his wisdom and intelligence, should be placed "in charge" of the school systems so he can run them properly. He might even be placed in charge of the entire state. Now wouldn't that be refreshing?

Bet $50 he could take a million out of their cost in the first year plus improve learning, manners, and give the little varmints a better chance at life when they get out. Bet the nea would be jumpin over the moon to stop him - maybe a good place to send the nea

How dare you refer to the children of this county or any other county as little varmints? This sentence over shadows any of the other words in your post.
This is an old saying you need to learn: “Even God doesn’t mess with an angry mother”

Sounds like someone has a problem with actually doing something for their children, that's actually the problem with the first day of school isn't it. Parents had to take off from work to actually take care of their children! although I believe that any child that goes to school in Giles County rides a bus so why would parent have to take any child or pick them up? If a parent takes their child to school it is by choice, there is an alternative way to get them there, THE BUS,so that is not a legitamit excuse.

I don't know who it is that is bashing Mr. Barret, but we need a whole lot more people like him in this county.
I'm afraid to list my name, but he isn't and I admire him for this.
He is an investigator of the mishandlings of this county. Does that make you mad? If so, you are guilty of something. He asks questions that make some people mad, but at least he is involved with what is going on rather than sitting back and just letting everyone do whatever they want. He makes people accountable. We should all do the same.
You all who are bashing him must be afraid you will be next.
Watch out good ol boys.
