Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. What Do We Want to Keep Out of Giles County?

Okay, gang... time to put on your thinking caps! If we were to start at square one, and develop as perfect a plan as possible for keeping "nuisances" out of Giles County... what all would we want to count as nuisances?

Once we have developed a comprehensive list, we can move on to the next stage, and maybe, just maybe, we can, over time, develop an ordinance for Giles County right here on this blog, wiki style. So, let's get started...

I'll use up some of the obvious choices.....

(1) Junkyards

(2) Hazardous waste disposal facilities

(3) Rock quarries

That'll do for a start.

All of the above except junkyards- I'd love to see the strip clubs gone never to return. It's pitiful that the first thing visitors see at Exit 22 is these two seedy clubs. Great entrance to an All-American City, and The Land of Milk and Honey.

How about foreign-owned and run water-bottling plant taking 200,000 gallons a day from the Giles Co spring at Campbellsville .Imagine the trucks in and out -worse than a quarry ?

what we want to keep out of Giles County:

big mouth cry baby windbags.

people who want jobs but don't want the industries that create jobs.

people who want services but don't want businesses and industries that would come here and create more revenue for our county governmen.

people who use their rights to deny others their rights.

people who make claims to know something based on what their wife's hairdresser heard from the barber's cousin.

people who find it easier to complain rather than find the good around them.

people who think they have all the answers and that their answers are the only solution to any problem.

Now that I see the list it sounds a lot like some yankees (most every yankee) I've ever met.

I agree with your post anonymous Wednesday, August 02, 2006 9:40:18 AM to a point. I have know of many down home, life long residents of this county that have the mentality you speak of. I think that it was put very plainly at a commission meeting regarding the financial act of 1981 for example. These people are deserving of this title: C-A-V-E
Citizens Against Virtually Everything. A lot of people in this county aren't happy unless there is some sort of unrest. Always complaining about someone or something.

To the GC Native's teepee - 8-2-6, 9:40:18 Reminds me of an old joke about an Indian who couldn't move - doctor prescribed cod liver oil - tells doc no move yet ... for several days - finally tells doc, me moved, doc say fine, Native say not fine, teepee full of dung! It's time to hang up the tomahawk, bow & arrows, take a bath, & join the real world. Obviously you're too far left to be right about anything.

nymouse 8/2/6:: You are what you write & that is unfortunate for all of us. If the tire is flat, are you going to fix it or turn the radio up & dance around the car until you get run over by someone who has a job to get to? Business will not invest their money in a community that will not manage their finances. They want "can do" & action.

The school property tax increased by $1.4 million in 2004-5, their spending went up $3 million for 2005-6, and it's going up another $1.1 million for 2006-7. The $5.3 million 3 year total is well over double the $4.7 million school property tax of 2003-4! The school board and several commissioners fought to put every bit of that and a lot more on to property taxes. That is no secret! The financial shenanigans & mess in the school system is no secret either! A tidy pig pen is still a pig pen, and no one is going to fight to get in it. Business will not consider moving to a place where government spending & taxes are out of control! If that isn't bad enough, you end your message by telling everyone not born here to stay away! Move away from your cave. Think Spring Hill!

Giles County is a beautiful area. The surrounding area is filled with excellent workers who have the near extinct traits of common sense. If you hire a "today" Ph.D. and change the handle to the other side of the tank, he'll never figure out how to flush! Maybe that's the problem we are facing??? don m

8-4-6 // smoke signal to GC Native's teepee, // - trying to cypher your nannymouse 8-2-6, 9:40:18 - I see 2 eyes in the peep hole & hear squeaks behind the wall. Your frustration with yourself must be overwhelming. Reminds me of an old joke about a native who couldn't move - doctor prescribed cod liver oil - tells doc for several days that he no move yet ... finally tells doc, me moved, doc say, fine, Native say not fine, teepee full of dung! It's time to hang up the tomahawk, take a bath, & join the real world. The world looks better when your glasses aren't fogged up. I don't care if you do or don't move, it isn't my problem. Obviously you're too far left to be right about anything.

I'm retired, don't want more services, & don't want a job! Yes, we need meaningful jobs and industries in GC! Do you know of any investor looking for a business site where they try to double taxes in 3 years - with a school system that can't account for their assets and fights to prevent financial management? You say new business will be the tax source for more money for government to spend! Your last sentence eliminates any chance of getting industry and business. They will not move their management or any part of their business where there is a "Yankee go home sign". If you hate Yanks, Bin Laden is looking for recruits. There is an endless line of communities begging for jobs and industries! Life is too short for idiocy.

What have you done to define problems and find solutions? Have you suggested anything other than spend more, faster, and cook the books so no one will know? We have a huge credibility problem called corruption. It is very isolated. Let it fester long enough and someone will wind up in a different kind of gated community. We owe it to each other to not let that happen! Perhaps, the next commission & school board will eliminate the problem and this community can start to prosper. In due fairness they have made progress. don m

Sometimes there is no need to presume anything. Similar attitudes are repeatedly demonstrated all around Giles Co, including on this blog ."It were good'nuff fer mah grandpaw" is no reason to keep the County in the Dark Ages today . There are some VERY sharp residents in Giles County -maybe it's time to start listening instead of "Rebel Yellin"

The whiners whined because they were "born here" with a birthright to carry on a great tradition. Then they find the tradition was freedom, free choice, and not a group of government gangsters telling you when you can pass wind. The "born here" gang shifts gears to claim they are "born again" ... able to see the light and opposed to their dark ages. Yet, the little gang that legislates by darkness continues cursing sunshine. Will they forever hang upside down in their C.A.V.E. awaiting their sunset?

Ignorance has nothing to do with intelligence or potential - it's simply the act of chosing to ignore reality. The common sense that is a tradition in rural areas is reality. That independent wisdom is poison to tyrants. Thus, a handful of tyrants want to overthrow the will of nearly 80% of the citizens along with the heritage of Giles County. Tyrants try to convince you that they must run your life because you are incapable!

The good people of Lewisburg didn't want a dump in their back yard. They banded together to fight it. The zoning board believed in the dump site proposal. It promised visions of tax revenue and happiness for all. To my knowledge there was no evil political intent, just an unfortunate political decision that silenced the will of the people. The people could not overrule their government and the rest is history. It took a couple of years, but the results are catastrophic. If you are a die hard zoner, there are countless homes for sale in the area, priced to sell at almost any price ... just a short drive from Giles County. They come complete with elaborate zoning laws designed to protect the boogieman from you.

The thing that really amazes me is how the qualifications for commissioner are nothing near what is required to be a certified professional teacher. And these people have financial control over people with Masters and PhD degrees! Something is terribly wrong with that picture. And to think some of these commissioners act like any teacher raises will be coming out of their own pockets!!!!!

You really need not attack the commmissioners, they approved and appropriated the money TWICE before, that is to say TWO TIMES, and the money did not make it to the school system personal, they wanted to be positive this time that when they gave the money it would go where it was suppose to!!!!!!! Tee Jackson and a few on the school board is what is wrong with this picture not the commissioners.
