Why Are Meals Provided For Members and Guest at Economic Development Meetings????

Today and at each Economic Development Committee Meeting a full meal was served to members and their guest. Today that list totaled twenty for the formal meeting and lunch. Several others ate after the meeting. Twenty meals at the cost of $10.00 per meal plus catering fee totals over two hundred dollars to serve free meals to people who are among the wealthiest in the county. These meals were paid for by tax dollars and rate payers. Allen Barrett

So do you propose that these people bring sack lunches?

Did the meeting last all day or did they just turn it into a big day.

Could they not take a break and go out to lunch?

How many hours did the meeting part last not counting to get together?

Hascal Mayes, who is chairman of EDC, has never taken a dime for serving on this. Neither has he asked for reinbursement for his gas. He is doing it to try to help the county. If the county does not think what he does is worth ONE free meal a month. I am sure he would reinburse the county for it. Personaly I would just as soon he got off it.

The meeting began at approximately noon and ended about 1:30. During this time there was a meal followed by five speakers then followed by the business that was voted on.
The question isn't whether they should bring a sack lunch or whether they deserve a free meal. The matter is that with the unemployment rate holding near 15%, many people having trouble paying their utilities and putting food on their own table why should their money be used to feed others who are very capable of feeding themselves. When the County Commission meets they eat at their own expense either before or after the meeting.
If Mr Mayes has not taken a penny, as some others may not have, that is very commendable and worthy of praise. It's unfortunate that the board gets painted with a broad brush based on the actions of some who have taken thousands of dollars in benefits from rate payers and tax monies. Allen Barrett

6:05 Can you not add anything of interest other than your usual "did someone just make another enemy".

If posts about what is taking place is making an "enemy" then tough.

Most elected or appointed folks know when it is time to go. And let others serve or bring new ideas. That change can be a good thing. Others get in and enjoy their position. Or whatever. Control perhaps? In some positions the big bucks. Regardless, some don't know when it is time to go and have to be shown the door. That door is opening for several now.

Jobs are scarce. Folks are struggling. Congrats to Mr. Rackley. Please do something. Anything! Try new things. Try new ways! Unemployment is running out. No jobs around. We are trusting you to get things moving ... before we have to move.

Why does Speer hold this meeting at noon and have a meal with it? City council and city workshop meet at noon without a meal. Problem could be solved by moving the meetign to 5 pm, 1 pm or 11 am.
If new chairman Rackley wants to make an impression of change he could start with meeting time change without meals and save taxpayers money.

Amen to that 7:34. The lunches that are served are also served to Dan's Secretary. Do we need to be feeding her too??? Not on my tax dollar. I say Mr. Rackley needs to cut a lot of the waste out starting with meals followed by cutting the position of Econ. Dir. Most of the time when a business or company wants to come into a place they contact a Lawyer who in return contacts the County and City officials. Then some counties use their Chamber of Commerce as their Recruiting Agency. Maybe that's why Speer wants to stay on the Board of the Chamber of Commerce. Maybe to make sure Pulaski don't get any high paying jobs! I wonder!

I suppose you think it best if everyone brought a sack lunch? Perhaps a mid-afternoon meeting time to avoid any question of food?
I know that the meals are catered when the county school principals have their meetings. For Pete's sakes, what's wrong with that? Whether you like it or not, these are professional people who are doing wonderful things for our children and for our county. I'm sorry if you think they aren't deserving of an egg and biscuit or a hamburger steak!

Sorry 7:27 I understand the meals at PES are much more than a biscuit or hamburger they are full meals including dessert. Maybe if you told everyone what these wonderful things are these professional people are doing for our children and county it would be a bit easier. So far the expenses far and away exceed any benefits they have created. If these "professionals" are hungry they make enough to feed themselves, after all what would they do if they weren't at the meeting. Tax money is short, unemployment is very high, the future looks bleak for many and it's past time to cut expenses and pass the saving on to the payers.

It seems there may be some confusion developing about who is involved with the meals mentioned in this thread.
The Economic Development Committee or (EDC) holds their meetings in the Pulaski Electric System (PES) conference room. As far as I know PES does not directly fund the lunches for the meetings but are heavy contributors along with county tax money given to the EDC.
While PES has made a commitment to re-examine their expenses and make cuts I know of no commitment from the EDC. The EDC and The PES Boards are made up of some of the same people but are separate. Hope this helps. Allen Barrett

To the person who claimed to be "His Wife" on one of the above posts, I want to clarify something. If Mr. Mayes hasn't been paid a dime for his time then I think you should know that's not the case with the County Commissioners. They get paid $30.00 each time they attend the ECD Meetings.Mrs. Vanzant can verify this and she'll tell you that's right. The Commissioners are paid through your County Tax Dollars to serve on that committee. Now, can't at least these members pay for their own lunch? I think so, along with the rest of them. Enough is enough. Talk to your Council Members and Commissioners about not funding all the wasteful spending.

You have one of the most frequented office in the county and many times everyone goes to lunch at the same time and vacation is the same way. Loretta should know better. She should have those employees forecast their vacation in advance. Everyone that does payroll and insurance should not be allowed to be off at the same time. Employees go up there and need a question answered or need to discuss something pertaining to their paycheck or insurance and there will be no one there who can help. So what gives Loretta? Why don't you manage your employees?

The EDC has not done very much to develop the economy of Giles County and therefore doesn't need to be spending tax dollars. This is a matter that is costing every taxpayer and rate payer in the county. I happen to be in full agreement with the first paragraph of "The Real Deadman".
As for turning the other cheek and praying for others, I certainly do pray for others but I have never been and probably could never be a pacifist. While the principle Jesus taught is indeed extraordinarily commendable turning the other cheek would have eliminated Jews and others identified as inferior and objectionable from the Earth. Prayer without action is as hollow as a skull without a brain. Sitting in a corner watching TV and praying for food without making any effort to get some food is absurd. Once again you are so simple in the way you perceive what is being said. Mr. Barrett didn't say that he found anyone objectionable. He said that "turning the other cheek would have eliminated Jews and others identified as inferior and objectionable from the Earth" if you remember there was this little thing called the holocaust back in the 1940's and if someone had not stepped in, ie not "turned the other cheek", then more Jews would have died. Remember, someone considered them inferior and objectionable. Try to stay on the same page as the rest of us, OK?

As for the appointment thing seems your covetousness has done a bit of self elevation for yourself.

I wish we could get the 2 of you together for a boxing match and who cares about the outcome~it's just to keep the back and forth stuff between a couple of people out of a discussion intended to think through problems~if you want to banter make a thread for just that~depending on the way someone may look at it~this ditraction of accusations is just that ~ maybe we can appeal to the one (whichever/whoever) not to draw the thread into rebuttle and barb trading! Also-if you agree with the thread it makes sense why you are here~if you always oppose what is said~why would you come here other than to distract what the others want to discuss~? It makes no sense to me~ Mr. Barret is relaying what is said at the meetings and asks the questions~why should that scare the neysayers?~Maybe we could just gather at someplace and have an "open" debate? Just be prepared to bring your lawnchair~~

Do you not believe that wab thinks Mrs. Vanzant and select others are considered objectionable? It's obvious by the things he says about them. Do you not see that when he calls people belittling and nasty names that he considers himself superior? What about when he accuses people of lacking in knowledge and of essentially being stupid because they disagree with him? Amazing.

Actually the question was why are meals provided for the EDC at their meetings at Taxpayer expense. Once again the thread wandered away from it's intended direction, partially my fault for which I apologize. I let someone get my dander up about other things. So, what is the EDC going to? It appears the taxpayers disagree with the EDC's free lunch.

I know her and she had lied, time and time again. I have seen her be very deceitful to our county. What more do you want??? You are one of a few still supporting her in comparison to who has in the past. She has exposed her rear too many times...it is talked about by a lot of citizens. I have been asking around who everyone is going to vote for in the co. exec. race and all I am hearing is Scott Stewart. People want a younger, honest, fresh thinking person for a change. It beats the dead weight, lying machine we have in there now. Do you not wonder why so many people call her a liar? It is because she is one. And to answer your question, no I don't have to ask myself "why". Her reputation speaks for itself. We will see at the poll next year and next year will be here before you know it. My support will go to whoever runs against her. She burned her bridge with me. Funny thing was, all she has ever had to be was be honest...she couldn't do that and so she loses my support.

Wrong! You would be surprised who has rallied to Mrs. Vanzant's side, because they are tired of the attacks, smears, and accusations being made by a little group of people who are determined to see her demise. How ironic is that? What is the real motivation? I think you do need to ask yourself why on that one. I find that quite troubling. It will be very intersting to see who they put in the race against Mrs. Vanzant. I have an idea who, but will justbe silent on that for now.
Well, you vote for Lassie if she runs against Mrs. Vanzant if that's what you want to do. But my vote stays with the present county mayor. And I don't even have to ask myself why about that.

Although it's none of your business, I detest abortion and would never be anywhere close to it.
It sounds to me like you really don't like the idea that some people fare better in life than you do. Is it jealousy? I ask, because I used to hold hard feelings toward people who were doing better than me. But I realized how wrong that was and now appreciate the fact that some people simply do. And I don't resent them for that. You know what? Some people have paid their dues to be in those positions. I neither defend nor condemn them.
I'm confused, because you talk against abortion (a conservative idea) and seem to resent those who are in more elitist postions than you are (a democrat mantra).
What on earth did you think I referred to as sinister? What I SAID is that just because someone else says something is wrong or sinister doesn't necessarily make it true.
Perhaps you need to check your box to see if your brain is still there?

I was referring to the fact that just because someone says it's so doesn't make it so. For example, just because someone is running around town calling you a kook doesn't necessarily make you one. However, I would tend to agree with the rumor. My apologies if I didn't structure that statement so that you could understand it. Nevertheless, that is what I meant to say and I stand by it.

Please, you have gone around this entire blog saying that anyone who disagrees with you has "Hook, Line and Sinker Syndrome"!!! Well I am neither an MD nor a Psychiatrist, but I do know that there is no such diagnosis. I also know, there is no such diagnosis as Cranial Rectal Insertion, but believe me, it is something you suffer from. I wish you would get an enema to clean the brown fog from your eyes, and maybe it would stop you from spewing the same brown fog across this blog. You think I am arrogant, but you are just as arrogant, the difference is, you are so sanctimonious, the way you preach about arrogance, belittling others. You should beware where you step neighbor. Your mouth, (fingers) are writing checks you can't cash. I have grown weary of your petty diatribes. You may say what you will about me or others, but realize that your words are, to those who are aware, feathers before a maelstrom and are just as easily dispelled. Therefore please crawl back into your web of self deceit and grovel as you have always done. I have always thought I was a free thinker, I do not lightly follow anyone, and I give my loyalty sparingly. Unfortunately, when you vote, you are usually voting for the lesser of two evils. Does that mean that either person is evil? No, it just means that neither of them is worth voting for, but you vote for that which is less distasteful. This is what you fail to realize. I sound like I am rambling, but I am responding to all the heinous posts you have levelled at me and others on this blog. Please get over yourself, and just see someone to have a Rectal Craniectomy. Believe me when I tell you that I am not the only one who posts in opposition to the mud-slinging, name-calling, and belittlement that routinely takes place on this blog by a very small and vocal minority of Giles Countians. You know, I could make the same assumption about your anonymous post, couldn't I?

But if you would let us know who you are in some way. At least call yourself, "Holier than Thou", or maybe "The Giles Gem; or The Brilliant One". How about, "The Opinionator - or Opinion Hater". Something quaint that we can recognize, so we can ignore you.

Turned over any "new leaves" lately? No, I knew you couldn't do that. You have too much fun trying to belittle those who disagree with status quo on this so-called free speech blog. That's cool.
As for a name to use here, I suppose I could sign off as "Opposing Viewpoint" or something of that nature. But I'll not play that game. It's childish.
Besides, you need to accept the fact that I am not the only voice out there who takes people to task when they call names and do their best to absolutely ruin others.
Dig this. We have an electoral process to remove unsavory officials and a criminal justice system to handle those who are breaking the law. It's just that simple, isn't it?

I was going to post something witty and insightful, but you wouldn't be able to understand it anyway. The fact that you won't identify yourself is the childish thing. Thank you for demonstrating your true colors. You have no desire to improve anything in Giles County, you just want to deride those who are trying to make a difference. We may not always make the best decisions, but at least we are trying. "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The next best is the wrong thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing." -- Theodore Roosevelt. You are doing the worst thing, neighbor. I know everything you are going to say now, it will be all of your usual rhetoric. Please feel free to speak anyway, I am done playing your childish game. When you can distinguish yourself from your pack, we can talk. Enjoy your day neighbor.

Since you have already distinguished me from others who post anonymously, what difference does it make if I sign off as this or that?
I stand by what I said and have nothing to add. It would be futile anyhow.
