Airport Information

After a visit to the airport I fine much that was previously believed about the airport and its operation, to not only have been clouded but in some instances plain untrue.
In a recent Budget Committee Meeting of County Commissioners it was announced that the county had been required to give the airport an unbudgeted amount of $55,000.00 last year and that they were to receive another $5,000.00 dollars of unbudgeted money this year, all of this was in addition to the regular amount that was budgeted for the airport by the county. This was information that primarily caused some on the Budget Committee to join with the County Executive when she announced her suggestion to sale the airport.
A more clear explanation of these expenditures reveals that the $55,000.00 was an amount the county had agreed to set aside to repave the runway more than ten years ago. The county had agreed to put aside $5,000.00 each year to be used when the time came to repave the runway, that way there would not be a requirement to take a huge amount out of the general fund at one time. The county unfortunately did not keep their side of the agreement and failed to set aside any money so when the time came last year they were required to take the full amount out of the general fund. The city had been setting aside money each year and thus did not have the expense of taking the full amount out at one time. Again this year the $5,000.00 was left out of the budget, it was reported to some as an oversight, but it was reported in the budget committee as a surprise expense.
So the question is just how much does the county/city contribute on a yearly basis to the airport and the answer is approximately $25,000.00 combined.
Almost every expense incurred by the airport has been paid for by money generated by the airport or from federal and state grants.
The airport is an asset to the city/county and seems to be almost self sufficient thanks in large part to the tremendous efforts by the airport manager Randy Jones.
Mr. Jones is paid approximately $25,000.00 a year in salary which is the amount of tax dollars given by the city/county. The amount of money received from the sale of gasoline and hanger rentals supplements Mr. Jones salary which when all things are considered isn't excessive. My belief is that as long as tax money isn't being used I'm not really concerned about how much he makes if he is satisfied.
I just appreciate greatly the efforts he has made to create a first class operation that all Giles Citizens can be proud of. Allen Barrett

Well that is certainly good news to hear that it's not some sort of scam being done to the county by the City of Pulaski. Thank you MR. Barrett for posting these findings~guess that falls under an "opppsss" from the County Budget.

Thanks for your good work Mr. Barrett.

Now my question is:
why has the financial manager and CEO Mrs. Vanzant let the annual $5,000 slip through their fingers all these years? These two are surely incompetent.

The above posts are correct. If the citizens of Giles County only knew just how much the Financial Director and Mrs. Vanzant has cost this county in errors and misjudments. I don't believe the taxpayers can stand any more mistakes like these two are making. Won't be long that these errors are going to catch up with the county budget and a tax hike is inevitable.

Just wondering about your last statement, 11:57; You will make certain to inform as many people as you can, etc, etc. It won't make much difference in the election. You have to be 18 to vote. I don't know of many folks over 10 years old who give any credibility whatsoever to an anonymous note, posting, or even a phone call.
I am new around here but from reading this blog, I think I have a pretty good objective analysis of the political atmosphere. I am not related to anyone, don't go "way back" with anyone, and don't know anybody's daddy, granddaddy or whoever. So here goes the truth. Hope the good citizens of this county can handle it. It seems that one or two citizens take it upon themselves to educate themselves about issues, behaviors of the people who work for us, attend the meetings, and publicly state their OPINION of public officials. They may or may not get the whole story, but they have done me a great service by showing me where to start looking so I can also educate myself about my new home and if I doubt their word or want to verify their statements, their name is right there in the phone book for me to contact. Then we have this group who accuse the one or two known posters of stirring up trouble and name calling. The only name calling of private citizens is coming from this second group, they've not offered a single word of rebuttal to the statements regarding issues, and seemingly feel that the freedom of speech should be abolished when it's exercised against one of the "good ole boys or girls." I understand that group 2 doesn't want any talk of corruption or misdeeds by our gov't, what I don't understand is why? It is our duty, responsibility, and privilege to do what group one is doing, and to suggest they they are out of line smacks of socialism. The gov't leadership is made up of citizens who are public figures and if you want to defend them and their actions, please do and give supporting statements or at least tell the ones who want to know where they can access your information. You will gain some credibility. But to suggest a private citizen should be silenced and then call him/them names is dangerously close to slander, the crime that you posted about earlier, but showed your ignorance of the law and further more, you are trampling on the American flag for even suggesting that a private citizen should not express their thoughts. You don't have to agree, in fact many might see your side of the argument, if you had one. But like I said as an objective outsider, it is crystal clear that you have neither the courage of your convictions, nor the intellect that enables someone to form a rational opinion. Your only opinion is that you diapprove of the messenger(s), regardless of what he/they say. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think I am and since I know none of you and am not from this area, I know I am seeing things more clearly than most. Please don't waste yours or my time, any of you coming back at my post with such silliness as "cave" people, cheerleader, etc. Prove me wrong by offerering actually examples of public figures and their "correct" and proper actions, nothing negative about a private citizen either. To do so will prove me correct in my other assumptions that you are a closet socialist who thinks freedom of speech is only a suggestion and not a brilliant concept of our forefathers.
Sincerely,
William C. James

Mr. James,
Regardless of your "objective analysis", I stand by every word I said. It's unfortunate that you haven't been here long enough to see who the real troublemakers are. And your being an apologist for them is only feeding the flame.
You mention private citizens being attacked? How so? The only ones I see being attacked are those who hold public office (the ones the CAVE people have decided must go).
You can bet on this; I won't be anonymous when I'm out campaigning for those victims of the smear campaigns that run rampant on this blog. Again, it's unfortunate that you can't see that.
You have a lot of nerve to call me a closet socialist. You know NOTHING about me! You know NOTHING about my love and concern for Giles County!! How would you like it if someone called you a communist?

But you might as well be talking to a sign post as to the one that can't tell anything good about the government. She don't know anything to tell so all she can say is Janet has my vote, my family and friends. My family and friends don't tell me who to vote for or me them. We might say so something about who is running, but everyone is allowed to vote, their on choice.

Also she denies saying anything against about the Cave people she calls them. It's here in black and white.

Thank you for your kind words, those of you who took time to read my post; to those who only felt I was stepping on their toes, well maybe I was. However, if you reread what I wrote, I did sincerely request that you prove me wrong by offering at least one fact regarding the favorable job performance of the local gov't. Didn't read one, not a single one. I did read where the so called troublemakers and cave people, (whatever that is) are doing all the attacking of the office holders. Again I say, if you take offense at questioning any office holder, you are attempting to sidestep what our forefathers had the wisdom to write into our Constitution. Presumably this "trouble maker" and cave persons are not paid with my tax monies and therefore I have no right to question them or their motives as numerous anonymous posts have done. The gov't officials however are paid with my money and therefore I not only have a right to question them, but a responsibility to let them know if their behavior is less than I expect and it is absolutely the slide toward socialism when you denounce one who exercises his freedom of speech. It is slander to denounce a private citizen without ironclad proof of unacceptable behavior.
Once more, tell me one reason that any official now in office, deserves my vote. Just one will point me in the direction I need to go for my own personal research. The problem is quite simple and is prevalent in many small communities; if one is in cahoots with the "powers that be", when they are found to be guilty of misdeeds, they prefer to "shoot the messenger" rather than clean up their act. One example please.

Mr. James...
Please name just one local official whom you think is guilty of misdeeds in office?
Yes, welcome to Giles County. But this is NOT a small town that is governed by crooks and villains. I've lived here all my life and have never heard one word to substantiate that idea other than on this blog and by way of a few carefully worded letters to the editor.
I don't think anyone here is trying to "shoot the messenger" as you say. But I do believe the messenger needs to stop with the unrelenting attacks. In other words, how many times does one have to make an accusation or call someone a name?

7:38, Most would call your response very clever, to answer my question with a question, which is supposed to divert the reader's attention away from the fact that you did not offer a single instance where a public official has done anything that is worthy of my vote. Please reread my posts again, nowhere was it implied, inferred, suggested or stated that I felt my new home was governed by crooks. My post dealt with my observation that many anonymous posts choose to insult and criticize a private citizen for doing what all private citizens should be doing. That is exercising their freedom of speech right and holding public officials accountable and being a watchdog with public monies. It is totally irrelevant whether or not I agree with Mr. Barrett or these cave people you refer to. What stands out to me is that Mr. Barrett has the courage of his convictions and signs his name unlike the anonymous posters who are much like snipers, shooting off their mouth and retreating to the darkness. That is my whole point. The few that sign their name may be totally wrong about things reported here, may only give one side of an issue, or may have their facts mixed up, or maybe they hit the nail on the head. Either way, they believe in the Constitution and practice their freedoms and stand by their beliefs. To attempt to stop them from doing so, is equivalent to what George Orwell wrote about so many years ago. The excuse that one could lose their job, community standing, ect if they posted publicly doesn't hold water with me; as an employer, I realize that my employees may not agree with me politically and I frankly do not want "yes" men surrounding me.(not to mention the legality of denying a person their constitutional rights.) No, an anonymous post is cowardly spoken with a child-like mentality by someone who cares not for the issues but to fling insults and sound clever with their own musings.
And even though I "asked you first"( I do know how to be immature if I must in order to make myself understood) I will answer your question even though you did not answer mine: I have personally witnessed untruthful statements made by the director of schools, flagrant untruths, as well as numerous questionable other behaviors. Again, I witnessed this personally and although he is not an elected official, he is appointed by an elected body who have the authority to fire him but refuse to do so even when presented with proof positive of the actions. In my opinion, this puts the character of the board members on the same level with any number of lying politicians which will be the downfall of our community.
Now will you answer my question?
William James

7:33, I must say I am not surprised. You could have saved us both time had you admitted from the beginning that you could/would not give one single example of why any, just one, but you can't name one person who has earned my vote. My word, I am new here and I even know of a few elected officials who have earned it and my support and gratitude. Yet you champion all officials and defame private citizens for expressing his/their opinion, which is as I previously stated, all intelligent people should do if they are familiar with the issues and care about the future of our county. The level of interest that you and "others" (may be only or two) have in the posters who stand behind their opinions is most curious to me in light of lack interest that you display on a reg basis of community happenings. Yet you never even miss an opportunity to degrade a private citizen at every post. That is backwards by any definition. Discuss issues has been called for more than once by many and yet you persist in insulting the private sector and champion tax paid people and can't even name one single action that make them worth voting for. Very bizarre behavior and I might also add that as I am very familar with slander laws, you are quite lucky that you have not been sued yet. You or someone else called anonymous are frequently guilty of slandering someone who brings to light dome misdeeds, you are very lucky indeed.

On the other hand, there are those on this blog who have accused elected and/or appointed officials of everything from messing around on their wives to outright thievery. That sir, is slander! Look it up in the dictionary.
As I said, you lost my respect, and I have nothing further to say to you. I suppose that gives you license to have those "parting shots", so have at it.

Wrong. Sometimes the person with class has to explain why he or she doesn't get down to the mean and nasty levels some do. It has nothing to do with tooting one's own horn. It's rather a matter of explaining one's behavior when others choose to misbehave.
