Cuts In School Budget But Not Administration?

Well, looks like the uproar over lost jobs and reduced school programs has passed and it's back to business as usual. Teachers and staff laid off, programs cut back, things that were explained as absolutely necessary, so why wasn't any cuts made in administration, in fact why are there proposed increases in the budget for school administration when more important programs have been cut and teachers have lost jobs?

These are the proposed budgets for the School Board and the Central office. A full copy of the proposed county budget can be obtained for a fee of $9.30 from the Financial Management office.

72310  Board of Education:

2010-2011 Audited Actual - $677,744.00
2011-2012 Actual  - $625,553.00
2012-2013 Proposed Budget  - $837,629.00

72320  Director of Schools:

2010-2011 Audited Actual - $241,204.00
2011-2012 Actual  - $248,160.00
2012-2013 Proposed Budget - $252,685.00

72410   Office of the Principal:

2010-2011 Audited Actual - $1,761,373.00
2011-2012 Actual - $1,791,209.00
2012-2013 Proposed Budget - $1,801,572.00

So which departments took the big cuts it was 72620 Maintenance of Plant which saw a reduction of over $200,000.00, and 72701 Transportation which was cut over $600,000.00.

What a crock that is. How do they supposedly justify the cuts while increasing the administrative budget?

It's our kids who are paying. The maintenance budget needed to be increased, not cut. Half of the heating and cooling units are so old parts cannot even be purchased for them anymore. The techs have to try to fabricate what they need. Unreal. What can be done about this? Anything? This absolutely makes me sick to my stomach. Would calling the school board members make any difference, or is this set in stone?

As it stands right now there are fewer people working out of the central office so what would the big increase be? I now the state gave a 2.5% increase so that would be a small portion but not $200,000. I know that there are no new buses being purchased this year so that explains the big cut in transportation but if the price of fuel keeps going up that budget will have to be amended big time.

Mr. Barrett's assessment is inaccurate.
Item 72310-299 Fringe Benefits (retiree Health Insurance) is $168000 of the total under board of education and not under salaries as he would have you believe. And yes the 2.5% increase in salaries was not funded by the state and left for us to cover. ,

You have to be kidding?

Please come back to reality!

Such a move upon our County Government officials would require them to be willing to open themselves to public disclosure, scrutiny and possible comments or questions regarding their spending. Do you really believe that they are that willing to open themselves to the public?

Maybe if they applied a $9.30 fee to each vehicle license tag renewal they'd could raise some more operating money and throw in a copy of the county budget to boot?

I am sorry to argue with "The Truth" but the state did fund their portion of the 2.5% raise. The amount was included in the BEP. The county did have to cover their portion as always and the county had to cover the entire amount of the non-BEP funded positions.

So Ray is trying to be a champion for the county yet he takes our tax dollars from the government. At what point do you get to call someone a hypocrite?

I also don't know why it is so hard for him to answer the question. I don't take money from the government. See how easy that was? I agree with the person above. Some people give the answer without saying anything.

To "The truth who said "Mr. Barrett's assessment is inaccurate."
I appreciate your efforts to keep me straight but please try to keep your assessments attached to what I have done not what you think I did.
What I posted was one hundred percent accurate by the budget statement. I didn't even put the line item 72310-299 you speak of in the topic. I only posted the 72310 Board of Education overall line category.

At no time did I claim or imply that the fringe benefits of 72310-299 were salaries they were clearly posted within the 72310 Board of Education. So please show where I tried to make anyone believe anything about the $168,000.00.

If you want to get specific every item in the 72310 category was increased except life insurance, dues & memberships and travel, Audit Services remained the same.

ANYONE who may receive income from the government is not getting any kind of handout. Any payments made to recipients from the government is something we all work for and pay into through government deductions from our paychecks. When needed, it is an entitlement, a kind of insurance we have paid into. Sometimes wrongly called 'welfare'.

I appreciate y'all's support. So perhaps we can get past me, I'll answer the dumbass's question. I work part-time at Tn Valley Wholesalers, I do some plumbing and electrical work, I repair computers and I write freelance articles.

I also receive a small disability check due to an accident I had several years ago. I continued working after the accident -- because the last thing I wanted was to be dependant on the gov -- to the point that I damaged my body beyond repair. I work when I can, they're very cool at the Valley and let me do what I can. I would love to work full-time, but since I started paying taxes and social security at the age of 14, I feel I have paid my part into the system. If that doesn't satisfy the naysayers, y'all can just kiss my big white ass.

My thanks to the one's who understand, my above sentiment to the one's who don't. Now, can we get back to the topic, or do you want to know my shoe size as well. They're big, really big.

I don't know where there is a "number carried there." I know that there is an empty office, one employee has been changed to half time and another is to be laid off at the end of September. I said myself that I did not know why the increase in budget because of the decrease in people. I cannot explain that unless there are plans to bring more people in. If Jackson is going to do that he only has a few weeks left for that.

Don't be scared, 2 is as low as you can go. Of course, judging by your post, I'm pretty sure you would not even achieve that.

Oh wait, it wouldn't work even if you could muster the talent to coherently compose a sentence. You have to register with your real name. I believe that puts you out of the running right away.

1:35/4:12, say it to my face. Prove to the blog that you're not the coward everyone knows you to be. Come on by, I would love to scrape your face along the sidewalk. I would enjoy that very much. Besides, a 5 minute ass-whipping is not nearly as taxing as working a full-time job.

You know where to find me, 7:29, if you drink enough courage or your friend rags you to the point where you don't think clearly.
