Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. Attention! An Important New Change in Policy

Well folks, I listen...

And the people of this blog have spoken... both in public, and via private email. And it’s unanimous... My new policy of "censoring" the phrases "anal buffoon" and "garbage dump" is disliked by everyone who has commented on it. But, as I said.... I listen.

Therefore, I am quite proud to announce a NEW change in policy, to take effect immediately: (drum roll)

From now on, I will continue to "censor" the two phrases I find so offensive, but I won’t be a "dictator" about it. From now on, if one of your posts falls "victim" to my extremely light "censorship," you can APPEAL its deletion to my just created "Board of Blog Appeals." This seven member panel will have an absolute power to override my "censorship" decisions. All you have to do is convince four out of the seven that I am wrong, and your post will be restored, lickety-split! What could be more fair? Who could ask for anything more?

If this ain’t "free speech" my new policy has to be the next best thing to it. And, honestly people, do you really NEED to talk about "anal buffoons" and "garbage dumps?" There are literally hundreds of billions of two word phrases in the English language, and I’m simply asking that you stop using TWO of them. Is that so unreasonable? And now that the actual final decision will be made fairly and impartially by the new "Board of Blog Appeals," only a whiner would complain that their "free speech rights" were being violated.

So, that’s the way it stands now. Never let my commitment to freedom of speech be questioned ever again! Thank you for your time and attention....

To Mr. Mcpeters

If you do have glaucoma I sympathize with you but you knew you had this condition before you started the blog and if this blog has become a burden to you because of your condition then end it but please don't use your disability as an excuse to justify censorship of what does not appeal to you. You stated that this is a 'free speech' blog then so be it. You have had no problem with the many blogs that have accused others of horrible things such as liars, thieves, lesbians, bad parents etc. so it seems that your deletions only show your biased views. Also you use you glaucoma as an excuse for these 'new rules' because it wastes time away from what vision you have left, but from your many numberous writtings on this blog that hasn't seemed to phase you one bit so please don't use that as an excuse. If you truly believe and want this to be a 'free speech' site then let it, but don't sensor it according to 'your views' if you continue to do that then don't stand on your soap box and call it free speech and definatly don't stand behind your disability because that just offends everyone else with one. If you really want to do something and believe in it your disability shouldn't stop you. Agian I'm sorry you have glaucoma and again if running this site is taxing to you because of it then stop don't make excuses for biased censorship.

I personnaly think this blog system
should down altogether. It is just a place for people to trash other people. It was ridecolous the things that were put on here during
the election. People should not have a website like this to say abusive and ugly things about people regardless of what or how they got elective to any office.
They should not be allowed to reun people down at any time regardless of the situation. AND NAME CALLING AND ACCUSATIONS OR FOR THE BIRDS. SO FOR THAT REASON ALONE
I THINK THIS WEBSITE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.

Stopping the blog is not the answer, every once in the while a little nugget of wisdom can be found glinting in the muck. Although I agree the accusations during the election went on too long. If I saw the word "lie" in one more post I was going to go out and kick something.
Kendrick, can you do a post to find out what kind of NIMBY's (not in my back yard) we have?
People have been fighting rock quarries, pit bulls, mobile homes, nuclear power plants, adult establishments, beer stores, cell towers, the "D" and who knows what in their neighborhood for ages. Whether its money, morals, or health concerns everyone seems to be against something coming to their area. And if the offensive element is not placed -in your back yard- then where should it go?

Ms. Gordon, I agree with you 100 percent, it's not mr. mcpeters that is causing this blogg to be disliked by some people, it's the people that have no respect for others, or some that simply just want to argue about something, no matter what it is. I think the foul talk, and vulgar language should be censored. If people want to express themselves that way I think they have a problem themselves. Keep up the good work Mr. Mcpeters.

You bet Allen Barrett is! Who could be better? He's not only an ordained minister, but he's faced jail time in his pursuit of free speech. And for those impecable qualifications, I've named him to be chairman of the board. I'm sure he'll do a fine job keeping me in line, just like he would've done a fine job keeping the county's spendthrifts in line, had he been elected as commissioner.

Honestly, if you can't trust WAB to guarantee your freedom of speech on this blog, who could you trust????

While I have everyone mad at me, I might as well make one more change to tidy up the blog...

Ever since the beginning of this endeavor, I've been hearing all kinds of whining about the so-called dust problem caused by the new rock quarries. I have never denied that this is the case (for I have no direct information one way or another) but I have repeatedly asked, what about the old quarry by the airport? Does it fill the air with dust? And why are property values so high near the Rogers Group quarry?

Now, I'm not going to BAN the future discussion of "road dust" caused by the new quarries... BUT, anytime someone brings that subject up, without answering my oft repeated questions regarding the old quarry... I will edit their posting to reflect the fact that my questions have been ducked.

I'm sure this will not tread too heavily on anyone's freedom of speech, especially with my Board of Blog Appeals on the job to protect the lay reader from my dictatorial excesses.

They're all good God-fearing Americans who are dedicated to freedom of speech, naturally.

The "junior" members are: David Bailey, Bernard Burnett, Gayle Jones, Leonard Rogers, Gilmore Tarpley, and Fred Winkles. (Well, technically, these six are the ones I hope to get on board. I haven't gotten in touch with all of them just yet... but if any of them turn me down, I'll do all I can to replace them with people of equal calibre.)

In addition to quarry dust, how about cracked foundations of homes due to blasting, flying rocks, dump trucks speeding by your house, and on and on? But, darn, I forgot. That's the price of progress.
Censoring a free speech blog......seems a true irony...and a shame.

"Garbage dump" refers to a federal and state controlled garbage and refuse depository site that is within the city limits of Lewisburg and operates with the blessings of their zoning laws. It is offensive to the residents who have to put up with a horrible stench. They don't want anyone to pretend it doesn't exist. It is a classic lesson for those who think zoning laws will protect you. Matter of fact, it is a prime example of what you can expect in the city or in the country!.

Is there any way to have serious discourse on the matter of various offensive elements? Its not just about "D"s and quarries. I was once asked to sign a petition which requested a mobile home (modular)not be placed in the neighborhood. Something about devaluating property. I did not sign it. But several not-in-my-backyard individuals did. Its obvious everbody is a NIMBY about something. Like sewage treatment plants dumps are necessary and have to go somewhere. So where? We love cell phones, but you should watch the fights over cell towers. Surely an amicable compromise could be reached where neighbors of say a dump/quarry/tower received remuneration for their inconvience. Perhaps lower property taxes or an annual fee paid to nearby residents from the company managing the dump or quarry. Call it a Smelly-Fee or a Dusty-Tax or something. Give every household with 2 miles a three year old car, every 3 years. I don't know, negotiate something.
I'm not for higher business taxes, but it might ease the inconvenience of living near the facilities. And while this may not be the answer, at least its a start to serious dialogue or the beginning of all sides working to some type of compromise.

Zoning is a transfer of property rights from the landowner, to the County Commissioners. You, the landowner, get to keep paying taxes on the land, but the Commissioners now get to make all of the important decisons on how you get to USE "your" land. Many people object to this blatant loss of freedom, and feel that their life is diminished by their reduction in status to rightless "serfs" ruled over by the almighty Commission.

Now, as to the "LUMP," it has never had any such impact, because it is not, and never has been, legally enforced. Just ask the County Attorney, if you don't believe this to be the case.

Never got an answer to that question.

I've answered this question, on this blog, and on the original blog, at least a half dozen times. What part of "the LUMP is not being enforced, and therefore cannot hurt anyone" do you not understand???

It is possible, however, that the LUMP may finally be put into effect. The attempt to lease the output of the Campbellsville spring to a Canadian company is going to require that the LUMP's map be amended to change that property from FAR to "Light Industrial." And that means that the Planning Commission has to have a meeting, vote to rezone the lot, then put an ad in the paper that describes the rezoning, and announces (15 days ahead of time) a meeting of the COUNTY COMMISSION, where the public is invited to attend, and then of course the Commission will have to have a second special meeting to actually vote on the zoning map change. I don't know about you, but that sounds like an awful lot of work to get done before the new commissioners are sworn in-- which seems to be the intent.

If, on the other hand, Speer and Vanzant and Company simply skip all this rezoning jazz, then that should prove, once and for all that the LUMP was passed for PR reasons only, and never was intended to be enforced. We shall soon see!

How simplistic and asinine can you be? Nobody gives a hoot what the farmer and homeowner does on his own land as long as his actions do his neighbor no harm. You would have to get help to misunderstand that. The zoning plan you refer to is aimed at commercial ventures. Please get over the cry baby whining.

Let's see - everything is zoned except the countryside. You know that, yet continue to deceive, whine, bang you head on a rock, and try to convince the 80% majority to follow you like lemmings to a sea of bureaucracy.

Chances are you see a financial opportunity for yourself - your fingers are twitching - & you'll just happen to fall into a good deal. Seems like we've had more than our fair share of well placed political figures caught in the money trap. It isn't hard to find facts.

This is not the place to put this but since your reading before you print now could you consider doing a challenge to your readers.

Challenge all of them to go back in local, Middle Tennessee and other state newspapers to see how many times since Jackson has been director that he has run an ad for teachers and then check Alabama papers and see how many ads they can find their. I think it would be very interesting.

Alabama has different ads for Giles positions and the Alabama teachers that come with 25 years of experience and retires from Ala. will start out at 36,000+ and a new teacher from TN will start a 28,000+. Alot of back scratching. Amd so dishonest, but hey doesn't that sound like the old school board?
