Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. Parking Problem on the Square is Solved???

According to the County Executive and a few County Commissioners there is nothing that can be done about people parking on the courthouse lawn or sidewalks! The issue of parking motorcycles on the sidewalk next to the Courthouse was raised at the Property Committee Meeting on March 12, 2007, it was met with smiles and exasperated expressions of frustration summed up by the County Executive’s statement, “there’s nothing we can do about it”.

The question comes to mind, if the County Executive and the County Commission have no power to create and enforce laws, rules and regulations, what exactly are they there for? Are we now to believe that the sheriff can only “suggest” people not smoke in the courthouse, carry weapons inside or behave in an orderly manner?

Will the average citizen be allowed to park on the Courthouse lawn like Courthouse officials and their staff or will this be another example of citizens separated from benefits and privileges enjoyed by their employees? Is this just another example of the divide that exists between “them that got and them that don’t got?” Allen Barrett
