Giles Free Speech Zone

The purpose of the "Giles Free Speech Zone" is to identify problems of concern to the people of Giles County, to discuss them in a gentlemanly and civil manner, while referring to the facts and giving evidence to back up whatever claims are made, making logical arguments that avoid any use of fallacy, and, hopefully, to come together in agreement, and find a positive solution to the problem at hand. Explanation For Missing McGill DUI

Scott Stewart editor of the Pulaski Citizen has given a very reasoned and acceptable explanation for his paper having missed reporting on the DUI arrest of Tax Assessor Steve McGill.
Basically the problem seems to have stemmed from a combination of complacency, lack of staff and resources for which Mr. Stewart has apologized and committed to do better.
In past dealings with Mr. Stewart I have found him to be an honest, upfront man who has tried very hard to be open and fair in his operation of the newspaper. I find no reason to question his explanation or integrity as his explanation is very plausible and his integrity has been proven many times over.

Commissioner Decides Not To Seek Re-Election?

The word is out that Commissioner Alan Faulkner from the 7th District is on of the first current Commissioners who has decided not to seek re-election. I have not been able to confirm this with Commissioner Faulkner but the sources are extremely reliable.
Will there be more who decide to retire? Allen Barrett

Cost To Fight Against Financial Management

Finally after all this time and a threat to file an Ethics Violation with the State, the required financial statement showing how much money was spent by Commissioner Lovell to fight against the adoption of the Financial Management Act has been filed. I say how much money Commissioner Lovell spent because according to the statement there were no contributions from any one else, no loans made by anyone and no obligations for any expense.
So with no signatures on any page and every available block filled in with N/A it seems a very passive aggressive person complied in part by stating that he spent $2,295.00 on ads in the Free Press and $1,212.00 for ads on WKSR. Allen Barrett

Is The County Finished With The Hunter Smith Building?

During the Commission Meeting today the question was asked by Commissioner Jackson if the County was finished with the Hunter Smith Building, If everything had been gotten out that was coming out and how much did the county make off the sale of materials that had been stored in the building.
The County Executive declared that the building was completely empty and had been turned over to the buyer. Approximately $1700.00 had been realized for the sale of excess material in the building.
The question is did the County Executive speak without knowledge of the facts, or simply state something she knew wasn't true? The fact is the Hunter Smith Building still has all sorts of election office material stored there including the voting machines which are required to be kept secured. Is this just another matter of one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing? Allen Barrett
